Prices for rebuilding a gearbox, what have you paid?

  1. #1
Just phoned a few places today to get prices for rebuilding my box. I know it will vary due to what needs replacing but just want to see if my quotes are in the right ball park.

If you could post what you had done and what it cost that would be great. Also if that included getting it fitted and removed from the car?

    Thanks Gavin

I'd think about buying a rallye box if i was in your position, seen them on here for £160 ish i think.

looking for someone who can have the car as a whole and do it. As I dont have the time to take a box out and send it to them.

Dont want another box as mines got a quaife etc in

For a start what's wrong with the gearbox?

1st/2nd syncro is a good £140 with 3rd/4th knocking on the door of £170.

So it could be anything from £150-£500+ really. If you explain why you want it rebuilt we can give you a better clue.

Well whining could be clutch release bearing? OR could simply be the quaife diff, maybe just the way it is?

IF not then this is what I'd expect cost wise:

Maybe new 3rd/4th syncro (£170) or syncro rebuilt with new 3rd ring (maybe anything upto £50)

Whilst its apart I'd put an uprated input shaft bearing in, so £15.

Then around £40 in disposable parts you'd replace when you've disturbed them pulling the box apart.

So maybe budget between £100-£200 in parts, then just labour ontop ?

thats if you buy a complete synco, most of the time its just the syncro rings are there under £80 for a full set.

i charge 3 hours to strip and rebuild the box plus parts (labour is £35 but discounted to £30 for SAX-P members)

its normally £150 to remove and refit the box but this drops to £100 if i rebuild the box

Hmm doesnt seem too bad, ive budgeted more just incase there is more that needs doing whilst its out.

Just a shame your quite far from me, I think you built this box the first time round for the old owner anyway haha

I had bearings, seals and syncros plus an internal swap for £180.

I bought a fully refurbished box, new bearings and seals, new synchros etc etc came with a 30000 mile warranty and the casing was powder coated so looks really tidy. Cost £280.

who did you buy the box from ??? is it painted

its always best to budget for a clutch at the same time as having the box out

Think his forum name was rallye rich

    has a blue s2 rallye

Got a brand new valeo clutch kit fitted the other month when I put the box in so clutch is 100% fine. Just a shame I fitted the box before I found out it was dud

what makes you say the box is dud
richs box had both complete syncro units, all new bearings and an xsi FD fitted with the ATB

it was done a few years ago but i know it hasnt done that many miles

Are you running the correct oil?

Its just not as smooth as my old box and doesnt like 3rd gear. Ie quick changes on track and if you downshift to 3rd at 50/60ish is crunches. Plus its really whiney in all gears, can here it coming a mile away lol
Plan to get the FD swapped over too as I find it a bit short for me.

thats a really reasonable deal to be honest mate,
    where was that from?
  20. #20
Yer that sounds like a really good deal especially with warrenty

Tempted buy that and putting my quaife in but then id be ruining the warrenty
  21. #21
if you dont like the xsi box, id personally sell that box and get another rebuilt with another diff.

The cost of stripping it down, removing the diff and making the crown wheel scrap effectively, then paying to get another crown wheel machined etc...
  22. #22
its a S2 rallye box, only thing XSi is the final drive
  23. #23
the only thing that differs in an xsi and an s2 rallye box is the FD
the gears are the same its just the pinion shaft and crown wheel that were changed so its now an xsi box
