Rattle Noise Rear Of Car

  1. #1
Hi, i have a rattle most times when i hit uneven surfaces or bumped and its coming from the rear of the car i THINK on the right side. To be honest the best way i can explain it is it sounds like the exhaust hitting metal but had it on a ramp and gave the exhaust a good shake down and it dosent hit anything.
Anyone have any ideas on what it could be?
    Cheers

Could be tha rear axle on it way out m8 have a look for Negitve camber and jack the rear of the car up and see if you can move the wheel up or down

was just going to post a topic like this. I have the same, as in when my rear wheels go over a bump there is a metal on metal kind of rattle like the exhuast hitting something. But I am 99% sure the exhaust isnt touching anything as I have been under it to have a look the same as mase.

Ive been driving with my windows closed and music on just so I dont have to here it lol

ARB end plate(s) are probably loose. Make sure the 13mm bolts are tight - there's one on each plate.

so they will be noticably loose then?

Is that what this thread is about?

The bolts can be fairly tight and still give you the 'clinking' noises over bumps.

Both my Saxos have made the noise a week or so after being lowered... both times it was solved by just nipping the bolts up. Probably only got ~1/4 of a turn on them, but it's enough to stop the noises.

If that doesn't work, you can try following that guide.

wouldnt say mine is a click though more of a loose rattle metal noise like the exhaust is loose and touching on something over bumps but ive checked it and checked it again

Worth giving this a go I supose though as it wont take 5mins

The ARB noise is a bit like two dinner plates/ milk bottles hitting together.

May aswell check for play in the trailing arms while your checking the bolts.

    hmm doesn't sound like that

Will give it all a check anyway and tighten it all, will take the spare wheel etc out too and take it for a test drive.

i had that, it was some little white plastic thing in the breather hose stuff on the fuel tank

Stumbled on this thread by googling my after myself and two other mechanics have been scratching our heads as to what this noise could be. This seems like the only possible thing it could be, had the guy at the MOT testing station baffled as he said the car was sound underneath and the rattle was nothing obvious.

So I'm going to try and attempt this tonight. Been looking at these M8 bolts to screw into the ARB http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.js...Type=hex_bolts are these the right length with the supplied washers?

While the wheels are off I may aswell replace the plate 13mm bolts with high tensile variants, where would I get these from as I can't find any on B&Q.
