Strange whining/squeaking noise

  1. #1
    Hi all,

Ive got a 53 VTR with 48k on the clock, had it 6 month now. When i first got the car i got both the front driveshafts changed under warranty and began to notice a strange squeak/whine almost like a fan belt beginning to slip and it mainly comes when Im slowing down, IE the car in not under load. Anyways its become a almost constant thing now and its really annoying me !! I was worried that it might be the timing belt so i got that changed along with the tensioner and water pump, i was planning on it anyways as it hadn't been done according to the service book.
I've had a scout about on here and am beginning to suspect the altenator belt ? Does this ring true to any of you ? Either that or maybe a dry joint ? I've checked and the boots are still in place.
Any help will be great thanks.

Also i recently had a slight oil leak from the pressure valve, oil was dripping on to the lambada and burning off with the heat. I've changed the pressure valve and it cured it for a while but I've noticed its back agin, is there some kind of seal that goes with it ?

If driveshafts are already changed then it's probably wheel bearings, Had it myself, wheel bearings fixed it for a bit, then it came back worse and it was the drive shafts

I think i have the same.

Does it only happen mainly when de-accelerating and does it like change pitch?

    No idea what it is

It's the intermediate bearing... trust me. I had exactly the same problem, changed both driveshafts - nothing, changed intermediate bearing... fixed! i had a video of the noise somewhere, i'll try and upload it again and post a link.

Heres a link to a video of the noise, it's pretty quiet but you can hear it: HERE

Should be able to do it yourself with basic tools and a little help from the how-to section. I've said it before and i'll say it again... the £15 for a premium membership on here is WELL worth it. The info in the premium member help section has saved me a fortune!

Has anyone ever had their altenator belt slipping ?, my mate said it sounded like a fan belt slipping so wondered if it could be that.
  27. #27
Well had the car in the garage today, wheel bearings are fine, suspension is fine, brakes are fine, everything is fine as they say......gets in the car drives off and out comes the squeek LOL

If it's fan belt, will be a high pitched loud squeal lights will dim (if they're on) on and quite often you will feel as though you've lost some power.

The squeal in the video above is the alternator belt.

Im getting my gearbox oil topped up etc on sat so will let ya know how that goes

Id say its the intermidiate bearing tbh, had it happen on a 205 before, best way to check is give it a good coating of spray grease and drive ur car it should go then only 4 couple of miles then the sound will re appear.
Reson its noisy now is cus roadsalt over winter gets into the bearing and drys it out
