Knocking noise but no play

  1. #1
    Hello!

Ok so I have a knocking noise when driving (worse when going over bumps) and it looks like I have slight camber on both wheels.

    Rear axle fubared I thought....

However, I jacked the car up and couldn't find any play in the rear axle on either side.
I tried to wobble the wheel left and right and front and back but it was stiff, no movement.

It only moved up and down with the arm itself

The arb plates seem to be ok (see below) I think?
    Bushes are all fine

Either im being a dick and not checking for play properly or something else is wrong?

This was taken after I jacked up both sides and put it down again, for some reason makes the camber look worse.

The wheels are not rubbing against the arch, there is about 1.5cm clearance both sides between the tyre and the inner arch

    Could fubared shocks cause this?

    Help!!

Shocks or barrings possibly, not sure if the barrings had gone there would be play in the axle?

Personally dont think the cambers bad, all cars carry a small amount of camber, its probably just the arb plate moving even if the bolt looks tight trust me it still makes the pinging noise.

Yeah I heard about the pinging noise but its more of a knocking.

Imagine there were planks of wood in the back and you drove over a bumpy road, thats what it sounds like

The rear end is tight, it never seems to kick out when going round corners etc

The camber in the pic above looked worse after jacking the car up and down for some reason lol

I have never felt play before but assumed it would be fairly obvious if there was any?
I really couldn't move the wheel in any direction except up and down with the arm itself

    Will do mate

I removed my exhaust on Sunday and refitted it properly so it no longer hits the torsion bar but the noise is still there

The rear axle has no play, the bushes are fine, the rear arb plate is secure and the exhaust is not knocking

Im thinking damper next as the noise only seems to be on the passenger side

Are the blots that secure the axle to the car tight?

I tightened my ARB today and that seemed to sort it out. there is a guide on here that is dead easy to follow! have a crack and see if that works for you!!

The ARB end plate looks secure

When you say tightened the ARB, is that not the end plate?

    Cheers

no tightening the arb itself is using a bolt to pull it on the plate properly

And this will just be the 13mm ( i think) bolt holding the plate on at the flat end has come a touch loose. tighten it up and your laughing!

on the first picture is it the bolt on the right side of the pic?

My money would be on loose ARB.

The camber on that is fine IMO.

Yeah that will sort your problem. Rumour has it they came with loctite on when the rolled outta the factory so probably a good idea to bang some on!
