ABS Light/Sensor

  1. #1
The ABS light has stayed on since my gearbox was changed in the middle of last year. Finally got round to looking at it earlier.

The passenger side sensor is clean, no signs of damage.

Drivers side, the plastic casing is missing and gave it a good clean but the light still remains on.

Any other suggestions, wires all seem fine from what I can see?

get a multimeter and measure the resistance across them
  3. #3
will do this. what should it be?

Check the resistance of the sensors using this guide.

1000 - 1100 ohms is ok, anything less and the sensor has had it. Cleaning them doesn't really bring them back to life - I'm pretty sure they use magnets to sense when the wheel has locked, so once they're dead, you need to replace the sensor.

brilliant! it got knocked with a hammer iirc so that would have fucked the magnet, correct?

    bump this up.

couldnt get hold of a MM so just took a punt on it being the front n/s that was fucked. changed it but the light is still on. im guessing that one was fine or do i need to do anything else to make it go off? ive pretty much bent my wheel brace too, so i cant try the o/s one either now

mot is due tuesday, how much would they charge roughly to sort it?

changed both fonts now and managed to get a reading for all four sensors. as i suspected, its the drivers side front thats not working. even with a new sensor, theres nothing going to it.

im out of time now so going to let the garage deal with it

So all four sensor are reading resistance but the light is still on?

If you've renewed a sensor and they all read resistance, you'll need to drive a mile or so before the light goes out.

ah, i mis-typed that, sorry! theres NO reading from the front drivers side, even with a brand new sensor. The other corners are all fine.

Hmm, that's odd. I'd unplug the sensor and check the resistance directly across it. If it's reading resistance, your problem could be with the ABS wiring loom.

if thats the case i dont wanna do that! i cursed more times than necessary today

or is it not that hard to change?

so yeah, failed mot today, abs being the main thing.

lee, by 'I'd unplug the sensor and check the resistance directly across it', do you mean the two inner pins on the blue multiplug, just above the driveshaft?

also, is there a wiring diagram anywhere? found this but i cant see abs anywhere.

Aye, unplug the new sensor you've fitted and measure its resistance by putting the multimeter pins into the connector.

If it reads ~1100 ohms, but you get 0 resistance when its connected to the car (checking it using the big connector behind the battery), it sounds like the ABS wiring could be at fault.

    as above
if the sensor reads right when unplugged then will be wiring at fault or the abs module!

You could possible blank the light off as one option
    or

try this to see if it is the wiring?

    good luck

really cant see brand new sensor being faulty but ill check it anyway.

blanking is another option but id rather have a fully working car.

edit, i cant do anything until saturday. would need to know what wires etc id need, ill just order them
