PAS, heater fan , rear demister Repair.

Ok if all three of the above have stopped working this is what you do.

Remove the steering column cover (held on by 2 torx) and under the steering column is a light brown plastic connector with 2 red wires going in the right side and 2 brown wires coming out the left side.

Cut the 2 brown wires and join them together. Make sure you solder the wires or use a proper crimp connector and make sure u use insulation tape to cover it. and tape up the 2 lose ends of the brown wires.

make sure you check you aint just blown a fuse first lol
  3. #3
This is for the people who have checked all the fuses and made sure there is no loose wires any where.
  4. #4
i have the problem of the heaters only working on the 3rd setting, nothing else, top man for hosting the pic tho
  5. #5
So wat are you 'by passing' by just connecting the wires
    1 user thanked this post:
  6. #6
its by passing a switch in the ignition its a common falt on the saxo even citroen do this mod (so ive been told) its this or pay for a new ignition.
  7. #7
Steveosaxo- it could just be the fan switch its self get a new 1 from the scrappys id try that b4 any thing else. cos its only working on 1 setting id say it was the fan switch
  8. #8
what about if you only have one problem not all three
    ?
  9. #9
if uve only got 1 problem then dont do this mod id just investigate the the problem first. this mod is for if all 3 things arnt working.
  10. #10
i had this problem mate and didnt bother fannying about with the wires. i got a new ignition barrel fitted, the contacts went in the old one, its a common fault on saxos, i needed to buy a whole new lock kit from shitreon.
  11. #11
i had my saxo 3 days and then all 3 went lol
i had done the mod and its great citoren engi even told me how to do it!!!

  16. #16
my rear demister is not working and fuse is ok, could this mod rectify it
  17. #17
unless all the otehr things listed are not workign then no its something else
  18. #18
so the two loose brown wires (not on the plug) just connect them together

coz they look like they are taped to the other brown wire

and what is a rear demister
  19. #19
lol, i just started my car up cause it hasnt been for afew days and guess what, the power steering, heaters and rear demister aint working...TYPICAL...

  36. #36
to be fair only my heater doesn't work, in fact just the famous "3rd" setting does... changing the switch didn't help, it simply remained the same, any alternative?
  37. #37
all 3 wasnt working with mine, so i thought id try this, cos the garage was gonna charge me something stupid. . .so i tried it . . and it worked. good stuff!! sounds simple . .but it does work.
  38. #38
these are all electrical items, seems obvious but have you checked all you fuses
  39. #39
i had all 3 fail on me the other day when it was raining so i left the car till it was dry again started it up and the all worked fine i think the rain got in to my electrics but i dont know where the leak could be any ideas?
  40. #40
4 those who have the heater fan working only on 3rd: think that you are happy! I used to have the same problem until yesterday, when the fan started working on 3rd speed, even though it was set on 0
i have no idea how to stop it it's soooo noisy

  44. #44
whats the problem you have all 3 not working

i have just done it on a friends car and its fine

sure you done the right wires
  45. #45
yeah all 3 not working. on the one you just done was the battery light on when u started up before you done the wires?
  46. #46
no that may be a problem with your altenator

did you do the correct wires mate
  47. #47
yes mate, two thick brown wires coming out of the connector.
  48. #48
ummm not sure then checked all fuses and relays
  49. #49
yup lol. got a auto electrician coming round later..
  50. #50
well i sorted it. thought i would check f there was any alternator output. turned out there wasnt. all sorted now with a new alternator.
  51. #51
My pas pump is not working any suggestions???
  52. #52
all 3 of mine do not work

i have removed the trim and can only find 1 brown connector block but only has two thick red wires coming from the right side the other side is not connected to nothing

please help as i have already replaced the pump

has anyone got any pictures of under there dash

    cheers
  53. #53
    IMPORTANT!
A guy on another forum says this mod will drain the battery and bugger up the car! He says it should only be used as a temport fix. Is this right?

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/po...tm?v=i&t=37574

Reading that has given me second thoughts on doing it.
  54. #54
works for everyone thats used it before.

    Best pic i can find:
  55. #55
Is this right that it will drain the battery if you were to connect the two brown wires together as I have the 3 problems???
  56. #56
    no it wont !! FACT
  57. #57
How comes because the ignition relay turns it on and off doesn't it?
  58. #58
right i have this problem , i just want to know if its a good idea doing it this way , yes for some it has worked and others it hasnt , ime just interested wheather or not this is a good thing to do on a long term basis, is it 100% safe etc , and will it last....

or will it be better for me to get it done properly , in other words get the lock kit etc

    all help will be appreciated
  59. #59
just like to say thankyou to topbomb i took the car in thismorning and got my machanic to sort it , it was done within 5 mins and everything seems to be working fine
  60. #60
i had the same few ADS,
i wasnt sure if it was safe?

i went to shitreon, got a new lock key and had the ignition lock coded and new barrel fitted. this wasnt cheap. i fitted the rest of the locks myself. lol

worked a treat and no probs since

i have to say bud i was shitting it , but all good (touched wood) for now , will be interested to see what its like on a long term basis , i found shitreon to cancel my car going in and explained to them what i had done , they said its what they would have tried first , if that didnt work then they would of had to replace all the locks etc , to do the wireing alone they wanted 50quid my machanic done if for me for a tenner so i was quite releaved to say the least

    once again good guide

Bought a 99 Westcoast VTR about 3-4 months ago. Everything was fine until a few days ago, i got in my car for work and found i had no PAS and blowers. Checked this forum for any other experiences, found this great page and found a solution. Went out side to look this thing over, to find mine had already been done before now.... But... this is wot i did find......someone had put in a in-line fuse between the connection of the 2 brown wires and it melt the fuse and it's holder, causing it to fall apart ( losing my PAS and blowers). It appear it was a 30amp fuse and was too strong to break the circuit.... Was thinking of installing a new in-line fuse holder and trying a smaller fuse like a 20a or 25a. So at least it wont overheat and cause melting.

Does anyone else support the idea to put an in-line fuse between the connection of the brown wires?? I find this a more safe and efficent way of making this 'By Pass' work.

Got a pic of damage caused, not sure how to upload it. Can anyone Help
  63. #63
Mate you do not need an inline fuse. I had this problem and fixed it. By joining a bit of wire, all you are doing is missing out the ignition barrel and completing the circuit. Loose the fuse buddy and you just need a bit of wire. If it melted a 30amp fuse, what will it do to a lower one then????? Exactly the same most probably but quicker.

I've just finished carrying out the above mod which has successfully caused everything to work as advertised, so owe you much thanks - pending any future flat batts or molten ignition barrels!

A couple of details that might help others:

The cover requires a T15 torx bit.

The light brown plastic connector comes away from the column by sliding to the right.

    Cheers TBK
  65. #65
well ive tried and it still dosent work
  66. #66
ive lost my blowers and pas.. found out if i used a a fuse instead of a a it would work for a bit then blow.. seems to work when i put a new fuse in until i hit a bump in the road then it blows the fuse.. might try this mod with a new fuse and see
  67. #67
hi i recently bought a saxo and the heater and the de misters dont work and is there a way to check if i have power steering because it might just be broken i realise that this might be the mother of all stupid questions but i really do not know the first thing about cars so please go easy on me
  68. #68
lol soz i do not have power steering
  69. #69
so will this mod work for me then
  70. #70
I just had this problem, but just connected the wires and it worked straight away, not sure if it will damage the wiring loom or not as the battery is constantly sending powering through the wires. whats the longest someone has had this method left for without problems? I am worried about it catching fire.
  71. #71
erm where is the fuse for the PAS?
  72. #72
this is a fucking legend thread! just saved me a few quid mate, repped citroen told me i needed new ignition, robbing cunts lol
  73. #73
I have all 3 problems, so took steering column cover off and found the 2 red wires but no brown wires connected to them? Where could they be?
  74. #74
check the plug connector to the fan. to find this, look up from the excelerator pedal. Mine was corroded and needed cleaning, All now works!
  75. #75
can sum1 plz help cannot find my brown wires
  76. #76

what the hell is a wescoast vtr????lol
ive just tried this method and it works. if people are worried bout the cables melting, put in a switch in between both browns
  78. #78
what if all three are working.... but not 100%? the PAS and heater only work 50/50 and the demister only heats the button... lol
  79. #79
    Had this problem.

had to pay £120 for new ignition switch, Whata cunt.

better safe than sorry though i guess
  80. #80
Can anyone tell me what the 2 brown wires actually do? Can't find them under the steering column, so took whole dash out and still can't find them where do the brown wires start? Please help driving me insane
  81. #81
also bought new ignition barrel and still doesn't work
  82. #82
I have just done this wiring mod and wondered how long have peolple been using there car with it done? Is it a long term or short term fix?
  83. #83
It should be long term mate. It just by-passes the ignition switch, i believe that a lot of people have actually done this.
  84. #84
I did this about year and half ago and all still work fine!
  85. #85
    I've done it....
  86. #86
i had this problem about 2 months ago and it just fixed itself overnight so i thought nothing of it. now it has happened again. i think it is time to do the mod on my car. but before i go ahead i was wondering has this mod ever not worked for some people??? if so, what has happened since and what have you done to fix it???
  87. #87
any one got any ideas on what crimps and wire i need?
  88. #88
    anyone?? need to know asap
  89. #89
    Thanks, all working now
  90. #90
I had this problem, tried the mod and it didn't work (prob my fault somehow). I took out my barrel and tested the wires, the two that trigger the PAS, Heating and HRW was dodgy but all i needed to do was shove the wires back into the body and it worked fine, no need for this mod and definately no need to fork out god knows how much for a new ignition / lock set!
This thread is a beast though!
  91. #91
I have just got this problem to night on the way home, I am 100% sure it is the ignition barrel as it felt very sticky when starting.

On the pic on what to do its says the cut the brown wire but on the picture nothing has been cut, the two clips have been dis-connected and a green wire as been stuck in the light brown contector?

Some one help or an I thinking about it too much and confusing myself?

    cheers guys

hi mate i had the same problem yesterday, i checked the fuses in the dash and one of them had blown, a 10 amp on the bottom row i think, so i replaced it and it works fine now

my heater fan dont work or me rear demister and i have no pas lol.. and itsa been like that since my key got stuck in the barrle and i had to have a good fight geting it out i disconected the battery for about 2 mins then reconected it went to full lock both sides and played about with the key then it came out. and since then the fans have not worked or the rear demister

take the trim around your steering column off and push the six wires into the barrel properly, sounds like you have mucked it up when removing your key, sometimes you can get it to work again by moving the key around whilst the engines running. i had this problem and tested the wires to find which ones worked the PAS e.t.c and shoved them in, bin fine for months!

I know exactly what you mean mate as i haven't got round to doing mine until today!!

took me bout twenty minutes cause i couldn't decide which way to fix it was the best either crimping or soldering

Decided to solder it for a more perminant fixture
  107. #107
i cant find the two brown wires?
the two red ones are just hanging out but not connected to anything and i cant find any brown wires in the area???????

where do the wires go to so i can try follow them back?
  108. #108
Alright, so my rear demister, and heater blower haven't worked since I bought the car.
And the other day I knocked the keys whilst they were in the ignition and the car was running, and the heater blower came on. Trying this again a few times to see if it always happened or was just a fluke, proved that it always happened.
So this inspired me to have a look at how to fix it.
I did so and ended up joining the two brown wires under the steering wheel.
Now my demister works, but my heater blower does not.
    All fuses seem fine.
    Any suggestions?
  109. #109
Turned the engine on today and voila... the blower came to life too.
Now I know there must be some dodgy wiring.. but where? Which are the heater wires?

Yeah, unclip the big brown block to the wires are seperated.

Leave the two red ones on their own, then join the two brown either by cutting the block off and joining them that way or the way thats in the first post:

i tried joining the brown wires and it didnt work for me either and seen your comment, so i took the gamble of buying a 2nd hand one of ebay for £16 and after a fiddly job of fitting it, it worked. I now have power steering ,rear demister and fan blowers.
    Cheers matey

btw i have a mark 2 vts phase one, maybe its cos it is a vts is why it didnt work wen joining the wires or something, maybe the guys and girls it did work for could add to this if they dont have a vts

well my mod that i did worked for a week and it set light whilst driving yesterday!!!

Bought a Saxo for the Mrs earlier this year and had to take it back to the garage from whence it came as the heater blower was not working, then it would and then it gave up the ghost. They sorted the problem out and its worked fine up until last weekend. My son knackered the steering lock up and got the key jammed in it. Got the car home stripped down the steering lock, got the key out and got everything working again ( I thought) . Mrs goes out in car and complains that heater isnt workingSo following everyones advise I removed the wire block and did the conversion and Nothing ,Fookall , denada. Its nearly driving me to sodding .Oh and the rear window heater isnt working either. Ive checked the fuses under the dash as well. Anyone any further suggestions besides a gallon of petrol and a match ??????????????????????? PLEASE

hi mate, i had same probs as you but my power steering had also failed along with heater blowers and rear window demister, seen a comment here on saxexperience that changing alternator should fix prob and changing it with a £16 second hand one did fix it for me, is your battery light on at dash as mine was untill i replaced alternator and resolved all faults

Alternators working fine, checked and double checked it. I spent £5 at the local scrappers and got a new 2nd hand steering lock assembly. got the original one out and swapped the lock assembly over to the newish one , fitted it and everything is now working (fingers crossed) I have noticed one thing tho, the heater blower will only work if the engine is running, Does everyone else`s do the same ????????? If not ive got a newneque car, mind you its used by a weird female

  132. #132
yeah the blowers dont work on all saxos unless the engines running , it was one of the first things i noticed wen i bought the car, never known any other car like that.....who knows how the french think when building cars

Cheers for that info and theres me thinking I had a one off If I had known that before I went and got a newish lock assembly maybe everything would have worked without changing it. Oh well blame the Frogs yet again,

Probably your heater blower motor has gone fella. I had the same problem with my '51 vtr, replaced motor and now all fine.
  139. #139
Does this mean the rear demister and stuff stay on with the ignition off though?
That'd mean flat battery and stuff?

Pretty ideal mod, but surely there needs a fuse or something to stop things blowing?

Correct me if i'm wrong just curious tbh

Like i asked before, my pas works but no heaters or rear heated screen does,,, when your PAS, heated rear screen, and heaters stop working, does the light come up on the rear heated screen button?? because mine does but it doesn't work =\?? any help??

kinda had a go at this earlier but didnt fancy cuttin the wires so just thought id try puttin a screw in between the two terminals for the brown wires, tried to start the car and it wudnt, just cliked so i connected the brown n red wires bak together and it started, i then disconnected them while the car was started and put the screw in and the heaters n rear window demister worked but the when the car was turned off wudnt start agen?
is this because the screw isnt a good by-pass? im scared that if i cut the wires n solder them together then the car wont start lol
any ideas would be great??!! cheers

hi i finally managed to fix the problem i followed the advise with the 2 brown cable conecting to the red under the steering collumn . it worked a treat
thanks alot for the advise and tips given
  149. #149
I had the same problem, No Power Steering, No Heater, No demister, and the battery warning light was on. I was going to attempt the suggested shorting of the wires, but then I applied some logic. This morning was very cold and frosty, ice on the windscreen, and i think this may have caused the problem. I switched on the heater and demister to melt the ice, I think that this causes the battery to put extra demand on the alternator, and in such case, the diodes in the alternator are made to convert high amount of ac to dc, as the battery need more power. The doide is prone to weakness under these condition and can be damaged. So it dawned on me that the Power Steerng is supplied by a high current pump, but only when the alternator is functioning, probably also the heating as well. So I got a voltmeter off a friend, revved up the engine and found that no change to the battery voltage, so i convinced myself that the alternator is the problem. I got a second hand one coming tommorow from 247 carspares on line, cost 20 quid. I have only had my current alternator (brand new) for only 3 months, so I reckon the demand in cold weather has caused the diode to damage.
Guys, maybe you should not do things like i did, and gradually let the car heat up a bit before switching everything on. Hope I have helped.

Thanks sooooooooo much, works great and i dont have power steering! cheers

Bought a saxo the other day then realised had this problem. It's a 1.1i desire 3dr dunno if thats got power steering or not. Tried the fix and nothing so hooked the connections back up. So my problem is no PAS, but I dunno if my models got that. Blowers not working atall and rear window de-mister. Also my battery light stays on, im quite a noob with cars but would you say alternator?
  155. #155
mine did the same, i got those 2 connector blocks on the pic, chopped the end of and soldered them as one big bunch, works a treat now
  156. #156
my 3 av gone but the battery light comes on as well
  157. #157
does the relay click like mad to?
  158. #158
it didnt work, any other suggestions?
  159. #159
i have read through the whole thread and still dont understand what you are doing with the two brown wires. the pic shows the red wires and the brown wires joined by a block, i tried your mod of putting a wire from one to the other and it didnt work as mentioned before. but where is the power coming from to put power down the brown ones? if what you are saying is to bypass the ignition where does the power come from. why would there be power coming back up the brown wire?
  160. #160
can anyone help me with this?
  161. #161
Just join the 2 brown wires together, the red wires stay disconnected. This just basically bypasses the switch in the ignition.
  162. #162
tryed that, it still wont work
  163. #163
this keeps happening to me and i keep buying the wire that goes in the back of the barrel because it seizes up then i cant get the key out i have to bump start the car but obveously i dont have pas r/heat window or blower, WHY does this keep seizing up as i cant be assed changing the wireing every month!

    cheers everybody.
  164. #164
i did exactly as the diagram in this thread shows, everythin works fine again now, cheers mate, good guide!
  165. #165

hi i also have the same problem it was working fine 1 minute and then all 3 gone and battery warning light also appeared! is this part of the problem did this happen to yours if not what else could it be the altenator is still working and belt is fine can you help please ta

    This worked for me thanks
  169. #169
    Jeese,

If you can't get enough help through nine pages better go to Citroen dealer lol

    For all three of those issues;
    check fuses,
    alternator belt,
    battery connections,
    relays,

Try bridging it, you will not need to if you sort out the main problem.

hi guys i made up a lead but obviously not well enough it started to smoke after a few weeks, and i used quite a big lead with crimps on the ends, can i just cut the leads and solder them together or any other ideas? or can someone make me a cable that will be ok, cos i dont want a fire..
    cheers ben

Hay i know that some vehicles have a resistor under the bonnet some where strapped to the bodywork that controlls the speed of the fan. setting three works because this is a straight through connection(full speed) try source this out and replace it if not might be your switch also common problem. Hope this helps.
  173. #173
If your car does NOT have PAS then you can still do this, it worked for me.
  174. #174
ahhh haaaaa my car works super now but after driving it for a few days with the steering like something out of the middle ages it feels so good now.thank god for power steering..
oh yeah and just to answer some peoples questions about is this safe and so on.yes it is a main citroen dealer told me they often do it as a cheaper method to save the cost of replacing the ignition switch etc as it is very costly not for them but for us.it is just your choice if you want this method done and it all depends on if the garage tell you about this method if you do not already kno.i wonder how many other cheaper fixes there are for repairing our cars and how much they are ripping us off.

thanks for all the help on this forum i'll have to keep working out now tho so that i dont lose all the strength i have gained in my arms from steering my car with no power steering
  175. #175
i got the problem wiv all 3gone but it sounds scarry cuttin those wire!
could a novice do this easy???

I am going to opt for this method but first, can i simply cut those wires or do i need to disconnect the battrey?

The other problem i have which has developed out of the blue. I started engine and for no reason the revs shot up to 30 without touching them. They stayed like this till i was in motion where they went back to normal but everytime i depressed the clutch the revs went back to 30 again.

    Any ideas please?

    Thanks
  179. #179
Did this mod although i didn't cut the wires i simply undud the brown clip whuck the brown wires go into and slid them out and then joined them together. That solved the heater problem, but... not the PAS
  180. #180
is this still a ok fix, as anyone added a relay in the bypass as suggested by some other sites.
  181. #181
    Hi all!

Just brought a saxo scandal (lovely color scheme!!) for my daughters first car.......needless to say the demister & fan does not work!
Have done a test, joining the two brown wires & all is fine.
My question is why do others recommend using a relay in line? I can't even work out why these wires run through the ignition switch. As far as I can see, power does not run through these wires when the engine is not running, so why do they run through the ignition switch? In other words I can see no difference between the original wiring set up or just joining the two brown wires together!
    Any thoughts?
  182. #182
I am having this problem with my Pas, H.R.W and blowers.

My problem is that i have a cat1 alarm fitted and if i bridge the connector will this affect my alarm system?
  183. #183
so what if its just the p/s that has stopped working?
  184. #184
Legend, this mod was perfect. so easy to do and saved me a fair bit of cash. Cheers for this.
  185. #185
I just want to make this 100% clear.
I have disconnected the red wires from the brown wires.
It says above the picture about cutting wires, but in the picture there is no cut wires wtf lol.
Do i just leave disconnected and bridge the brown wires.

  186. #186
I bridged the connection through a block connector and all 3 still dont work.
And all the fuses are all ok.
What on earth could it be.

done this trick about 5 month ago and the other day i notice smoke comin from the steering wheel so i took the cover off. the brown wire was red hot and the insulation tape had turn to plastic and was ready to set on fire anybody got any idears about this is this safe
  188. #188
Best not to use leccy tape then

shouldn't be smoking though, there isn't that much current going through them as far as i know :s

just cut the wire again and crimp them again!

I've had this problem aswell, i fixed it by connecting a fused (10A)wire between the 12+v on the head unit to the top plug on the heater fan switch (the one where two wires go in) had no problems and works magic. Although i dont know how well this works on versions with PAS as i dont have anything that modern!! lol

I'm driving a p reg VTS, and I'm currently experience a few problems.
1- PAS has completely packed in. It was on it's way out for weeks, whenever the car was first started, the PAS wouldn't work until it had been driven for a few minutes, but would fail again whenever the car stopped. Now it's completely non-existent.
2-Central locking has also packed in. The central locking worked on and off just like the steering, one day it would work, then fail the next. It has finally packed in completely. The car doesn't have a fob, the key has to be used, but for some reason the drivers side lock is very tempramental, and rarely unlocks within the first 10 attempts, but then for no reason will just pop up. I believe this to be a seperate problem to the central locking. It's a real nightmare.
I've experienced no other problems with the vehicle than the ones mentioned. Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated.

Hi All just had a intresting read through these posts, I am having a siilar problem although the PAS comes and goes, is there any harm in doing this fix if I dont have all 3 problems all the time.
  221. #221
hmmm i had this problem this fix didnt work, its becoming a major issue in winter, this was my conclusion.

Water or dampness was getting into my car maybe just dampness for you might not even see it and the wires for pas, heaters, rear demister were shorting out !

So take carpet away from passanger side footwell your see some wires bolted onto side of car un-bolt wipe spray some WD40 to help disperese water then screw back, also check fuse and relay plug, this worked for me everything works again !

Its worth a go 2min job....
  222. #222
noticed last night if you get the ignition sittin right it all works again, i just turned it very slightly and i was warm again and my arms stopped aching
  223. #223
changed the relay and the wiring loom and the pump and all 3 times it has fixed the problem but now its gone again? any ideas?
  224. #224
I have this problem however the pas was working then went gradually over a few days on and off was well annoying then it went totally the de mister also does not work however the heater and fans work fine on all three settings so im puzzled i guess i could try the ignition fix but the heater works fine on all three? which fuse box is it for the de mister and pas? also if my pas pump has gone what could be stopping the de mister working if the fuse is ok? i have my mot soon and need to fix both of these issues... thanks guys
  225. #225
going to do this fix tomorrow as ive changed everything except the ignition barrel... fingers crossed mot is due!
  226. #226
Does anyone know if a citroen garage would do this since its a common problem with saxos?
  227. #227
bump.getting auto spark to look at my car tomorow same problem.
  228. #228
My car went away to be repaired through Zurich insurance (3rd party admitted liability) and came back with these three not functioning. I've replaced the battery and done this trick and nothing seems to work.. Anyone got any ideas? I expect it is the alternator now as when revving the engine to 2500-2800 rpm the output of the battery stays at 12V where as it should be at 14V if i'm correct? The 25A fuse has been checked and from what I can see are fine.
  229. #229
rang up citroen today they said it could either be the fueses ( got checked today so isnt that) relays or igition tho they are looking £60+VAT just to even look at the car, sooo went to an auto spark today and he said he could prob look at the car and fix it all and in for £50,need it fixed cause when im doing deliverys it so annoying when i have to turn in small tight roads.
  230. #230
really hope this works gunna try on my day off got all 3 not working

i think its a 25amp clear fuse... i had two across the top of fuse box in passenger side. checked both of mine and were ok, so did this mod. it worked for about 20mins whilst driving then the cable i used melted... not sure why - hope someone can tell me!!! am i supposed to use a specific cable? should it get that hot???
  233. #233
would a small piece of aplifier power wire be suitable for this bypass? as ive read in this sticky people have had wires melt & smoke from under the steering colum and was wondering if it would be ok as it can take a large current for an amplifier!!!
  234. #234
going to try this today, is it possible to join the wires before the brown box? really need my heaters back hate goin to work wrapped up like a burst hose
  235. #235
found a easy fix for this guys bit annoying but before you turn engine over put fans on give the key a good wiggle and turn key at same time works every day for me some times it takes a few goes but you get the hang of it....... man i love power steering and heat such a luxury
  236. #236
what a guy. thank you for this lovely piece of advice, its saved me alot of time and money ps did i tell you that you were awsome!!
  237. #237
Ok Ive read every post on this thread, my PAS isnt working but my heaters and rear de-mister are working fine. I have recently had quite a bad leak resulting in a pool of water in my passanger footwell, is there anyway this could of somehow killed my PAS?
Also it started working again for a couple of days then died again.
Its strange though because it was working fine when I parked my car, then when i got back into it about 30 mins later it wouldnt work. (it didnt just go when driving)

If any of you could shed some light on this I would really appreciate it, should I even try this 'fix' or is it pointless as my heaters are working.

Just to inform you all Im clueless when it comes to the workings of a car.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and any help would be great

    Simo
  238. #238
i tryed doing this mod because all 3 went on my saxo but it hasn't solved the problem any ideas????? plzzz
  239. #239
I have this issue with my wife's Saxo however, when I look at the plug you are referring to one side has two red wires and the other side has only one red wire.
Any idea how I can fix this?
  240. #240
after reading all posts i figured i try this even though my heaters worked but pas and rear demister didnt and hey presto my pas fired up straight away, not arsed about demister as i have tinted windows and cant see shit anyway lol but nice to have pas back
  241. #241
ok update, if i hotwire the plug as shown i get pas but no heater and if i connect the wires together i get heaters but no pas??? So confused any ideas?
  242. #242
Got recommended this guide in the newbie section, worked brilliant and sorted my problem. Just for my own reassurance though (paranoid mofo), would a bit of cable from a 230v plug (used the neutral brown cable) be enough to handle this bypass and wont be a risk with current etc?
  243. #243
i have this problem, but my battery light is also on, could this be the problem
  244. #244
this wored a treat for me i had all three problems.. i split the brown from the red wires and soldered brown together tapped up and has been a week or so and is still workin so cheers

    Hello all!

I've just had the problem with the No Fan, No Demist, No PAS occur tonight on the way home from work, so a quick Google led me here.
I've done the 'modification' suggested on page one, in 5" of snow on the coldest night of the year, and all seems to be working fine.

I just want to extend my thanks to this forum for helping me with a problem I would never have solved in a month of sundays

Thank you everybody for this mod, well worth it Now I don't feel like ive done a workout after every journey and my car is not a freezer anymore!!

    Thank you

    PROBLEM FIXED AT LAST!

i tried this mod and didn't work for me went to citroen and they wanted to replace the ignition (in excess of £300 with fitting). i went to a auto electrician and they found and fixed the problem within 45 mins. it was a relay that had gone on mine i HIGHLY ADVISE YOU CHECK THIS before changing your ignition as it only gost me £30.

    hope this helps someone.
  253. #253
So being mechanically not electrically minded I knew I could be in trouble but tried the fix it all seems too easy and of course all three on mine (PAS, blower, heater) still buggered after crimping together.

I have both the battery and engine management lights on which no one else has mentioned

How can I check the alternator as I don't have a test meter.

    Any other suggestions?
  254. #254
Does this work with cars that dont have PAS?? ie, that have know heater or rear dimister workin?
  255. #255
    Si_147
Your heater working only on the third setting comes down to a small resister on the blower that has broken, this can be replaced but it is quite tricky (blower is stashed behind the dash) there is quite a good thread on that if you do a search.
As for the combination of things not working have you tried simply wiggling the key in the ignition or the wires going into the back of the ignition as i did this to solve the same problem, eventually i replaced the small plastic switch section at the back of the ignition (£2 from scrappy) and this fixed all of the problems i was getting.
Hope that helps, plus bye bye everyone i have a new car (Audi S3 ) so am going to change my membership to Audi-sport.net.
Thanks 2 the peeps that have helped me in the past.

    ~bump~

I had the same problem with my Saxo Westcoast, 99 reg. One day the PAS, heater blowers and rear de-mister stopped working.! I struggled with it for about 3 weeks, took it to a garage who even after trying to charge me £60 for a diagnostics check could not find the fault... went to Halfords today and bought the tools and kit for the job shown here. Cost me no more than £14.

And the result? Works perfectly now! Very good resolution to a really shit problem lol... thanks v much for the help! Will be keeping an eye on it from now.

    Reccomend this fix!
  257. #257
Can you cut the wires from the loom and just connect them? =\
  258. #258
So what size wire are people using?
  259. #259
i've jus done this fix n all 3 back up n runnin, ive bin tryin sort this for weeks wish i'd seen this thread!!! the heaters only workin on highest level so rekon need new fan switch or blower motor duno, thanks for the fix tip n pic!!

    Hey There,

Just got under my dash to try this fix, and i carnt seem to find the two red wires anywhere going from my ignition barrel???

I've got as followed going from my ignition barrel

Black and brown - black connector - blue and brown, The blue wire seems to be thiner after the connector

Black and brown - gray connector - brown and white

Can anyone tell me if its any of these? or why i can't find the two red wires coming from the ignition barrel?

Any help would be very greatful,

    Kind Regards.

u need to replace a fuse. mine went today i replaced the 10V fuse with a 25V and it works yaay !
  262. #262
if a fuse blows it has blown for a reason. You should NEVER replace it with a bigger fuse because you could then melt the wire of cause lots of bamage.

It's a bypass from the barrel which is now faulty this why you have got these 3 not working and by bypassing the barrel the current can complete it's circuit
  271. #271
by doing it this way, which type of wire will i need to join the brown ones 2geva

yea but mine stays on all the timethe ignition is on so i am guessing the switch inside the ignition is stuck on. So say if i join the wires will they just come on when the engine is started ? thanks
  273. #273
I've just removed my steering column cover and found that i have the 2 red wires coming down from the ignition but the 2 brown wires are no where to be seen, does anyone know where they would have been moved to if someone else had tried the modification, it's really f-ing irritating cos all 3 aren't working.
  274. #274
yeah but what im asking is will the pas and heater blower now work when the ignition is turnt on and not started ? thanks
  275. #275
Just been having alook at this post and this problem has just appeared on my car today checked all the fuses and all ok ,by linking out the barrel what else are you doing .
  276. #276
Before doing this check it not your alternator as I got AA out to my saxo as power steering, blowers and back demister not working. They noticed that the battery light stays on when you start the engine up and the 3 things dont work but as soon as you rev the engine a bit the battery light goes off and all 3 work again. He said that the alternator is not charging on tick over. Still ok to drive but will get worse so new alternator needed at a later date I think.
  277. #277
my heaters dont work and it is fffrrreeezzziiiinnn any 1 knw how to fix?????? (help)
  278. #278
Ive just had these three problems, and my battery light had come on too, is this normal?

This might also sound stupid, but do you do this bypass thing with the engine running or not?
  279. #279
Any heavy electrical loads can only be used once the alternator is charging. You could bypass these circuits but if you are not charging you will soon drain the battery and the car will not run. Eventually you will not be able to start the car anyway if the alternator is not charging the battery.

Fix....replace the alternator once you are sure it is that at fault.

Hi, I have a citroen saxo 1.5 diesel and today the power steering just packed up.
I have tried the modification and this has not worked.

The heater blower and rear demist work fine.

I have checked fuses and all seem fine. Where exactly is the relay?
Car has been fine until now.

Before I did the modification I unplugged the wires and just inserted a link wire just to try it and I swear it seemed that the steering was lighter, so I made a good strong wire link with correct terminals and now this does not work.

Any ideas where the relay is? and can anybody suggest anything else please.
  282. #282
hi i have a problem with my 1997 vts the powered steering cuts out when i turn the heater fan on i need help.
  283. #283
    Hi,

really sorry to ask as i know it will have been asked a million times already. just i dont want to go trawling through 15 pages looking for the answer,

My battery died earlier, changed it and had the problem of all 3 not working. i did the fix (which i know works in most cases as i had to do it on my older saxo and it worked then) but after trying the fix i still have no joy, the battery light is on all the time, do you think its the alternator that needs replacing?
  284. #284
    fuses...............
  285. #285
Sorry forgot to mention, checked all the fuses.
  286. #286
    you are a life saver
  287. #287
The first thing you need when messing with any electrics is a multi meter. Start the car, test voltage, If its 11-12v then the alternator can't be working, if it is 13-14v then the alternator is working and your problem is else where.
  288. #288
right my power steering doesnt work and my heaters only work on the top level but my rear window de mister still works does anybody know what my problem is and could help plz?

    all help appreciated

I have just started experiencing the problem with the PAS and heaters but havent noticed the rear demisters but its only intermitant. do u think this is the same problem?
  291. #291
hi what great post, my saxo heater sytem wont work on any of the settings, i bought it like it it also comes with race airfilter and thought that that might be why mines not working, but im going to try your way first as in your picture and was wondering what size spade connectors did you use ;-)
  292. #292
hey guys kinda have a similar prob but i have a 2001 forte 1.1 i dont have power steering tho but my blowers and rear screen stopped working the other day bloody typical in this weather but the matrix seems to be ok when driving i can feel heat from the vents and the screen starts to demist but no blowers or heating when not moving very annoying does anyone think this method will solve my prob also my fuse blows when i switch my rear fogs on but i suspect this might just be a bulb. thanks guys.

    peace out

I signed up, just so that i could reply to this thread

I have absolutely no experience with cars, i don't even have a license, I've never owned a car, nor have i ever tried to repair one before. Yet this thread managed to guide me well enough to fix my mom's car (helping her save the 300$ fix at the insanely expensive mechanics here in Denmark)

This was enough to save a hell of a hassle with the coldfront over scandinavia this winter. (and it saved enough money for us to have a decent christmas after all!)

    Can't thank you enough!!

Hey all, I got to page 6 of 15 and didnt see my problem.

    Got an Eastcoast 1.1i.
Just my demisters don't work, is it just a standard fuse? or a relay? and how do you check if a realy switch is knackerd? Blackening of the contacts??
Is a clicking of a relay normal? e.g. when my wipers are on i hear a click before and after they do their cycle.just wondered if its a sign that its on its way out. (Possibly a really silly question to ask as i understand its a switch, kind of)

Loads of questions but any help would be ace,

similar issue here, just wondering what gauge wire did other use ? the stock wiring seems pretty heavy, but i'm not to pushed on snipping the two red cables in order to loop them ..

    HI,
My problem is that it is only the fan that does´t work. i have take a look at the fuses and none of the are broken. so i toke a multimeter and put them into the cable back of the 3 ways switch in the front and it shows 12v, then i toke a cable and wired 2 of cables together in the stick with out the switch. and nothing is working. so is it correct that it is my fan there are broken, and if it is how do i get in to that ???? because im thinking when im getting 12v through the switch it is not the wiring or fuse there should be the problem correct ???????????????
  305. #305
    Hi,

i have done the thing to the wires and still no luck with any of them . . . any ideas?

I have just aquired a 1996 VSX Saxo this week with the above problem. Its been stationary so I am not sure about the power steering.

Following your thread , I have exposed the three connectors coming from the ignition barrel but the brown one has 2 thick red wires coming from the barrel side with only one thick pink one one the other side of the connector.
I've looked into the connector on the pink wire side and there is no second electrical lug present. In other words only one of the red wire is connected to the pink wire. The second red wire has no outlet

Everthing else in the vehicle is working with the connector open (apart from the fan and HRW) and and a lamp test shows a current flowing from the pink wire.

    Appreciate any help

Also does anybody know which relays do what ?
  310. #310
    URGENT HELP

On my 1996 VSX (HRW and blower not working) I don't have two brown wires from the brown connector and two reds on the other side.. I have just one orange on one side and two reds on the other . Both the reds are dead and the orange shows a current when the vehicle is running.

alright folks, am in same boat here, have 1.1 desire y reg, hrw, blowers and pas are bolloxed, tred the fix but unfortunately dosent work, battery light on too, checked fuses wiring etc to no joy, im asssumin its the alternator, but if any help or know of cheap second hand one it would be appreciated thankyou steve
  323. #323
Funnily enough this randomly happened to me this morning before work, I'm going to investigate tomorrow as I have a day off but I can't stand bloody electrics.

My rear demister is fine & my heaters are fine, the battery light has been lighting up a litle bit lately so I'm guessing it could be the alternator.
  324. #324
Just to bump this up, cracking thread this.

my rear demister & heaters were actually dead aswel, don't think I checked them before I just assumed as I thought they were blowing on the way to work.

I found the brown connection block & as a test I rounded the circuit off with a 10p piece, started the car and boom PAS/heaters & demister all back on, going to go down maplins shortly to get some wire/terminals to do it properly.

    Thanks rep!

    Hi all,

As posted on the recent power steering problem post, I have the same problem as azzer1987. Rear De-mister hasn't worked for ages but im not bothered about that. My power steering doesn't work when the car/engine bay is cold. For example, its worked all summer no problem but last winter and this one now its only working when car as been ticking over or driven then left ticking over for a while and engine bay is warm.

Im an aircraft engineer by trade so im pretty good at fault finding but can't think what it could be. At first thought it could possibly be water contamination in the fluid then freezing blocking the pump, but its not been that cold (im gonna change the fluid anyway).

I changed the relay last year and it didn't solve it. I can't be a mechanical fault because it wouldn't be intermittent, it would be fu*ked all the time. The only other thing I can think of is it could the cold affect the electrical resistance in the circuit via a bare wire somewhere???

Any ideas or experience of this???

    Dave
  336. #336
Anyone got a full wiring diagram of this circuit they can scan and post on here??

Need to see which wire is the exciter for the relay.

Another happy customer. Did this mod yesterday and everything's back to normal.

Took it round the garage told him that the PAS, heaters and demister weren't working - he said he used to work for Citroen and the easiest thing to do is this mod.

Wanted £50 to do it like, so I did it myself.

    hi

i had this problem come up recently, power steering, heater blower and rear screen demister..

i proceeded to carry out this mod and the red wires underneath the dash are already loose, with the brown wires no where to be seen..

i need to know where the brown wires initially trace back to? where do they start out?

    thanks in advance!

    Hi Guys!

Had my Saxo since July last year and have had this problem on and off since driving it, before now replacing the fuse has always solved the problem. However Thursday it happened again so as per usual I replaced the fuse, this time the new fuse just popped straight away. Along with the other three I tried after this, including a 30 and a 40 amp fuse. So the weekend me and my brother (mechanic for 15 years) did this mod, and once again the fuse just popped. We checked the feed from the barrel and all seems fine, we disconnected the rear screen heater and the power steering seperatley and still no luck.

So anyone got any other idea's? We where thinking maybe a burnt out wire shorting it out but could do with a wiring diagram to trace where the wires go, if anyone could help us out with that too, that would be great.

    Cheers Mat!

    Just as an update;

I did this mod on my VTR today after visiting Maplin for the components.

They sell a 30A wire for £1.79 per metre (minimum purchase 1m) and the necessary spade connectors in a pack of 10 for £1.89.

Gives at least 5 chances of getting it right for under £4.

    Thanks for the write up.
  354. #354
My rear demister is not working, same as my power steering but heaters are fine. Any help please?
  355. #355
Right i think i might be having this problem now also? ive changed the pump and every time i now turn the ignition on it blows the fuse inside the car that controls the pas, heater and de-mister. Is this what happens if the barrel is faulty or would this be down to another issue. The car still works fine but just cant seem to get the above three items to work. Help would be awesome.
  356. #356
It won't hurt anything by doing this mod, so give it a go.

I think it'll fix your problem.
  357. #357
Hi, I have looked through a lot of pages on this in the last few days,I'll start with power steering not working, heaters and rear demist also not working,I tried the MOD but still nothing, swapped the relay, still nothing, changed the pump, still nothing,I don't have the battery light staying on so i'm hoping that rules out the alternator,Can anyone please tell me what else it could be? never had any bother with the older saxo's but this 03 plate VTR is starting to do my nut in,Thanks in advance
  358. #358
After a lot more looking on the web I keep coming back to this MOD, so in the morning al have another go straight from the brown wires because there is an alarm system wired into the red wires and i'm hoping that after that it should be fixed

hi everyone, first post for me (although i've been using this place for all kinds of help for about a year!)

my gf called out the RAC for this pas, blower, demister problem combo and the guy did the same mod as the beginning of the thread and it worked a treat.

as it was the middle of the day, my gf didnt think to test everything out (like lights).... when i got home i found that the dashboard doesn't illuminate when you put the headlights on. the panel lights (battery, handbrake etc) light up, but i cant see how fast i'm driving in the dark! the clock also had the wrong time on it. first thing i checked were fuses, they are all fine.

i have read before that the clock and the dash lighting are connected. given that this happened after the RAC chap did the mod that this thread is based on, could anyone give me any pointers on what to look for - dislodged cables etc.
any help greatly appreciated. i am a bit of a novice though so be gentle

hello everyone, first time post, tried this mod and unplugged the battery while I did it, now the car wont start, my key light on the dash board is flashing, Im pressuming this is the immobiliser, I have no key pad or buttons on the key, just a normal key, any ideas as to what I have done , Im in the dog house with her indoors, tried the removed battery for an hour trick.

Undo everything that you did. Then try start the car you may have possibly locked your ecu.

undone everything and will now start but still have no fan and demister any ideas ?

Follow this guide then try the heater fix.

This will leave you with no immobiliser on your car though so its up to you if you want to take the risk.
  364. #364
only problem was when i did the fix and immobolised the car the fan and the demister still didnt work ???????
  365. #365
I have this problem with PAS and blower, haven't checked the rear demister yet. My battery light is also showing. Does this mean more than the remedy shown?
  366. #366
    Hi
I put a thread on here about not having any PAS then read through further on here and have now found out like many others that I have no heater and no rear demister. We have checked and it looks like one of the red wires from the barrel is broken inside? there doesnt seem to be much room to get to it?
Any ideas please as we are sure this is the problem but if we can fix it ourselves then that would be great.
    Thank you
  367. #367
Can anyone tell me where this wire goes to?

Not had my new phase 1 vts long and these 3 stopped working. I found this post and thought brilliant this looks simple

However upon looking I found the red wires from the ignition straight away but they were already disconnected and the other wire is no where to be seen...

Thinking perhaps it's been done already by a previous owner but before this point somewhere and theyve torn the rest of the wire out? Or hid it away somewherw

Obviously at the moment x im quite lost without blowers

    Thanks in advance
  368. #368
hi there, I'm a newbie on here, and would like some help, where is the relay located for the power steering ?
  369. #369
try fitting new thermostatic switch possibly mounted in end of radiator! shouldn't cost too much??
  370. #370
I was skeptical about this... But I thought fuck it.

You don't need to disconnect the battery to do this. I cut the wires and touched them and didn't die or get shocked, anything for a cheap buzz these days..

Personally I doubt it drains your battery since the wires do not have a permanent live feed.

Initially when I completed the bodge it didn't work, so I cried a little. But saw a 25A fuse next to me... Shoved that in and tried again.. Worked a treat!!

    Thanks for this mate.
  371. #371
My 3 died yesterday checked the 25 amp fuse and it wasn't blown so tried this mod was so sure it was gonna work got me hopes up a little flicked engine on but it didn't work :-(

Has anyone else got any suggestions for anything else I can try because I'm stuck and my car feels like igloo tank to drive and looks like I've been dogging!

Any suggestions and I would be very grateful :-)

    Any help????
  396. #396
If all 3 have gone again and it's not a fuse then it's something connected to the wiring that you done the fault it's self is the ignition barrel and by doing this fix it bypasses the ignition barrel so you have two options new barrel and keys all around or redo the fix with all new wire
  397. #397
Also you can try and turn the car on with heaters on and wiggle the key
  398. #398
Can you bypass the the fuse box as no power getting to said fuse and is there a relay also
  399. #399
Hey all. First time asker. Long time reader.

My PAS pump isnt working. Its a real pain when reversing. My heats and rear window demister works fine. I'm checked the fluid and it looks like its all there. But thats as black as the ace of spades. I'm wondering if you guys know whats up and if its the relay then where abouts is it. Cheers

nope battery light goes out as soon as I start the car ?? I went to my old workplace today which is a citroen main dealer and spoke to one of the techs and he reckons I have a short in the circuit somewhere so told me to do a continuity test of the 3 affected items.

I shall update this evening on the result of this

    hello to all,

i have the following problem with my saxo: when i'm starting the car, the pas, heater fan , and rear demister doesn't work, but after 1-10 Minutes they work as normal, and dont stop anymore.
I've tried this repair idea, doesn't work. I've changed the heater fan resistor, but the problem is the same...

    anyone an idea?
can i try to give +12V directly to the connector of the heater and pas, to keep out the ignition swich problem?

    thanks a lot!

    Hi folks,
I've been through this entire thread hoping to find my problem, but haven't, any suggestions welcome because I'm totally stuck.

My daughter has a 2003 1.5D and after driving about 10 miles to work the other day, the power steering pump wouldnt go off, even with the engine. It drained the battery eventually.
Heater fan working on I and II but not on III, HRW is OK. Thought it might be a faulty relay, so changed that but still the same issue. As soon as I connect the battery, the power steering pump starts.
Been under it tonight and the wires from the power steering pump look OK, is it worth checking the alternator? The motor starts fine once the battery has a bit of juice in it but the steering pump knocks everything out with a bit of load. No random lights on in the dash or anything.
Cant see it being a fuse with the HRW and heater fan working. Somebody said take out all the fuses and reset the ECU, but surely the battery being disconnected for a while would have the same affect.
Totally stuck and any help appreciated.

I bought a 2002 saxo 1.1 Desire lastnight, The owner told me that he had replaced the PAS pump and all it needed was a relay. I took the old relay out and noticed that the plastic around one of the spades was slightly melted. The owner said he was told to fit a new relay BEFORE fitting the PAS pump (for whatever reason I do not know) Anyway I went to a breakers and bought 4 relays as they were only £1 each and didn't like the idea of having to travel back and forth all day if I only bought one. I tried one of the relays in the breakers yard and the PAS seemed to work for about 8 seconds then just stopped.

The heater always works fine as does the rear demister.

I've checked the fuses and I even tried the "fix". I also smacked the pump itself with a hammer, but nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Turns out is the battery fuse box connector and it connects to the ignition barrel according to my wiring diagram but I can't see how it connects to the ignition barrel. It can't connect directly as the connectors are different anyone know how it connects?

Finally sorted mine by changing a burnt out orange coloured relay under the passenger, side footwell behind the fuse box. Worth a look.

Before cutting wires or buying a new ignition barrel, check that the engine is running first. The heated rear window and heater fan are disabled until the engine is running (activated by the alternator) so that you aren't drawing loads of current when starting the engine

No need for the pic really, look at the wires coming out your ignition barrel and youll see the two browns.

No need to cut wires, I did this mod and no difference fault still re appeared. I obtained a non transponder ign lock and switch barrel from e bay as an aftermarket aftermarket purchase. Split the lmechanical lock part from the plastic switch part which has all the wiring going into it. This can be separated by the external screw on the metal body. You will need a security screwdriver set for this. Remove the existing lock barell and switch on the car .take to bench and do the same split the mechanical from the switch. Put aside the switch part. Fit the new switch from the aftermarket to your existing mechanical lock barrel , reassemble into the steering column. I found replacing the cables the connectors were different colours but went with the cable wiring colours matching the existing harness. So far so good. You will need a security screw set to remove replace the small screw holding the ignition barrel in the car.
