Just bought my Mk1 vtr, i was wondering if you could tell me all the modifications i could do to get as much power out of it as possible, without turbo'ing or supercharging. Thank you! (Y)

#5How much have you got to spend?
-
#6I dont want to spend stupid amounts of money, but we'll see how much each thing will cost
-
#7i honestly wouldnt bother, i got a vts engine for near enough the same cost as a vtr cam. then with a cam you need an exhaust, filter, and remap. lots of money when you could just put the 16v in and get the same amount of power straight out.
what id do is enjoy the car for now, spend money on handling and braking and make the car fun. then if you still want power stick a 16v in, it just seemed a waste to me to spend money on the 8v and even more so if youre chasing n/a power -
#8I agree with like all of the above, but it does make sense to go for a vts engine then put money into that..plus the 16v has a really nice note to it

#9Maybe he can't afford to insure it with the vts conversion lol
Maybe just start with breathing mods mate something like the raceland enclosed with a green filter and then maybe a supersprint exhaust system and 4-2-1 manifold .
Will give a few horses and should sound pretty nice -
#10we'll if we're being legit, if vts insurance is out of reach then a vtr with those mods will probably be a similar priceQuote:Maybe he can't afford to insure it with the vts conversion lol

#11Not likely
My ax with vts conversion third party fire and theft was £800 ish to insure last year
Ax with vtr and turbo conversion, an extra years Ncb and now fully comp - £600 -
#12Fire and theft/fully comp makes no difference. Fire and theft is 40 quid more expensive for me.Quote:Not likely

What power gains were you looking at with the turbo? 10%? did you state that percentage gains? What percent decrease did you get for the first years NCB? Can be anywhere from 5-15% decrease....how many years experience did you have on each car?
List is endless to be honest but just putting a little point accross
.

#13That's fine, the vts was declared at 120 atw with the various mods, vtr declared at 180 atw to allow myself plenty of wiggle room. I was quoted less for third party fire and theft on the vtr but paid extra for fully comp. Ncb was 10%
With the difference in insurance grouping between vtr and vts, an engine conversion is going to attract a bit more attention than a few engine mods -
#14Fit a Rallye engine.
Ive got one for sale, and it looks the exact same as a VTR engine
-
#15strip it out
breathing mods
266mm brake upgrade
gmc suspension set up
poly bush and enjoy the car for what it is
