Aye when its not falling apart its not bad. Semi slick tyres and diff have made the biggest difference. Quite scary how much speed you can carry with them on.
Just have to remember to tone it down when I am back on the standard wheels haha

Misty windows will be fun in the mornings when its freezing cold! Experinced that last year, had to drive with my head out the window at some points . It was cold.

    Get a demister setup mate.
  40. #40
lol, i use that rain-x anti mist which seems to work some times but i also carry a microfibre with me aswell
  41. #41
I prefer to just keep the luxuries even if it will make me a millionth of a second slower round track lol
  42. #42
i am keeping my heater, things that i will be losing for next year is PAS and ABS, but keep the heater inside, just cutting away some of the dash, and flocking it,

i just want to get to around the 800 markish, 800kg with 166 bhp on very good chassis setup and good tyres will be very quick
  43. #43
also after going in a car with atb diff and car without a atb diff is needed, will make you quicker, as it easier to get back on the power earlier coming out of the corner,

do you go round tracks with the keys in the door???
and vmaxx coilies erm oh dear go buy a spax or apex kit and feel the huge improvement in handeling
  53. #53
Hmm I would never run an bodies open, can get fine dust into the bore that can mark the Walls, really not smart to run them without even on the track, and that Yates setup is a very good setup I would run that if I would change.

But would never run without a filter and socks are poor, would get a proper filter.
  54. #54
Also car above is way too low! Handling will be bad that low, also the drive shafts will be at bad angles,
  55. #55
depends on what price, but i have the full itb set up, then the ecu and loom to go with. if you are serious then give me a pm im sure we could sort something out

as said i wouldnt run bodies without a filter or box

May i suggest Apex as a better alternative, lil bit more value for money

Wouldnt recommend the PSX kit. There has been alot of reports of the dampers failing recently some with not much milage on them atall.

The Spax VSX kit with the non adjustable dampers is better and of course £100 cheaper than the PSX ones, have never heard any problems with them either.

Ive recommended Apex as theyre firmer than the Spax so in theory should offer better performance on track.

Apex with the 35mm springs would be a tidy option. 50mm also pretty good although 35mm is closer to the handling 'ideal' HOWEVER unless you're spending alot of money on other parts of the suspension and pushing the car hard you probably wont notice any difference between the two.

As willsy said get the vsx over the psx if your set on the spax kit.

Would you actually even use the adjustability of them at all.

I doubt you would (may be wrong) but save the money and go with the vsx.

Save a little more and get billies though tbh.

Ok, i was thinking about b6's or b8's but as i just starting i don’t think there any point at the moment. i would go with 35mm to be honest as i know my car is to low at the moment, i will look in to a apex kit now, thanks for all your help

Yep they sure do mate. Re-read my post and it sounds like I'm a twat, I'm not really . My car isn't a great spec at all but it does the job, you would be surprised what a saxo can keep up with. Tyres are a big factor for me, started off on road tyres and then took the plunge and bought some A048's, and to be honest they are amazing. So much quicker through corners and was managing to keep up with a lot faster machinery out there.

I'm only using the Spax PSX kit, I havn't had any problems with it at all. The adjustability side of them is a bit of a gimmick as I don't think I have changed it since setting it up but I find it good value for the money. If I were you I would save up and buy Billies or even AST stuff. They are quite a bit more expensive than the Spax stuff but you get what you pay for!

Ok mate no worries, .. well i thinking i was thinking b6's or b8's but as i am newbie to this i might go for spax then upgrade when i get better, my mate is selling spax psx front shocks i bought the rears of him last week so i might buy the front just for now, . my treys are proxy 4s on the fronts and t1r's on the rear, (they are a death trap in the wet) i am looking at some Prada spec 2's, my mate works a deamon tweaks so i can get a good discount .

Also what would i was thinking 266 brakes with red stuff pads, would this be a good set up cheers dude
  71. #71
Get B8s over B6s. Just get the spax shocks off your mate to start with and see how they feel. Then if you wanted to upgrade to some better look at B8s or coilovers.
As for tyres, set yourself a budget and have a search around to see whats in your price range.
266 brakes with a set of decent pads & discs will work well. iirc the red stuff pads are more for track use, so wouldn't be that good from cold but once got some heat into the pads they'll be alot better. Maybe look at some Mintex M1144s as they'd be better for road use.

If you think them toyos are deathtraps then do not get parada's Just because theyre cheap.

I suggest you have a good read around for what poeple think before wasting your money.

Make sure you keep the simple questions out of this section, but maybe make a thread on what brakes etc and hopefully some good in depth answers will be posted in return
  73. #73
Preferably not "what brakes" but something a little more specific
  74. #74
I cannot stress enough, do not bother with Spax PSX dampers, certainly not 2nd hand ones.

Yet another person came to us today for lowering having bought some 2nd hand struts containing Spax PSX dampers. Supposedly low milage and good condition.

Stripped the struts down and damper fluid was absolutely everywhere. Not doubting the low milage either, they looked spot on, but seals absolutely shagged and lots of play.

Im with Harv A048s are epic. did my first day with some yesterday at oulton and they were epic

did a good bit of elise chasing and they still felt like they had more in reserve. Were even quite good in the rain in the afternoon once they had a bit of heat

Haha awesome!! They are worth every penny in reality, just seems a bit expensive when £430 goes out your bank account for a set of rubber

At Oulton, I couldn't find the point where they were beginning to 'let go'. It was a warm day and perfectly dry though but each lap was getting quicker and quicker and the level of grip felt the same .

Willsy, my Spax PSX dampers are fine, I do inspect them every 2 months or so though when I have parts off the car. As you say though, there are a lot better kits out there.. I only bought the Spax stuff due to being on a tight budget with uni and all, think I paid £140 delivered for them brand new off ebay and they are awesome for that price!

Harv, at £150 are you sure you dont have the VSX dampers instead (non adjustable ones which are £230 usually with springs) as the PSX ones are the adjustables which are £300+.

VSX ones im yet to heard of any issues with so certainly they are much more reliable and better quality for much cheaper price.

Nope I definitely have the PSX ones, I have a little tool thing/adjuster to alter the stiffness on the fronts (on the topmount retaining nut), then just a slot for a flat head screwdriver on the rear.

I bought mine off ebay, there were loads knocking around 7 or 8 months ago for £150, I think Halfords got 'rid' of all their stock and sold them to their employees for a couple of quid. Obviously stuck them on ebay and made some profit out of them

EDIT: They are like £350-£380 on ebay now. To be honest I wouldn't pay anywhere near that for them, £150 is reasonable for what your getting but for £380 I would rather save another £200 or so and buy Billie Group N's or even AST's (if they ever came )

Cant wait to give them a go on a fully dry warm day

If you skip the first couple of warm up laps this is them in the damp and I am not pushing them to their limits at all still as I was still learning the track

Was hearing good things about these at oulton park from a couple of people. Do they do them in a saxo friendly size though? ie 195/50-15

Yes so far. Well im not 100% sure on fronts as theyre adjustable and the key for the damping is gold. Toad said they were very good though and very sharp and responsive.
  88. #88
Yer I got some 195 50 15, side wall are so stiff!!!

I got a good deal normal price is like 123 quid, I got them for 80 quid.

I got yokohama c drives for £0. It's as much as i could morally haggle down
  90. #90

Admittedly i'm not using the car anymore, but this is the setup it had:

    Engine
    1997 106 GTi 1.6 16v engine
    3" Pugsport
    Raceland enclosed induction
    Powerflex lower mount
BakerBM GrpA lower mount fork bush

    Suspension
    -60mm on 'Puma' springs
    Spax adjustable PSX dampers
    Powerflex ARB and Wishbone bushes
    Upper OMP strutbrace
    24mm Rear ARB

    Brakes/Wheels
    266mm 306 XSi brakes
    Mintex discs
    OMP Road & Sport pads
Brake 'ducts' (aluminium tubing cable tied to the wishbone to scoop air from under the car, aimed at the calipers)
    106 Rallye Steels (5.5J)
    Kumho KU31 tyres

    Interior
Rear bench, doorcards, parcel shelf, carpet & sound deadening removed
1 x Raceland reclining bucket seat
1 x RMD Maximum Protection bucket seat
    106 Rallye 'half' door cards
    RMD 330mm dished steering wheel

I personally wouldn't say it felt to be a particularly bad setup, but the 24mm rear ARB definately made the rear a bit too lively for my tastes, perhaps because it was mated to the 19mm front, which unbalanced it? Power wise, it seemed to go well enough, and the brake and tyre combo seemed to be great, obviously the tyres could've been much stickier, but as a compromise between daily use and track work, they seemed to be well up to the job.

On a good sunny day when she is nice and clean it looks immense however she's starting to build up a nice list of problems for me to fix

    *Wheels need respraying
*The 195/50 tyres rub on the arch liners and broke the n/s one off parking the other day
*The n/s bottom door part of the bodykit has snapped a tiny bit of the bumpstrip off where it was catching the door on open/close
*Developed a squeek in both doors...grrrrr

Future plans...possibly replace the exhaust system (tried replacing with a kam system but didn't fit) and get a 4-2-1. Also may try getting hold of some gloss black steelies with some decent rubber for tracks. Some morette headlights would be nice for a decent air feed to the bmc which is currently sucking in hot manifold air and is attached with zip ties to the strut brace and jubilee clip to the hose around the throttle body. Also have a baker BM quickshift to fit (xmas present)

It handles and is fast enough for me to deal with so don't really see the need for more power its fine if you keep it above 4000rpm anyway. Good driving is worth an extra 100bhp imo..

Been to the ring in it and done Brands Indy (in the snow) it liked the ring but Brands not so much but have another day in Februrary booked..

lol this is true but the car does seem to prefer the short sharp corners rather than the long one's also have to say the T1-Rs are a pile of poo but for £27 can't really moan..
  108. #108
for track session would want a better trye will improvement the expreience alot more, the t1r seem to over heat very very fast... i had them over heating after about 5 mins, that why i am now moving to semi slicks... to get more from my day.
  109. #109
A road tyre (T1R) will never last long on a track...
  110. #110
T1r's have the softest sidewall I've come across, are great Tyres for streching though!
  111. #111
To be honest i got them as they were cheap and wanted a 50 profile tyre to soak up the bumps on the road that bit better (which they do) had 45 proxes 4's on the ring and they wern't too bad. Will get some better tyres as and when i can afford as well as some c5 (or light) steelies
  112. #112
Maybe worth trying that Hankook RS2 Z212 in 195-50-15 for a trackday... only £52 from Camskill...

If you want a stiff sidewall try Avon ACB10's. (7x15 req)

aren't the acb10's a formula ford tyre? bet they're cheap

FF use 13" tyres not 15" but same kinda tyre.
  115. #115
The RS2's are a good upgrade over road tyres but are the bottom end of the track day tyre range.
  116. #116
Of course they are, the price reflects that.
  117. #117
My silverstone type RR have extremely hard side Walls, have not used them yet due to getting in oct and killed my damper but plan to get them out next year around April time!!

  141. #141
Better than you would think actually. Much quicker than him through surtees but had no chance on the straights. Still managed to hold him off for a few laps once i first saw him in the rear view mirror and still had him in sight for a few laps, so yes a G40 is going to demolish a saxo especially with a decent driver in it...but hey trackdays are for fun! I felt like i was going more than fast enough.

I have a video i will whack it up in the track videos soon..

Cool. Was just wondering since in terms of weight a stripped out sax can be about comparible with the 40, just with 30bhp less.
  144. #144
Why how much power do they have??
  145. #145
power to weight will be about similar with a few mods. but the g40 is a bespoke race car. so has perfect geometry setup, rwd, sequential gearbox, slicks, the works
  146. #146
Blimey i saw that and assumed it had about 400bhp! How much are they as it sounds cheaper to get a rallye or a sax..

If you were out looking for something like a Ginetta, a Rallye, or a Sax wouldn't really come into the equation.
  149. #149
That m3 is going easy isn't it

Thats what I thought, I think the M3's on its warm up lap.

150 in G40 trim. The G40.Jr is restricted to a bit less.

Depending when your track day was, it was probably running stock michelin road tyres.

c'mon, dont try and convince yourself a pretty standard saxo would give an m3 a run for it's money

    Exactly!

Just because you can keep up with an M3 doesn't mean a saxo is quicker than an M3, well imo anyway. Trackdays aren't about comparing yourself with other people. It looks like the driver of the M3 was taking it steady, he might feel like thats the limit he wants to take it too. Scared of crashing it? Its a lot more money to lose than a saxo!

I could say I've beat clio 200's and a fair few scoobies at both Oulton park and Anglesey but I know for a fact they would piss all over me if driven well. Its just I like giving mine a bit of grief whereas they obviously don't.
  155. #155
tbh it looks like a csl too so probably was being careful not to bin it into the barriers...

Here's my other car, its work in progress and hasn't been on the road yet since i bought it and got it MOT'd.

Its a VTS but i'm trying to make it look a bit bland for road use.

    Mods so far are...

    Engine
Wrapped Raceland 4-2-1 manifold/Magnex cat back exhaust (which i'm selling), shrouded ind kit with Green filter.

    Chopped bumper.

    Suspension
So far (tonight) i've only dont the rear end, 23mm bars, 24mm ARB & borrowed Proper Grp N tarmac Bilstein dampers.
I've fitted 15" steels & citroen C2/3 wheel trims for the furio look.

As funds allow it'll become a production class hillclimb/track day car but also still be a daily driver with quaife box/diff, cams & predator ecu, saxsport with m/s cat... not sure what to use suspension wise on the front... ast's are looking good atm.

The car is sporting fablon over the sunroof to try and stem the flow of water to the interior when it rains... a c/f panel will be getting fitted in the future.
  158. #158
    How much for the 4-2-1?
  159. #159
Its the cat back magnex i'm selling not the manifold.
  160. #160
Ah already have one i think as mine looks the same
  161. #161
The 106 is almost good to go, i got the dog box back from Gripper on Mon so i refitted it on Mon evening, i slapped in the 25mm t bars a while back but didn't bolt them in place until tonight... they may require some ride height fine tuning... just waiting for tyres and i'll order/fit an oil cooler kit b4 its ready for the track/the box breaks again. (delete as appropriate)

Rear end on axle stands awaiting tyres...

My new track car, got to use it as a daily too mind, is a mazda mx5.
It needs a little work but no rust at all on it

And the Momo wheel which was worn has been swapped for my OMP Corsica, its dished but isnt too bad. Although will have to see if I need a flat wheel once I have been on track with it.

Just outta curiosity, why have the fire extinguisher all the way at the back of the boot? Surely it makes more sense to have it within arms reach? I know I always have mine within arms reach, vital seconds that i'd rather not be wasting trying to get out the car to get the thing...
  213. #213
    id say the same titch
mine was in the passengers footwell on the tunnel in the 106

the fear of stuffing it into the tyres or blowing it up or some doucher clipping me. i never had a chance to get it on track and the 2 times i took it on the road the police seemed rather interested in it. the thing cost me a fortune, the engine alone was over 20 grand but it kept me busy

now i have a wife n kid im stuck playing with cheaper options
