power steering

    Basically my car hadn't been ussed in about 6 months as ive been at uni managed to fix everything that was wrong with her, went to drive it today power steering was really heavy so popped the bonnet gave the pump a tap with the hammer then made a whining noise that stopped and power steering was sorted. Will it be alright as it hadnt been started in a while or is the pump on its way out?
    Cheers

    Hi,

    Inside are 4 carbon brushes that wear away, the carbon dust builds up and a tap with a hammer usually clears the dirt from the commutator allowing the brushes to make contact. Should be ok for a while but the brushes are wearing.

    What's causing mine to make a horrible noise, although it works fine?

    @thenice,

    One end of the motor has a bearing and the other a bush and my guess is that one or both are worn. I doubt that you could replace these DIY as the parts are not readily available.

    @Matt1,

    If the PAS, heater blower and rear window demister are not working then you could try to by-pass the ignition switch: http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27609
