I Quite Like That

Thought i'd try this, something they run on another forum.

Add a picture that you have taken and thought 'i like that'. Can be a photo of anything, edited or un-edited.

Basically something that doesn't deserve a thread or anything but you're fond of it.

    I'll go first:

Nothing special I love the reflections:

    one from this year....

Moving my style to more high iso using ambient where possible and making use of the iso performance i have from the mkIII. Was with the new 24-70 L which i love so far.

Ryan, such incredible clarity and IQ from such poor conditions for shooting.

Absolutely hated doing nightclub work haha

TBH ive been very very much impressed with the mkiii at 3200, heck even 6400 ive had some useable images. (it helps that the CDJ 2000s do actually bang out quite alot of light when the artist is in close).

Club work can be a pain in the arse. Im lucky that my clients book me for my artist and crowd shots to show atmosphere and emotion, so i dont have to spend much time with the people on the floor all wanting their photos lol

Mind you i still get pisse off with the lighting techies obsession with the fucking smoke machine
  7. #7
When I was flicking though i found two photos, i quite liked that had not been posted (well i don't think they where posted)

Taken at Oulton Park during the BTCC weekend.

Not the best photo Ive ever taken but i liked it, taken in a disused warehouse in Chester.

This one could have done with a slightly longer exposure IMO, but I love the composition:

Would have been better if thewhite balance was changed so it doesnt look so orange

yeah either play witht he WB on camera (some have different settings for tungsten lighting etc...) or adjust it in post production.
  15. #15
I don't do any playing with the images after they're off the camera, I know I should, but most of the time I cba (plus I don't have any software), so they come off the camera, and that's it. Will have a play with the white balance next time though.

free stuff try something like picasa (free from google) not the best but better than nout. Else its Lightroom which i prefer but needs a licence. Photoshop I disllike alot
  17. #17
GIMP, what's that like? Have heard good things about it. Have been getting tempted to try that.
  18. #18
never used it have no need with what i already have for my workflow

if its free give it a try.

Yeah your white balance is out, when shooting in areas with a warm biast lighting they come out horribly orange under long exposure, adjust and they will come out better.. or just do it on gimp, but beware you do get grain when you do.

GIMP is epic, and theres also Paint.net.. both free, both like photoshop (in ways) but gimp is more advanced.

Picasa is less like photoshop and more a beginners auto effect tool, just the basic changes and enhancments, nothing special.
  22. #22

Didnt even conciously put the light above in this picture.. but is so obsessantly even.. i love it D:

Have downloaded GIMP, and been having a play around with it. ATM, my pics that i've played around with look quite artificial, so, i'll keep playing around, and see if I can work it to my favour.

I actually rate the program, its set out very similar to LR. The sliders are good and you can do a hell of alot. Its a good one to use if you dont need to polish a turd but need a subtle tweek

Its like that one i used.. i think its LR.. Not so much a manipulation software, but more a tweaking software.

whereas in photoshop/gimp/paint.net you can manipulate and "polish turds" so to say.

Lightroom is doesnt have all the layers options, doging and burning cloning etc.. However should be more than enough for most who dont cock up/need to do graphic design work. Picasa still is used for a large amount of my work due to the simplicity of use, and the speed at which i can get through a days work and export easily

What ISO did you shoot that with Ryan?It looks clean.

    Steve.
  42. #42
6400. Its not that clean but meh fuck it.. Quite like the look of some grain atm.

May try it out through some NR software though when i get a chance to see what i can do, as ive had to push the highlights a touch and pull the blacks back so its introduced more noise.

Yes I know more DJ Shizzle, but then its a large percentage of what I do.

That's Pouch's Teg isn't it? Which is sadly no longer around. I never got to see it with the BBS' on.

    Buzzer's EK in the background.
  157. #157
Dunno, although my mate did mention one around Mansfield that made me think of that one, so mebbe, I know whoever's it is, it's always getting the attention. That pic was at Japfest. Thought the EK was Loony's (from Civiclife), though, could be wrong.
  158. #158
Ah, i might be wrong about the EK then. Buzzer sold his BBS' to Pouch, i was gathering the rim's on that EK was just something Buzzer had whacked on for the show.

However, now i look closer the Teg's BBS' aren't wide enough. I think it's just pure coincidence that the 2 car's are very similar to 2 local car's around here haha.

Although you can see it from virtually anywhere in manchester, when youre on deansgate it doesn't really look out of place.

1Dmkiii at 6400 is reasonably competent.

New bodies though blow it away (look into the iso noise on the new crop of canon/nikon sensors)

Noise shows up worse in the badly lit areas -look at the faces of the crowd who needed to be underexposed

Struggling for inspiration with DJs headshots atm, all want a similar look which is a bit bland...

I kinda like this in its raw form atm..

Quite liked this one i got from my 500d

Was at around 3/4 track so car was doing just under 300mph, i was stood all the way up on the top of the grass mound, not bad i thought for a standard 18-55mm lens

And another i thought turned out "ok" too

Nothing special I know, but one of my images was used in an advert for an international skating magazine, so i guess i'm allowed to be a little smug about it

also, ry, second shot at carl cox is wicked! shame about the smoke clouding it up

Never really been a fan of light trails, guess its because every noob as soon as they get a camera posts 500 photos from ontop of a motorway so I've seen it so many times.

If you are doing more painting with light stuff chip you may have fun putting different gels on the flash.

Tbh dude i haven't been out with the camera much lately. But it's something i intend to experiment with. I'll have to try that out with the gels

I agree on the motorway scene though. It isn't the most inventive way to do them...

Sweet shot ry! whats it for? any brand advert or something like that.

I headed down to summer league last night, our team wasn't playing, so I managed to get a couple of shots of a few mates playing. I'm going to shoot a couple more games when off the court and put the photos up in one go, but for now - here is a couple of them:

I also got a shot in of the teams warming up in one of the other games last night using the fisheye:

I'd done a little reading up on tips etc for shooting, but it's the first time i've done anything like this! luckily the lights in our sports hall (where all summer league games are played) are pretty good, so I was able to shoot at ISO 400 / 800 with a fairly quick shutter speed at still be around F2.8 - F4

Still tonnes of room for improvement, but for my first attempt at a sporting event, i'm pretty happy.

Another shot from a day with Kellie a few months back, trying a different edit inline with a style she wanted, heavy contrast + lots of desaturation going on.

Not quite there yet, this shoot is one of the big reasons I now have a tripod, im very anal when it comes to verticle/horizontal lines in shots, being a big guy and shooting handheld I have a tendancy to shoot downwards a touch and thus fucking up the verticles due to distortion/angles.

Spent a fair while looking at this shot.. Tried various different edits with colour before accidently creating something in B+W which immediately popped out how we wanted.

    1950/60s hollywood feel.

    Shot on the 1DX and 50 1.2

Not sure I like that portrait as much as your other stuff Mr. D

It was one of the natural light shots from the day, did other stuff in a cinema

Yeah I really wanted a much softer feel with this, so it went through about 6 different edits, warmer colours, colder colours, accidently put it into B+W and felt worked so tweaked again from there.

    WIP.

I prefer that one in the cinema.

Out of interest, who is it? someone to do with music?
  421. #421
Its a singer, just launching his solo stuff after being in a band.

The shoot was over a few locations, the cinema stuff was for the album cover. The other shots were for a softer feel for social media and some press releases.

Need to give people a range of shot for the package now with social media.

Play around with shutter speeds, long exposure (2nd pic down), macro mode etc. Search up on them on YouTube and you get loaaaaads of info.

    What lighting did you use?

the lighting seems pretty uneven. on the white car, the back is very dark compared to the front, and dissapears into the black too much.

The back of the orange car is also pretty dark too, and the front too harsh.

lighting the back as well as the front would certainly even it up / create for a more pleasing image - IMO. Lighting with off camera lighting, and standing your lights further back would probably also help to avoid the light only being in a concentrated area.

Those images all look a little under-exposed, Sam. I'm guessing that's due to the sun being blocked / down.
