which cam for vtr

  1. #1
im trying to work out which is the best cam for my single plug vtr and i can't decide so just wondered what you lot would recommend.

what i want from the cam is obvs the power but i don't want it too wild, i want it to be able to idle on its own and be decent on fuel with just normal driving

best i can see is a newman phase 1 and 2 but any other suggestions are very welcome

    cheers

Hi, you can get three stages of cam. Fast road, ultimate road or race cams. By the sound of it, I think you'll be best of getting fast road cams which I think piper do which will add a bit of power and aren't too expensive. They should also run without a remap but would recommend remaping if your after decent fuel economy.

cheers mate i'll deff be getting it mapped, so i can make sure the cars set up right so i know the cars happy and get the most out of the cam

the reason for me looking at the newman phase 2 (s2 106 rallye) is i thought it would give more power then the phase 1 but be better on fuel then the phase 3 and be able to idle on its own

Yeah I think if you want a real noticeable difference, you will have to go for a phase 2. Phase 3 will probably drink fuel and will require immediate remapping where as phase 2 will be a bit more fuel efficient and will get you from a to b without a remap but might not run right. Would also recommend looking at Kent cams as ive heard there quite good but they might be a bit pricey.

Or just get an XSi cam, its the same as 270 I have been told

Newmans ph2 won't fit, neither will th xsi or Rallye cams. They are big bearing cams so won't physically fit. Plus the ph2 is the same as ph3 anyway

Alot of people say there's no point fitting a mild cam because you won't gain much
But I'm essence you will pay £300 upwards for a remap with say a ph3 to make an extra 10bhp max over a mild cam
A mild can you can pick up very cheap 2nd hand these days
I've seen them go for about £100, so for the 10bhp you may gain I think it's more beneficial plus easier to fit since it runs on standard timing.

But, you still need to spend alot to fit a cam to 8v cause of having to remove the head, so here's where you will be getting answers like Just do a 16v conversion it costs less etc

But you can change a cam on an 8v without having to remove the head

Also if people are worried about fuel economy when camming motor, then why are you bothering? Either way it's not goin to improve the fuel, it will more likely make it worse. Depends on how well it's been mapped. But still if your camming a car you can't pick a cam down to which you will still get better mpg with

Just curious, have you done it?

I was thinking about doing it my self, as it should only require that you make some kind of brace that will hold all the valves down while you take out the cam. Or am i wrong?

I havnt done it myself, I was going to

But the route I took required a different head which meant I had to pull it apart anyway plus the mileage covered.

But it's quite simple. You still need to remove all cambelt etc rocker cover etc, so it is still advised to buy the usual replacement parts I.e cambelt kit, water pump, etc etc

This just means you don't have to buy head gasket and get head cleaned skimmed etc that's nearly 100pound saving there tbh. Plus it's not a necessity the water pump is changed, it's adviced to an people will recommend it since your there.

But all you do is remove the usual cambelt rocker cover, cam pulley etc, then remove the rockers them selves. You need to undo batt side mount (obv supporting the engine with jack) then slacken Ecu side mount, undo lower mount and then tilt the engine you should be able to slide the cam out and new one back in then put back together job done

i dont expect good mpg but i dont want to be drinking fuel like im ragging it when im just popping to the shops and back, i know im gonna use more then now.

so you recommend a mild cam with map to suit to get the best out of it?

dan mate do you have a silvertop VTR or a blacktop one mate? as I have a nice kent cam going cheap if its a blacktop
  12. #12
With mild cam you won't need a remap, it'll run fine without one. If you want a remap go for the ph3 cam. But as said for the extra you spend I can see it being worth it.

its a silver top single plug mate, id be buying new so from kamracing its 188 so not too bad, i know id need a venier pulley and map with that but is there anything else?

    so far i've got:
    phase 3 cam
    venier pulley
    remap
    timing belt kit

    anything else im missing?

cheers for all the advice lads

Where are you getting it done.... Will it be mapped by the engineers doing the cam? If I were you I would speak to John at gmc. I've always asked for his thoughts on things before I got ahead and my mechanic is a senior Peugeot technician who has done rally cross etc for peugeot. Always best to seek advice.

super charger job done. IMO... That's ticks all the boxes does it not..... Cost? Well what your doing will all mount up anyway.... I spent thousands on mine..... Wish I done it all in one.... Hindsight a wonderful thing.....
