engine rebuild - head

  1. #1
So im getting on with my engine rebuild project (pics/progress thread to follow if anyones interested)
Got the head off to find its got a snapped valve, obviously this will be replaced. Im just wondering what else i should be renewing/uprating on the head whilst i have it off, so far ive got:

Damaged valve, camshaft oil seals, cam ladder seal, cam followers, valve stem seals. Is there anything ive missed? or would you say im going a bit far?

Also, is it only worth uprating valve springs/solid lifters for a high revving engine? Worth having some headwork done as its off?

Sorry there's so many questions, thought it would be better than starting multiple threads.

how much did this cost you if you dont mind me asking?

if you are going for head work i would look into tripple vavle seats and bigger vavles, also look into getting your valves shimmed up so they will stay open for longer

need,s an expert to grind out ports and head and balance them all to the same cappacity =£££

Any moron can grind metal away but proper headwork = ££££

On a rebulid i would do what you said plus lap the valves in & skim. Seats only need doing if they are starting to burn out. Id also check followers for wear but valve springs are only needed if going for a wild cam.

cheers for the replies. I would only consider having any headwork done by a reputable engine builder/tuner, its not something id attempt myself.
Wizzy, what do you mean by "lapping" in the valves? Similar to grinding them in? Im not too clued up on this sort of thing

No-ones really asked what your desired engine spec is yet? purpose of use? road / track?

Awaits posts calling me a dreamer, but I want to turbo it.
It will predominantly be for road use, so will need to pass a mot, im not after silly power. I plan to build it with a fairly good spec so that no part is near its limit in a effort to keep it reliable ish, if that makes sense.
Planning on using low comps, probably forged rods as well, and a t25/28 turbo.

As for the head, a good port and polish will help it flow the boost better, so that will be benefical. But I doubt I will need stiff valve springs as I doubt il will rev high enough to warrant them, unless there's another reason to fit them? I wont be using stupidly high lift cams/shims as I understand that will lead to 'charge robbing'.
Cam choice at the moment is piper bp285's (already own), standard vts cams (already own) or buying some turbo spec ones. Im also undecided about the benefits of fitting larger valves.

I have a lot still to decide in regards to the head, apolagies for the long post

I don't know anywhere i would trust to do headwork. Seems to be a bunch of cowboys everywhere from what i've heard (and my own experience)
