4-2-1 and decat sealing

  1. #1
Right i'm running a 4-2-1 manifold as pictured below, with what I think is a supersprint decat pipe. I cant seem to get the manifold to decat join to seal properly - the wire gasket seems OK but even with the bolts fully tightened up it blows like a bugger. The manifold opening has a flared edge but just seems slightly too small to accept the wiregasket.

    Ive the bolts as such:

    Bolt through manifold flange
    spring
bolt keeps going through decat flange
    cup washer
    nut

Anyone got any advice as to why this may be?

force the wire gasket to fit?

or smuther the joint in exhaust paste?

ive got some paste on my centre to back box join as it was blowing and it just wouldnt clamp tight enough with the gasket, seems to do the trick, been on for about 6 months now and still no blowing

It wont tighten down enough for a "force fit" so to speak

i think its the wrong clamp for the joint tbh mate.

the old one snapped and i found this one, but when we swap the exhaust you can keep your clamp and ill keep my shit one, its made of really soft metal and im so strong it fucked the thread when i was tightening it so used some paste to stop it blowing haha.

the exhaust fits fine mate, honest aha, and i will take some pictures tomorrow night if its not pissing down bud

i dont have a gasket or paste on mine, gasket wouldnt fit at all but the two pipes fit perfectly together :$

i had similar problem when i put my cat converter back on after using a decat pipe, what i do is put some washers on the bolts and it seems to get it tighter, cant remember what side of the bolt but make sure the washers are big enough to feed down past the thread and the smooth bit right up to the head of the bolt, im using a few washers and its worked a treat.

I'll have a look at it tomorrow, rain stopped play today and I couldnt be arsed moving the 182 out of the garage. Also one of the springs that goes against the bolts is coilbound...no problem though I've just nicked one from the 182s exhaust mount as thats was I was using to achieve a nice straight exhaust! I love free fixes

I cant use larger bolts with my manifold though, its got tiny holes
Also should I fit the cat instead? Not sure my MOT will pass it plus my cat has "NOT FOR ROAD USE" emblazoned on the side so if I ever get pulled I'm fucked?

there are different sized wire gaskets that are dependent on the centre section.

50mm is standard? slightly larger for supersprint. Check kamracing.co.uk for the correct fitting.

I wouldn't worry about fitting a cat for mot... I took mine in for it's mot recently and it passed fine.

With regards to washers mentioned above, i put 2 on each bolt. If when you tighten the 'cup' down to meet the spring, if the spring still rattles and the 'cup' is at the bottom of the thread then it's never going to tighten. Therefore put a couple of washers on before the spring. So poke the bolt through, a couple of washers, spring, cup and finally nut - In that order.

    hope that helps.

I got a cat fitting kit from citroen the otherday £12 and the gasket is ceramic

much better than any otf the wire ones ive had in the past

Had to cut the springs too
