Complicated 16v conversion

  1. #1
I have asked this before so please bare with me, i have the 8v, mk2 vtr, W reg, single plug ecu, silver top engine and want to upgrade to a 16v. I know there are problems with ecu and wiring looms so i was hoping that someone could point me towards the right year/type of engine to get,

    This is my Loom plug:

Any help would be appreciated and i can upload more pics if needed, cheers.

Cheers, i'll head to the scrappy next week to see what i can find.

youll need a single plug on the ecu, and a single big plug on the wing!

Youll be able to see the difference if you compare them.

Cheers olly, also, if there is any chance of me seeing a engine running before removing it from the donor car, where is the immobiliser plug i have to pull to unlock the ecu??

Could someone please upload a pic of the smaller Loom Plug?

I had the same problem mate, mine was a W reg silvertop VTR, i brought a VTS loom and a 106 loom that was with the GTI engine, i found it hard to find a W reg VTS loom as my VTR had the single plug ecu (mk1) and mk2 plug behind the headlight.
I took it to the local garage that deal with modifying and they adapted me VTR loom to work, i got alot of wires down there, and yes its running 8 valve management but it all works just fine, lol.

Nothings ever simple is it lol. Do you know where i could aquire a loom to fit? would a W reg gti engine loom fit the same as a W reg vts one? sorry for the questions but if i could get the right loom and single plug ECU could i drop in any single plug ECU'd vts/gti engine??

Okay, just been reading the conversion guides on the sticky threads. What type of ball joint splitter would i need? Also, im planning on giving the 16v lump some tlc before it goes in, so what would people reccomend? Thinking along the lines of head skimming, new piston rings, cambelt change, port polishing and valve polishing, would this be worth it? Cheers for your support.

what about doing clucth whilst its out?
  12. #12
Yeah, was just reading about that, would definatly be done, as the engine i have at the moment has only dont 60k and is cammed im not in any hurry to change so have the time to get everything just as i want it. Was thinking about gearbox change but im not as confident about that as i am the engine change.
  13. #13
gearbox easier than engine change lol, what you going to do with the vtr engine? how many miles it done etc..interested with the cams hha
  14. #14
Well as it stands its a silvertop 90 bhp single plug ecu vtr engine, done 60k, kent pt40 cams, 4-2-1 mani, k&n induction, Iridium plugs runs quite well, but not being mapped i dont know if i am getting its full potential, will proberly go on sale once the 16v lump is fitted.

    ok dude, let me know!

whilst the engine is out, rebuild or replace everything you can. Your best bet for a loom is on here.
  17. #17
Yeah, i would try to get one from here, but not sure if i got any single plug ecu 16v engine does that meen i could just buy a single plug ecu loom and make sure that it had the right size loom plug?
  18. #18
you would need any single plug 16v ecu and the correct loom
