Reset Timing - 106 GTi

  1. #1
Have done HG on my car and started up and is now making a horrible noise, can only be described as a knocking.

Had my mechanic mate round and said it sounds like heavy pre-detonation. When I took the belt off I locked it off on one camshaft as I had done the cambelt the month previous and had no issues.

Now I need to completely reset the timing and need to know a few things.

How do I know when 1 + 4 are at TDC?

My cam pulleys look like this

And I am correct in thinking that the slots should line up with the holes in the head?

    Cheers

Now should the adjustment be so that the 3 bolts on the pulleys are bang in the middle?

yes, both cams should be locked, and the crank should be locked through the hole in the block. slightly slacken the 10mm bolts on the cam pulleys when tensioning the belt, this allows the belt to tension without the cams moving.

the position of the three bolts is not an issue, you should have the crank set at TDC with the pin inserted, the 3 bolts loose in each sprocket on the cams. Then put the timing pins in the cams and fit the belt, re-tighten the bolts in the sprockets and then take out the timing pins. if the pins are all in then everything should be locked in the right place

SO Im guessing the pin into the flywheel only goes in with 1 + 4 at TDC?

When you lock the flywheel cylinder 1 is at TDC.

SO once Ive locked it off at TDC. I know the cams will be somewhere near so I could then take the belt off and fine tune it until its all spot on?
