VTS conversion, finaly found one i think :S

Found a VTS engine with 40k on the clock to replace my VTR. Main reason is due to this sodding misfire....makes life easier . he states it 'comes as a complete engine, with wiring loom, ecu, chip key & transponder, water pipes, mount, air box, all ancillarys etc' and he has the gearbox aswell, but i suppose i may aswell just use the vtr one .

Anything else id need other than a VTS manifold (i assume i need a VTS manifold....) and possible VTS radiator? Also, will it pass MOT ok? or will the emissions be off or something silly?

    Cheers

you mite aswell get the gearbox aswell if its on 40k and you getting it cheap
you could just sell it on and make some money back
  3. #3
The gear box is a seperate item to be fair, il see how much it goes for at the time (auction im afraid) But if it goes for say, 50 quid id probs buy it. But then again...I dont need it as mine seems pretty fine atm . Id have to take it off anyways so id get myself a clutch kit.

Get the box, the vtr box will dull the performance of the vts the ratios are too long.

Assuming youve mached the looms it will be plug and play. Vts rad is better but itll run on the vtr fine
  5. #5
Well its an 02 car same as mine, which is why this ones perfect .

The VTR box would make for better performance....well better acceleration. as the ratios are shorter

Anyone know of about the manifold etc?
  6. #6
    Exhaust manifold*
  7. #7
Ooo just looking at a few threads and i will deffinately need a manifold, and the centre section as thats where the cat is . Whereas its in the manifold in my VTR.

No, the vtr box has one of the longest ratios along with the diesel box. Its pants!

Just had a search, maybe i was wrong ha! swear i read it different somwhere on the forums. I suppose id get better motorway fuel economy from the vtr box however, worse urban .

if youve got an 02 vtr your radiator is probably the same as a vts one anyway. you'll need a vts exhaust and im another one who'll recomend you get the vts box as well
  11. #11
Well il try for the vts box from the same guy then Probably looking at a 400 quid max spend on this engine? Not sure on its vale realy but it looks all there! Except the exhaust manifold. What from my vtr can i keep when it comes to the exhaust, just the back box? Litteraly bought a new exhaust the other day as mine fell off oh well...wasted 40 quid!

will be faster with the vts box. if your after fuel economy then the vtr box will be better (although you mayaswell get a vtr engine if your after fuel economy)

vts radiator is bigger. ive heard it may overheat with vtr radiator on a vts engine. you need the vts top hose for the radiator i think. you only need the manifold & possibly down pipe. from the centre pipe backwards its all the same

are you sure you have a matching plug ecu car for the engine you are about to buy?

Yeh i heard they run hot too. thinking of it its a stupid question, i need the centre section aswell to get the CAT. otherwise i wont pass mot.

The ECU comes with the engine im hopefully buying, he also says it has the chip key and transponder...so i take it i can swap the chip from my car key and then swap the transponder in the passenger side dash? Will this be ok with central locking too?

as lee sais, the 3 plug vtr radiator is the same as the vts radiator, only single plugs havethe shorter shitter rad

and with ryan and other the vts box is the one to have, youd be better off buying/fitting the s box and selling the R box

ooo realy? Well theres some cash saved . i plan on breaking the engine i have, due to it having the mis fire. Wreckon id get alot for the head, bottom end etc?

be better off advertising it as a whole for £100 or so with loom and ecu et
  17. #17
vtr engines dont sell for much at all these days

wack it on ebay and see what it gets
  18. #18
i bought a fully working vtr engine with loom ecu key and barrel and clocks for £130 delivered to my door step
  19. #19
Hmm....at least scrapage price for aly has gone up....
  20. #20
vtr engine has about £8 worth of ally on it, £10 worth of cast, and a few £ scrap if your lucky
  21. #21
    Was joking about the scrap

Realy confused about this exhaust, seen a few conflicting posts so had a quick search on ebay for a VTS Cat. Some are underfloor cats which is what alot of posts suggested, however they only seem up until 2001. whereas cats like these (IE just like the one i fitted to my VTR a month ago) are stated as being for 2000-2004 VTRs AND VTS. Anyone in the know want to shed a little light for me?
  22. #22
I would keep the old VTR engine and bits then you always have the option of returning it to original when you come to sell it and sell the VTS bits on separately.
  23. #23
Reason im changing it is because the old VTR Engine is leaking oil (Been in a garage 5 times to fix) and has a misfire across 3 cylinders (Done a couple of the usual to fix, others have the same problem without a fix and told the mechanics to chase the fault when it was in for its mot as i was fed up....bit of cash later and no fix). So thats why id wanna strip it for parts!

what youre going to need is a late model cat and centre section, you need the late cat which will have a hole for a second lambda, its a little longer than the early cat and the late centre section is a little shorter than the early one

This is the sort of info/confirmation i was after . So all VTS CATS are under-floor then. Shame, my new back box and centre section arrived today...oh well, 40 quid wasted on the centre
  26. #26
do not put a vtr gearbox on it, its worse than the vts one mate
  27. #27
yep, ALL cats are underneath on the vts. 3 plugs have the longer cat, single plugs have shorter cat as they only have 1 lambda
  28. #28
what you can do is use youre full length vtr centre section to decat the car, give it a little bit more power and save shelling out for a vts cat and centre immediately

Cheers for all the help guys . Il be back if i get it...and come to try and fit it . So far the biddings just gone above 300. Not sure how much more it will go but i was probably thinking 400 ish quid for it....but then it appears that might not be enough ha! Im not sure on the value realy, still gotta get cam belt and clutch kit to make a decent job.
