PAS, heater fan , rear demister Repair.

Ok if all three of the above have stopped working this is what you do.

Remove the steering column cover (held on by 2 torx) and under the steering column is a light brown plastic connector with 2 red wires going in the right side and 2 brown wires coming out the left side.

Cut the 2 brown wires and join them together. Make sure you solder the wires or use a proper crimp connector and make sure u use insulation tape to cover it. and tape up the 2 lose ends of the brown wires.

its by passing a switch in the ignition its a common falt on the saxo even citroen do this mod (so ive been told) its this or pay for a new ignition.

Steveosaxo- it could just be the fan switch its self get a new 1 from the scrappys id try that b4 any thing else. cos its only working on 1 setting id say it was the fan switch

i had this problem mate and didnt bother fannying about with the wires. i got a new ignition barrel fitted, the contacts went in the old one, its a common fault on saxos, i needed to buy a whole new lock kit from shitreon.

I sort of had this problem a few days ago & it happens every other day.

But when i rev the car upto about 2k revs the relay or something clicks & all 3 things work again.

Could my car be getting this problem?

i have removed the trim and can only find 1 brown connector block but only has two thick red wires coming from the right side the other side is not connected to nothing

right i have this problem , i just want to know if its a good idea doing it this way , yes for some it has worked and others it hasnt , ime just interested wheather or not this is a good thing to do on a long term basis, is it 100% safe etc , and will it last....

i wasnt sure if it was safe?

i went to shitreon, got a new lock key and had the ignition lock coded and new barrel fitted. this wasnt cheap. i fitted the rest of the locks myself. lol

worked a treat and no probs since

i have to say bud i was shitting it , but all good (touched wood) for now , will be interested to see what its like on a long term basis , i found shitreon to cancel my car going in and explained to them what i had done , they said its what they would have tried first , if that didnt work then they would of had to replace all the locks etc , to do the wireing alone they wanted 50quid my machanic done if for me for a tenner so i was quite releaved to say the least

Bought a 99 Westcoast VTR about 3-4 months ago. Everything was fine until a few days ago, i got in my car for work and found i had no PAS and blowers. Checked this forum for any other experiences, found this great page and found a solution. Went out side to look this thing over, to find mine had already been done before now....

But... this is wot i did find......someone had put in a in-line fuse between the connection of the 2 brown wires and it melt the fuse and it's holder, causing it to fall apart ( losing my PAS and blowers). It appear it was a 30amp fuse and was too strong to break the circuit.... Was thinking of installing a new in-line fuse holder and trying a smaller fuse like a 20a or 25a. So at least it wont overheat and cause melting.

Does anyone else support the idea to put an in-line fuse between the connection of the brown wires?? I find this a more safe and efficent way of making this 'By Pass' work.

Got a pic of damage caused, not sure how to upload it. Can anyone Help

Mate you do not need an inline fuse. I had this problem and fixed it. By joining a bit of wire, all you are doing is missing out the ignition barrel and completing the circuit. Loose the fuse buddy and you just need a bit of wire. If it melted a 30amp fuse, what will it do to a lower one then????? Exactly the same most probably but quicker.

I've just finished carrying out the above mod which has successfully caused everything to work as advertised, so owe you much thanks - pending any future flat batts or molten ignition barrels!

A couple of details that might help others:

The cover requires a T15 torx bit.

The light brown plastic connector comes away from the column by sliding to the right.

ive lost my blowers and pas.. found out if i used a a fuse instead of a a it would work for a bit then blow.. seems to work when i put a new fuse in until i hit a bump in the road then it blows the fuse.. might try this mod with a new fuse and see

I just had this problem, but just connected the wires and it worked straight away, not sure if it will damage the wiring loom or not as the battery is constantly sending powering through the wires. whats the longest someone has had this method left for without problems? I am worried about it catching fire.

It should be long term mate. It just by-passes the ignition switch, i believe that a lot of people have actually done this.

I had this problem, tried the mod and it didn't work (prob my fault somehow). I took out my barrel and tested the wires, the two that trigger the PAS, Heating and HRW was dodgy but all i needed to do was shove the wires back into the body and it worked fine, no need for this mod and definately no need to fork out god knows how much for a new ignition / lock set!

This thread is a beast though!

I have just got this problem to night on the way home, I am 100% sure it is the ignition barrel as it felt very sticky when starting.

On the pic on what to do its says the cut the brown wire but on the picture nothing has been cut, the two clips have been dis-connected and a green wire as been stuck in the light brown contector?

Some one help or an I thinking about it too much and confusing myself?

i tried wiring a dvd headunit into my car lastnite ended up loosin it n throwin it in the back of my car cum to start it and i had no battery light no indicators n my powered steering and heaters only works afta the cars been running for a minute or 2 could this rectify my problems?

hi mate i had the same problem yesterday, i checked the fuses in the dash and one of them had blown, a 10 amp on the bottom row i think, so i replaced it and it works fine now

lol.. and itsa been like that since my key got stuck in the barrle and i had to have a good fight geting it out i disconected the battery for about 2 mins then reconected it went to full lock both sides and played about with the key then it came out. and since then the fans have not worked or the rear demister

take the trim around your steering column off and push the six wires into the barrel properly, sounds like you have mucked it up when removing your key, sometimes you can get it to work again by moving the key around whilst the engines running. i had this problem and tested the wires to find which ones worked the PAS e.t.c and shoved them in, bin fine for months!

Alright, so my rear demister, and heater blower haven't worked since I bought the car.
And the other day I knocked the keys whilst they were in the ignition and the car was running, and the heater blower came on. Trying this again a few times to see if it always happened or was just a fluke, proved that it always happened.
So this inspired me to have a look at how to fix it.
I did so and ended up joining the two brown wires under the steering wheel.
Now my demister works, but my heater blower does not.
All fuses seem fine.
Any suggestions?

iv got all three problems aswel as the damn thing cuts out wen stopping and dipping the clutch, sorted the pas out but no luck with the blowers.
Tried the mod from here today and sadley it didnt work for mine......... gutted :-(

Yeah, unclip the big brown block to the wires are seperated.

Leave the two red ones on their own, then join the two brown either by cutting the block off and joining them that way or the way thats in the first post:

Bought a Saxo for the Mrs earlier this year and had to take it back to the garage from whence it came as the heater blower was not working, then it would and then it gave up the ghost.They sorted the problem out and its worked fine up until last weekend. My son knackered the steering lock up and got the key jammed in it. Got the car home stripped down the steering lock, got the key out and got everything working again ( I thought) . Mrs goes out in car and complains that heater isnt working

So following everyones advise I removed the wire block and did the conversion and Nothing ,Fookall , denada. Its nearly driving me to sodding

.Oh and the rear window heater isnt working either. Ive checked the fuses under the dash as well. Anyone any further suggestions besides a gallon of petrol and a match

Alternators working fine, checked and double checked it. I spent £5 at the local scrappers and got a new 2nd hand steering lock assembly. got the original one out and swapped the lock assembly over to the newish one , fitted it and everything is now working (fingers crossed) I have noticed one thing tho, the heater blower will only work if the engine is running,

Does everyone else`s do the same ????????? If not ive got a newneque car, mind you its used by a weird female

yeah the blowers dont work on all saxos unless the engines running , it was one of the first things i noticed wen i bought the car, never known any other car like that.....who knows how the french think when building cars

Hi i have no heaters or rear screen heater but have PAS, but all fuses are ok, anyone know how to get full dash out?? so i can check wires not unless anyone has a better idea that works?? lol gettin really cold at night when have to have windows down for rear screen to de-fog =\

Probably your heater blower motor has gone fella. I had the same problem with my '51 vtr, replaced motor and now all fine.

That'd mean flat battery and stuff?

Pretty ideal mod, but surely there needs a fuse or something to stop things blowing?

kinda had a go at this earlier but didnt fancy cuttin the wires so just thought id try puttin a screw in between the two terminals for the brown wires, tried to start the car and it wudnt, just cliked so i connected the brown n red wires bak together and it started, i then disconnected them while the car was started and put the screw in and the heaters n rear window demister worked but the when the car was turned off wudnt start agen?
is this because the screw isnt a good by-pass? im scared that if i cut the wires n solder them together then the car wont start lol
any ideas would be great??!! cheers

i cut the wires and scotch locked them together and it worked,i also tried your method but with speaker wire and it was the same as yours,car wouldnt start unless it was either clicked together or scotch locked

hello i have done alot of looking around for the problem i have and i dnt tend to find what im looking for .. the problem is my heaters dnt work and when i turn them on the power steering goes rock hard the rear demister light is on also with heaters off and i turn off the rear demister i get the same problem does any 1 have any ideas i give up looking now

hi i finally managed to fix the problem i followed the advise with the 2 brown cable conecting to the red under the steering collumn . it worked a treat

I had the same problem, No Power Steering, No Heater, No demister, and the battery warning light was on. I was going to attempt the suggested shorting of the wires, but then I applied some logic. This morning was very cold and frosty, ice on the windscreen, and i think this may have caused the problem. I switched on the heater and demister to melt the ice, I think that this causes the battery to put extra demand on the alternator, and in such case, the diodes in the alternator are made to convert high amount of ac to dc, as the battery need more power. The doide is prone to weakness under these condition and can be damaged. So it dawned on me that the Power Steerng is supplied by a high current pump, but only when the alternator is functioning, probably also the heating as well. So I got a voltmeter off a friend, revved up the engine and found that no change to the battery voltage, so i convinced myself that the alternator is the problem. I got a second hand one coming tommorow from 247 carspares on line, cost 20 quid. I have only had my current alternator (brand new) for only 3 months, so I reckon the demand in cold weather has caused the diode to damage.
Guys, maybe you should not do things like i did, and gradually let the car heat up a bit before switching everything on. Hope I have helped.

Bought a saxo the other day then realised had this problem. It's a 1.1i desire 3dr dunno if thats got power steering or not. Tried the fix and nothing so hooked the connections back up. So my problem is no PAS, but I dunno if my models got that. Blowers not working atall and rear window de-mister. Also my battery light stays on, im quite a noob with cars but would you say alternator?

i have read through the whole thread and still dont understand what you are doing with the two brown wires. the pic shows the red wires and the brown wires joined by a block, i tried your mod of putting a wire from one to the other and it didnt work as mentioned before. but where is the power coming from to put power down the brown ones? if what you are saying is to bypass the ignition where does the power come from. why would there be power coming back up the brown wire?

Just join the 2 brown wires together, the red wires stay disconnected. This just basically bypasses the switch in the ignition.

this keeps happening to me and i keep buying the wire that goes in the back of the barrel because it seizes up then i cant get the key out i have to bump start the car but obveously i dont have pas r/heat window or blower, WHY does this keep seizing up as i cant be assed changing the wireing every month!

If you can't get enough help through nine pages better go to Citroen dealer lol

For all three of those issues;
check fuses,
alternator belt,
battery connections,
relays,

Try bridging it, you will not need to if you sort out the main problem.

hi guys i made up a lead but obviously not well enough it started to smoke after a few weeks, and i used quite a big lead with crimps on the ends, can i just cut the leads and solder them together or any other ideas? or can someone make me a cable that will be ok, cos i dont want a fire..

Hay i know that some vehicles have a resistor under the bonnet some where strapped to the bodywork that controlls the speed of the fan. setting three works because this is a straight through connection(full speed) try source this out and replace it if not might be your switch also common problem. Hope this helps.

ahhh haaaaa my car works super now but after driving it for a few days with the steering like something out of the middle ages it feels so good now.thank god for power steering..
oh yeah and just to answer some peoples questions about is this safe and so on.yes it is a main citroen dealer told me they often do it as a cheaper method to save the cost of replacing the ignition switch etc as it is very costly not for them but for us.it is just your choice if you want this method done and it all depends on if the garage tell you about this method if you do not already kno.i wonder how many other cheaper fixes there are for repairing our cars and how much they are ripping us off.

I am going to opt for this method but first, can i simply cut those wires or do i need to disconnect the battrey?

The other problem i have which has developed out of the blue. I started engine and for no reason the revs shot up to 30 without touching them. They stayed like this till i was in motion where they went back to normal but everytime i depressed the clutch the revs went back to 30 again.

Any ideas please?

Did this mod although i didn't cut the wires i simply undud the brown clip whuck the brown wires go into and slid them out and then joined them together. That solved the heater problem, but... not the PAS

Hi all!

Just brought a saxo scandal (lovely color scheme!!) for my daughters first car.......needless to say the demister & fan does not work!
Have done a test, joining the two brown wires & all is fine.
My question is why do others recommend using a relay in line? I can't even work out why these wires run through the ignition switch. As far as I can see, power does not run through these wires when the engine is not running, so why do they run through the ignition switch? In other words I can see no difference between the original wiring set up or just joining the two brown wires together!
Any thoughts?

I just want to make this 100% clear.
I have disconnected the red wires from the brown wires.
It says above the picture about cutting wires, but in the picture there is no cut wires wtf lol.
Do i just leave disconnected and bridge the brown wires.

done this trick about 5 month ago and the other day i notice smoke comin from the steering wheel so i took the cover off. the brown wire was red hot and the insulation tape had turn to plastic and was ready to set on fire anybody got any idears about this is this safe

shouldn't be smoking though, there isn't that much current going through them as far as i know :s

just cut the wire again and crimp them again!

I've had this problem aswell, i fixed it by connecting a fused (10A)wire between the 12+v on the head unit to the top plug on the heater fan switch (the one where two wires go in) had no problems and works magic. Although i dont know how well this works on versions with PAS as i dont have anything that modern!! lol

dam mines gone my fuse keeps blowing when i turn the ignition on the fuse then blows will this fix it? or could it be an earthing problem ive checked my wires over and over not sure what it could be if it don't fix it i wont be going to fcs....

dude look at your relay under the dash yellow one, mines burnt to a crisp and the plug replaced the relay but still does'nt work might have to replace the plug also !

I'm driving a p reg VTS, and I'm currently experience a few problems.
1- PAS has completely packed in. It was on it's way out for weeks, whenever the car was first started, the PAS wouldn't work until it had been driven for a few minutes, but would fail again whenever the car stopped. Now it's completely non-existent.
2-Central locking has also packed in. The central locking worked on and off just like the steering, one day it would work, then fail the next. It has finally packed in completely. The car doesn't have a fob, the key has to be used, but for some reason the drivers side lock is very tempramental, and rarely unlocks within the first 10 attempts, but then for no reason will just pop up. I believe this to be a seperate problem to the central locking. It's a real nightmare.
I've experienced no other problems with the vehicle than the ones mentioned. Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated.

i figured that if i whack the cover under the steering column it works again. i have checked under the cover and those wires seem fine.

OK went to a local car dealer & got the cable with the spades. I hooked them up as showing in the picture & ya Fookin Dancer it worked all 3 speeds & also my back window heater Muwhahaha Thx to the OP for this tip & if your ever in Glasgow message me so I can buy you 10 Pints.
