New Gearbox... Different Ratios??

  1. #1
Had my VTS gearbox changed today as it was beginning to whine. Had a brand new (reconditioned) 106 GTi box put in. Now I was led to believe that VTS/GTi boxes were the same but already I have noticed a clear difference in the ratio's compared to the box that was removed. For example. My old box, in 5th gear at 40mph, revs would sit bang on 2,000RPM. With this new box they are at around 1,500RPM...

Why is this? Is it because it's been reconned and needs to "break in" or some other factors?

    Cheers.

If its lower RPM at the same speed then this would mean a lower FD. So maybe its a VTR box?

Thats what I suspect. Did you check the box code before fitting?

^^^ spot on, I'd say a vtr box

As above, VTR box or check the code on the box.

Didn't check the code before fitment, I should have done! Is there anyway that I can check it now?

I can't believe that it would be a vtr box, the guy seemed really genuine and said that it was for his 106 GTi. Here's the link to the auction:

Lower FD means slower acceleration and more top end speed right? Last thing I wanted as I rarely go above 70!

    Thanks.

Must say it looks mint man.

Any box you buy you should really check the box code. Im not 100% sure if you can see it while on the car (not sure what direction the code would be facing).

You could message him, but its your word against his.

Also it looked (same size) etc identical to the old box that was removed as we put them up next to each other when the old one was out. Not sure if that helps?

even if the box has the right code on it the guy who reconditionned it may have put a different final drive in you never know

If the box has been apart (I would have thought so as it's recon'd) then would have a vtr diff/pinion shaft fitted - in that case the code on the box wouldn't matter.

I've got a spare vts diff/pinion shaft if you want to replace your vtr ones?

Also, always be cautious if the seller says he's bought it but not fitted it - could hint at a problem or just be the honest truth, that's the chance you take.

All the boxes look the same dude.

You could easily try fighting your corner. But it may be realy long winded and hassle.

At least you can enjoy better MPG!

Ok mate. Cheers for the help. Yeah it is mint. He seemed really genuine so I can't believe that he would be selling a different box to what he stated. Just find it weird how the revs are a fair bit lower at the same speed

I'm no mechanic so i'm not sure what bits he replaced but the guy that fitted it for me took I would say 3-4 things off the old box and put them on this one. I can't remember what they were now?!

The bits that affect the revs of the box are inside, so they could have been replaced with vtr ones when the box was reconditioned (if the code says its a vts box)

I just mean that the code isn't the be all and end all as to whats inside the gearbox if it's been apart

Ah right. So if it's a vts/gti box and the bits inside were replaced with vtr parts then technically it will be working the same as a vtr box? That's probs whats happened then...

So annoying. Wish I had just saved up for a Rallye box now.
