Revs bouncing about.

    Alright everyone, first post.

I've got a saxo vtr and the revs have started bouncing around when I'm idling. I haven't had the car for long and I don't know much about car engines 'cause i'm used to working on bikes...

It jumps between about 750 - 1050 revs about once every second or so and I haven't a clue where to start looking

What I do know is that it has a k&n air filter and a straight through exhaust. Could either of these be the culprit?

    Cheers!

i know very little as well but i dough it has anything to do with them cus my vtr is doing the same and it is just standard but don't take my word for it.

hopefully i can find out this problem as well

Clean the ICV (idle control valve) to start with. Its free to do and doesn't take long It could also be your MAP sensor
Read this thread http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...t=cleaning+icv , it tell you how to clean the ICV

Just a heads up mate the last thing i checked was the spark plugs as i'd only just fitted some NGK Iridium plugs, and found out that the electrodes had completely melted! Teach me to buy from eBay! Replaced with some NGK R's and work fine, doesnt cost anything to check!

most probably the IdleControlValve mate, get it out and give it a clean, but this can mean there wont be a huge amount of life left in it

Wow, 5 posts just like that! I'll clean the ICV on sat and report back. Sort of reassuring that is could be something as small as that!

    Cheers!

ye my old vtr used to do that, not very often tho.

OK as i said i am in the same boat as him when you say that there might not be much life left is that if you take it out or that is just a sign that there is not much life left cu i have just bought my saxo and don't wont to start doing anything to it if it is just going to give up on me.????

    thanks

My mates vts was doing this and it was due to the air filter taking in to much air.......

No, not quite as bad as that

Took it for it's MOT today and it failed because they couldn't keep the revs steady enough to get an emissions test. Considering ripping out the K&N and putting the standard air-box back in as well I think! Oh the joy!

It won't be that, It'll most likely be the ICV gunked up. Clean that if you haven't already. You can run without an air filter and it'll run fine. But don't, for obvious reasons...

Ok I faffed about a bit, but my engine seems different to the guide and most other pics I can find.

Have I pointed to the ICV in this image?

Yep that's it, Also sounds like your map sensor, it's located to the left of the throttle body, same happend to my brothers vtr and by just touching the wires i managed to stall his car.

Also when was it last serviced?
