Schrick 272 Cam on VTR?

  1. #1
    Hi,
    I have a 90hp vtr mk2 with roller rockers...

I have just been offered a shrick camshaft cheap. But i cant really find out much about it. I have been told that it will run on standard injection without remap.
But how wild is this cam? Will it run well?

I use my car for everyday driving both town and freeway.

    My current setup is:
    Raceland 4-2-1
    400 cell sport cat
    Magnex Cat back system

Before i fit the cam i will put a 1,3 rally inlet on with a CDA BMC airfilter.

    Regards

Not sure what lift the 272 Shrick has, but I had a 266 degree Kent cam in my VTR with no remap. Was very mild, so much so, the engine didn't really run any different. Quite a few people run the 270 degree Newman PH3, and they say similar things.

272 should be fine imo. Fit it and see how you get on.

If you plan to get it remapped/ raise the rev limit, then I'd definitely go for some uprated valve springs.

    Thx for the reply....

So would you say it would maby be too mild? Could go wilder without remap and standard injection? Or would that compromise everyday driving?

For the effort and cost of swapping the camshaft, I was disappointed with the 266 Kent cam. The 270 degree Newman PH3 makes slightly more power (pretty sure a car on this forum made 122bhp ATF after timing adjustment on rolling road, no remap), but I'd personally want to go wilder still.

Do Shrick market any other camshafts?

If you haven't already, I'd definitely look into swapping to a gearbox with the sports cluster - VTS/ S2 Rallye/ 1.6 XSI would be my choice. I didn't, and think I would have noticed a more pronounced difference after fitting the Kent cam if I had.

Ok, i think i am going to try the 272 shrick with adjustable cam pulley. I dont want it to be too wild, as i still want it to be drivable for every day use.

I cant really find out if they do, i cant even find the 272 for roller rockers on their website.

I have considered another gearbox, but how will it be for every day use? And how will the fith gear be? I dont want to get a lower ratio for freeway driving...

Might be worth e-mailing them to see if they do/ did make a 272 for the roller rocker engine.

As for the gearbox, here's a VTS gearbox on a VTR (speeds in MPH). Looks to be ~500 RPM more when cruising in 5th compared to the VTR gearbox?

Yeah i think i will do that....
Thx for the link i will check it out...

How do i time the camshaft up on the pulley? Can you do it your self or will i have to get it timed by someone with a rolling road?

If it was me, I'd lock the flywheel so cylinder 1 is at TDC, and fit the Shrick cam into the head with your standard camshaft pulley attached. Lock the camshaft pulley off using the locking hole, then carefully remove the standard pulley and replace with your adjustable one. At this point, it's probably a good idea to make some markings so you know where TDC is in future, or you accidentally rotate the cam when fitting the belt etc.

With the Shrick cam at standard timing, there's nothing stopping you having it adjusted it on a rolling road. Before I had mine adjusted on the rolling road, a friend of mine adjusted the timing so the lift at TDC matched what was specified on the cam's spec sheet. That way, we knew it was somewhere close before any adjustment was made on the rollers. If you go down this route, I'd probably leave it to someone who's done it before and has the dial gauages etc. I can't remember exactly how it's done.
