Jp4 rocker cover fitment problem

  1. #1
I've fitted a set of jp4 rocker covers today

Before fitment, I made sure the covers were clean around the seal, I also fitted 2 brand new seals from Citroen
I then made sure the can ladders were spotless and smooth
Then when fitting I tightened up all the bolts bit by bit so it was as even as possible.

Started the car and a tiny bit of oil seeped out near a couple of bolts, rockers back off again double checked the seals were sitting right and clean put back together except this time didn't do the bolts up as tight in case I had over tightened before and made the seal sit funny.

This time round no leaks to start with, went for about a 3mile drive come back and it's absolutely pissed oil out of the rockers on the gearbox side on both exhaust and inlet covers.

Now, I'm not exactly sure what method/step to take next, i was thinking of using some sealant (stuff I got from Citroen, for cam ladders) along with the seals?
But Im sure most people I've seen fit these havent had to use sealer have they?

Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem and how they've solved it, or if anyone had any advice to give? Before I just use sealer along with the normal rubber seals.

sure the bolts arent too long.. ive heard some ppl have issues with this,as the bolts are tightenining into the bottom of the boss....but arent clamping the covers down as theyre slightly too long

Hmm never thought of that one, will have to check them tomorrow
Pretty sure they're the same length as the bolts I took off with the j4 rockers.
Also of the top of my head, I always thought that it wouldnt matter with the length of the bolts as the tabs they screw into werent blocked at the bottom they had holes so the bolt would just continue to keep going regardless of length?

Will double check that Tomorrow though, they seemed to do up tight enough before hand though tbh.

i dont know mate, possibley, i just read a thread a while back on moaners which outlined this, so it may just have been a tard posting up, but pretty sure there was more then one person who aggreed they were having a similar prob

I used a bit of sealant on mine to make sure they didn't leak and so I didn't have to mess about with them

when I did this on my cherry gti sealed everything first time round no leaks. But I did use jp4 bolts the lot

The majority of the bolts are the same no matter which 16v cam covers are usd.
Its the coil pack cover bolts which are a different size.

    Thanks for your opinions guys
Think I'll just get some sealant on them then

I think they are actually your old ticket covers Ross and I did spot a bit of sealant on there

Good to see my parts still in action!!

I used some Halfords premium stuff which was a very dark green and it seemed spot on - only need a 1mm bead, if that tbh.

Ahh ok, I actually got my sealant from Citroen, it was stupidly priced. But benefit for me is a good friend works for Citroen, I won't reveal how much I paid lol either way it was insanely cheaper than how much I coil pay for sealant from the motorfactor I work for.

It's brilliant stuff too, used it with the can ladders and had no probs what so ever with them, just the cam covers.

When you used the sealant I'm assuming you left the original seal in place too?

Yeh definitely leave the oem seal in! I only used the sealant to take up any imperfections really.

Jobs a good'un - will have a look at the wideband one evening this week

Ok awesome, I think I'll just run a fine bead all around tbh just to be safe, I've got awful luck lol and if I did any imperfections it'll only leak some where else on the covers.

Oh yer that's ace thanks Ross, forgot about that till yesterday. My car keeps stalling with the cams in I need to sort out the map sooner rather than later lol

No worries - will try and look at it ASAP for you!

    Ok thanks Ross

The idle is actually surprisingly good for the cams that are in, it's no different to before they went in. Driving wise not sure yet as the oil leak stopped me driving but the junctions I got to it just stalled.

Right cam covers back on with sealant, going to give it half hour to seal, although it's practically dry already. I've got couple of other bits to sort first.
    Will update in half hour

    Right good news fellas

    Leak has been defeated

Put some sealant on the covers, may have put a but more on than you'd want. But as they say better to have too much than too little lol
I put some in the grooves on the rockers then put the rubber seals on then bit more sealant on top of them

So it was just the typical shitty seals from Citroen/Peugeot, nothing new I spose.

Good work, glad they're oil tight now!
