lagging power?

  1. #1
Hmmm im not sure if thats the right way to describe or not really....... Sorry if something like this has been posted before!

When i got my vts, the guy said that it was tuned up a bit (not sure how true) but the revs wud jump up and down when idling? Anyway couple of days ago whilst driving obviously it just seemed to lag power for like 10secs then jerk back up again like normal? It only seems to do this in 2nd or 4th aswell? Its not a consistent thing tho its very random when it does it, i'm a little car savvy, i was thinking maybe its the start of the head going?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Not normal.

Sounds like HT leads/coilpack needs replacing, basically causing a missfire.

Other issues could also be a faulty lamdba sensor, check wiring for this also as mine had come a part.

Less likely issues could be coolant or air temp sensor, also if you think the problem is located to what gear you are in then this could be the crank sensor.

Best be is to get it run on a diagnostics which brings up all the faults and gives you the exact problem, this is usually £20 at most garages.

This could also be the map sensor or idle control valve/stepper motor.

thanks! i'll run it the garage and get them to have a quick look just hoping its nothing to bad or exspensive!

might be worth getting a diagnostic scan too mate, can make life easier diagnosing faults. does sound like a misfire as said above though

I have had it quite a few times, more so when i have more people in the car. Never been able to suss the problem out though, as having cams means idle isn't 100% stable anyway. One thing i did notice is that when we had bad wet weather, my car did it a lot more, and even triggered EML which put car in Limp mode. Had the car diagnosed and nothing big came up, removed coil pack and plugs and left them overnight. Refitted coil pack, changed plugs and used ignition sealant on coil pack/plugs and now very rarely have this problem.

the garage i use tends to just assume what it is :-\ specially with my old car (classic mini) changed all sorts of things before he actually got to the problem! i dont even think he has a diognostic scan thingy

I would try a different garage,

    **bump**

So took it to the garage i was right no diagnostic scan thing.......

Explained as best as i could what it was doing etc etc..... He said that the plugs were loose and needed cleaning and the coil was loose and the rocker cover head gasket needed somthing...... tightened it all up bobs ya uncle fannies ya aunt for 2 days......

Now im back to square one only this time it does it more often and the idle is horrendus to the point it nearly cuts out :-\ gets hot pretty quick aswell so im obviously not driving it til its fixed incase i do more damage then good!

I need it fixed before i go to USC!! im not missing it lol

Any clues would be good as im now getting stressed!!

    Hi Sarah,

Baker556 has some good suggestions. Here is a guide on cleaning the ICV http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=174710 as this often is a cause. There are other things suggested in the guide if cleaning the icv doesn't work, but the list is pretty much as Baker556 lists.

    thanks for the link!

I had the coil pack changed and its still doing it..... theres no ht leads, it seems to hesitate when i slow down and accelerate, judders bad then back to normal? Not sure if the plugs are the right ones.... there fr7dc + bosch?

Its still idling irractically worse when warm, but its getting warm pretty quick? its not losing water or oil.

Its going back to the garage tomorrow, would like to give him a few things to check, again any help is much appreciated!

Bleed the system properly and make sure their are is no air locks in the system.

Check lambda sensor it may need cleaning or replacing.

    ICV may need cleaning.

Induction kit? make sure it sealed properly on vacum pipes.

If it has small hoses coming from the inlet check their all connected properly one disconnected will cause iratic idle.

    Is your throttle cable sticky?

Spark plugs check the gap clean them.

Could even be down to injectors

Take the battery terminals off over night to let the car reset.
