VTR not accelerating right, new clutch?

   Hi
   
   Hoping someone can help me!
   
   I bought a VTR recently, 51 plate, 68k mileage and the lad who I got it off said he recently changed the gearbox but nothing else.
   
   I took it to dual carriage way to open her up and as soon as I get to about 40mph and then put my foot down on the accelerator wether in 5th gear or drop to a lower gearer to get some more power the car just revs really high and I just stay at 40mph and then the revs drop straight back to were it was and the car speed SLOWLY climbs.
   
   It seems to be ok when driving it calmly on 30mph roads and only starts with the problem when I am tryiing to drive her faster.
   
   The lad who sold it me reckons he has never noticed!
   My cousin said it sounds like my clutch is slipping, does anyone agree with this? and does this mean i need a new clutch? or could it have been something he has done when fitting the new gearbox
   PLEASE HELP!!!!

   Cheers for the fast response mate.
   I wasnt sure if maybe the lad I got it off had maybe messed up when installing the new gearbox as I have heard oil can get onto a clutch and cause it to leak?? I aint that mechanically when it comes to clutched/gearboxes.
   
   any brands you would recommend? I have seen a Valeo one for £100 in vat but also seen a QH one for less then £70

   Most people recommend Valeo.

   if i have the clutch already do you know what price i should be roughly looking at for fitting? just so i dont get ripped off

   Oil would be visable from looking around the gearbox from the engine bay. Its not that likley to be the cause really, unless you have a very bad leak. Check the gearbox has the small plate underneath the car on the block side of the gearbox, as these are often missing.
   
   Valeo, Borg&Beck, Luk are the brands to stick to. Dont spend any less than £95 on a clutch kit and you will be fine.
   
   £110 for labour of fitting a clutch, sometimes extra for gearbox oil, sometimes gearbox oil is included.

   Valeo it is then, when I searched the net these seem to be the most favourable.
   managed to find one for £100 inc vat which is cheaper then some people have said they are.
   If I book it into a garage then the mechanic would be able to see any probs with the grearbox when fitting the clutch wouldnt he?
   Appreciate your help.
   The lad who i got car off reckons he never knew about the clutch which I find hard to believe!!! he seems to be ignoring my calls now aswell so looks like I am gona have to fork out for it myself :o(

   When the gearbox is off ask the mechanic to check the input shaft for play. This can give the same symptoms but its very very unlikley.

    if it is the input shaft (soz if i sound like a idiot but the most technical stuff I can do on cars is change the brake pads & discs lol) then is this an expensive job? and would the clutch still need changing?

    I very much doubt it is the input shaft. If not then a new gearbox or have the bearing replaced.
    
    Clutch should always be changed when the gearbox is off (if it isnt new anyway) as it would be the same amount of labour to change the clutch should it fail a few weeks later.

    well I wudda thought that too but the back story was you see that when i first looked at the car before buying it, it was making a grinding type of noise in the 1st and 2nd gears and the lad said it needed the clutch re-spraining and he was going to do it before selling me the car and then a day later he rang to tell me that it was actually a new gearbox that was needed and that he was gona replace the gearbox and it would be ready by the weekend.
    The weekend came and i took the car around the block for a test drive (I was just driving it calmly and sticking to 30mph hence why I didnt notice clutch slipping then) and the sound was gone and I took his word that he had fitted a new gearbox, so I bought the car.
    Now I am having doubts as to wether he actually fitted a new gearbox, he said it cost him £170 and took him over an hr.

    Quite brave of him to lie about having a new gearbox fitted. Maybe if he did have the gearbox fitted its cured that problem, but the clutch problem was another separate problem which still remains.
    
    Beginning to sound similar to this thread, but dont jump to concluding that it is definatly the gearbox and not just the clutch which it still could be

    Just read that other thread, there is definitely no noise at the moment when driving the car (no unsual noise anyway) and the noise that it orignally had before I bought it was a very loud distinct grinding noise.
    One thing I forgot to mention is that the clutch pedal is really high to compared to the other two pedals and the bite point is quite high

    That, along with clutch slipping means your clutch is dying for a change. I would get them changed ASAP before you find yourself stranded..

    If I buy the Valeo clutch kit and get a garage to fit it do i need to buy anything else or just the clutch kit?

    clutch kit is all thats needed but if it were me i would renew the gearbox oil and probably driveshaft oil seals.
