Vts brakes!!!

  1. #1
right people, im doing an engine conversion in the future for my 1.1 saxo and im just getting the brakes for it at the moment, im just woundering if the old hubs on the front of my 1.1 saxo will be ok with the vts calipers and discs?

also the back brakes i will need 2 change it from drums to hubs, is this easy to do?

    cheers

search button is your friend mate as this is discussed daily

Personly id stick with the drums on the back.
Most of the time you will fine they are more efficent, though dont look as nice

and why would you say that?
Drum brake handbrake is far superior to any disk handbrake in the citroen/peugeot range

Im sure the last thing on his mind is how well he can do handbrake turns tbh. Although I would agree that they would be fine for everyday driving.

handbrake turns arnt the only time you need a good handbrake
passing an mot and parking on hills are others.
They are far less prone due to the design of allowing roll back when they cool down that you get with disks

Yeah but how often do you hear of handbrakes failing? Most semi decent cars come with all round disks nowadays and I've never seen one randomly start rolling down a hill.

Happens more than you would imgane.
Alot of companies use a drum with in a disk, drum for handbrake and disk for everyday brakeing.

    Swampy you're a beautiful man.

Firstly for making a good point, and secondly because you reminded me I need to talk to you. PM sent

ok so if i stick with my drum brakes, do you lot think i should up grade the drum and shoes?
    cheers
  12. #12
'Performance Drum Brakes' is an oxymoron.

If the standard ones are in good nick I wouldn't bother. Fitting new drums = fitting new bearings aswell, unless you're mega pikey and use the old ones.

tbh mate go for some 266mm brakes if they fit the hub, would need to ask as i'am unsure

standard 247mm vts brakes are totally shit

    with the wrong pads in

lee has 247s on his rallye and tbh they are massively improved just with mintex 1144s and some decent discs

in standard form yes there shite (i have 11 quid pads for Q&H in mine and there shocking)

    but lees are very good
plus less weight on the hub ect

i love my 283mm 4 pots but tbh now with how light my car is im going to start locking up ect all the time (no abs on a vtr) where as the 247s you can be a lot more agressive with your foot and not have to worry
at first with mine i would forget and ive had a few moments simply from braking hard at 60 mph ive since had to learn how to use my brakes rather than just foot in like

id look at 247 or 266 (as they will fit on all 4 stud saxos) with like 1144s or ds2500 pads and good quality discs and youll be happy
get a 21mm m/c on there too as the 1.1 runs a 18mm iirc so the bigger will make a nice difference
  15. #15
calipers will bolt straight on along with the discs. id leave the drums as they are, not worth the hassle of changing
  16. #16
i just so happen to have a full vtr setup in the garage which is the same as the vts, but if youre upgrading id highly recommend going with a 266 or 284mm kit

    This man is absolutely right.

tbh the vts brakes at pretty shocking anyway, this goives you a reason to go for 306 gti6 set up

dont worry mate i'm here to sort of agree,

you right 247mm would be good if you get good pads but the majority would go "wow!! green pads look ace" then they will crash.

would go for 266mm with decent pads myself as you can run save money by not having to get 15", plus tyres are alot cheaper for 14"

yea but green pads are the worst invention since the wire wool toothbrush tbh

can run 14s (or even 13s) over 247 save the cash buying 266 get good pads and have less hub weight effecting the handeling lol
  23. #23
VTS brakes are still a good upgrade over standard 1.1 tat.

If you're still not happy then grab some 266's.

Considering you can pick up an entire VTS setup for ~£50 you may aswell see if they'll be good enough for your driving style before spending more than double that on a 266mm setup.

For regular trackdays or fast road 266mm would be ideal but in a 1.1 for normal/mild fast road a VTS setup would do you fine. The 1.1 block is lighter than a VTS anyways so you need less stopping force to begin with.

    Done.
  24. #24
least someone gets where im coming from lol!
i run the 247s on my 205 1400 xs and thats about as quick as a vts from the cars ive played with but due to less weight it stops reasonably and thats with pads that cost me 12 quid from Q&H lol
with 1144s ect itll be decent enough for me
  25. #25
ive heard these 266mm are on citroen berlingos? is this right... if so i think i might go for these....
  26. #26
    Yes.

Youll find both types of 266 on them.
