Intercooler advise?

Hey guys, Buying a turbo with manifold ectand all I need now is the cooler and boost pipes? I will be running roughly 10psi. Any way what would be the ideal intercooler I am looking for?

ps I did try a search but I couldn't find anything of use
  2. #2
really depends how you want to fit it. Some use a cupra intercooler, some fit in a R5GTT cooler. Or a universal intercooler from ebay.

I'd recommend something smaller if you're plans for boost remain below about 1 bar on a smallish turbo.

Something like this would be ideal :
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FRONT-MOUN...#ht_663wt_1163

The easiest thing to do is buy 2.25" alloy pipe from a pipe supplier and buy the silicone bends you need from ASH (again on ebay) etc. Try to avoid the universal intercooler kits on ebay - the pipe is thin, and the silicone hoses are utter shite.

Above one is fine, I have same on my car

Need to work out how much space you have and go through dimension of intercooler and see which one fits best, don't need a huge one obviously

I like the ones which have inlet/outlet facing the engine but they're a bit rare in small sizes, rally design have a few

I have seen that cooler on another thread, the turbo I am looking at with the manifold is of a charade gtti.. Sophia_Bush had this exact turbo with manifold on his 1.1 and made 120bhp. So it will give me a good enough gain on a vtr

My mate had problems with boost leaks and took his golf to a custom exhaust company to make him up a solid pipe so I think I will do that in the near future

I think I will go for the one which Ross posted Is that the intercooler on the nova?

Titch ran the above intercooler on his 300bhp 106. It was maxed out at that, but it did work 30psi too

No, one on the Nova was from the intercooler king, I think thats what they were called anyway.

One posted above is on the corsa, has 57mm ends

more than enough for a asthmatic 10psi If I make 180bhp I will be more than happy.

    noooo
that kit is frapping awful. Please don't The hoses are wank, the pipes are wank. The intercooler is fine, but then it's the same as the one on it's own.

Buy the intercooler, mock it up, and figure out how you want your boost pipes to run. It'll be a touch more hassle, but you'll have exactly what you want and with pipework you can trust.

Do you think the solid boost pipes from a good exhaust maker would be worth it? less joins less chance of a leak

I bought my first boost pipes from here: http://www.aluminiumwarehouse.co.uk/...131/index.html

Something like £30 delivered for 2.5m of pipe - enough to do about 4 cars

    Use these:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/57mm-2-1-4...#ht_1206wt_905
    for the straight joins

    and these:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Sili...ht_1750wt_1163
for the 90 degree bends etc. You may need 45 bends, or a reducer onto the turbo (to air filter) or onto the TB etc. Only you know. But you can make your own kit cheaply, and with good parts

I wish i still had some pics of the universal piping kit i bought last year, the hoses were terrible there was no reinforcement in them so they were stretchy as hell. Combined with the nasty jubilee clips they supplied there was no way it was going to hold any boost without popping off somewhere.

On the note of clips to go for, its worth getting mikalor's if your running a decent level of boost. Even if you dont, its nice to have piece of mind the hoses aint gonna start popping off on a track day.

Clamps look good so I think they will be getting used And I think I will avoid cheap boost pipes.. I will only be running 10 psi for now but I want some scope in the future for more boost

Good value for money then? Is there pics on you're progress of you mounting up the cooler? Just to get an idea?
  17. #17
its good value for money, but id advise you buy a cooler first, mock it up as said,t hen try figure a way to route them before you buy any pipes, as it maywell work out cheaper just buying the bits you need, but there again with ppostage and what some ppl charge for pipes and elbows i wouldnt know

i had alot of the kit left when i finished, so i sold it, personally i think that would be the best option...as youve got what you need, or keep as spares, i burst a pipe by it rubbing on my chassis...so i had to buy another piece which worked out at about £20! as it was a 90 degree that id chopped

also..2.25" is one of the most expensive sizes to buy...but alot of intercoolers run 2.25" ports, so be careful when buying a cooler, try keep ports the size of the pipes you want to run if poss..as youll have to buy silicone reducers on top if you dont, and they can work out about £25 for 2

EDIT- yeah pics in my thread iirc

I ordered the one ross showed me last night so should be here this week, not going to start the build until christmas time, I want to make it go round corners and brake well before I add power

I couldnt agree more with you mate, I added power with out uprating other components, such as, brakes. Easy enough to hold on when bootin it. But it's a whole different ball game slowing the thing down lol

I hope your progress thread will contain some juicy pics in the months to come.

I use the toyosport kit aswell. Does the job tbh. Great value for money.

Imo it is something loads if people overlook, already done loads to help out handling, group a lower engine mount, solid axle mounts, polybushed wishbones, raised the back OFF the bumpstops... if it is picture heavy like my itb build it will be ok

Be Preared to buy a million other things tbh lol

I've a list somewhere of a lot of the parts I bought (the list is everything I bought through ebay I think) the first time around if that's of any use to anyone? I could make a seperate post for it.
