  1. #1
my 8v 1.4 furio, is tapping/knocking one garage have said it could be either tappets camshaft or some rocker ball end thing, im confused and need help! watch video
  2. #2
Get a video of it and put it up here. Could be tappets or it could be something more terminal
  3. #3
video now on youtube, please watch and help

Thats an odd one as it sounds "deeper" that how tappets usually do but it still could be tappets but sounds a lot like piston slap to me going from the video on my crappy head phones. When did it start doing this and have you had it apart? Oil lights not on is it?
Check your timing isn't out, as mad as it sounds i've known engines where the valves were only just tapping the piston tops slightly making a noise similar to yours

Cant be piston slap! It had brand-new head about 15,000 miles ago everything was set up ok, you can feel it if you put hand on rocker cover, and no no lights at all.

Why couldnt it be piston slap?
Are you sure oil is getting to the top end of the engine?
  7. #7
I'd say that was a rattled crank buddy, I would'nt be running it until i check the big end bearings have'nt picked up.
  8. #8
thats your bottom end mate have you been ragging it?
and have you put plenty of oil in it?
  9. #9
That sounds exactly how my old engine did, got deeper and deeper as I left it and I paid my local garage something really little to do the tappets n that sorted it right out, well there was a few taps after but nothing unusual for a pug haha

someone didnt check their oil did they . . .

    and now its too late.

a chimp in work the other day started a car with no oil in ... i hear it all the time, so long as its off and filled, it stops there and then.
but there has been times where its been too late and we've forked out for new lumps.
  13. #13
So what we saying then? Oil change and then get tappets done? What's best oil to use
  14. #14
Give it a good service anyway. It recommends using 10w-40 semi and do the tappets.

But as said, of it is the bottom end, that could be expensive.
  15. #15
So mini service and tappets, can you use 5w40? Thinner so oil gets round better, does anyone think that engine flush or tappet treatment would do anything? Some one told me maybe the spark plugs could be loose?!?!
  16. #16
i doubt a service and doing the tappets will solve it mate.

    try a new block.

guy i know had this noise the other week, everyone thought it was dead bottom end; turned out to be a cracked manifold.

I dont think you quite understand, Your engine is fucked. You have rattled your crank by the sounds of it.

thats exactly what we thought, even sounded like it was coming from the bottom end as it got louder as you put your head down farther. Loud clacking/ticking. Guy ended up changing his whole engine, then when he started the new engine the exact same noise was there.

Not saying its that in this case, but it sounds so similar its not funny.

and on that note, buy my S2 Rallye engine.

    thats really interesting.
even teh smallest of blows are noticable, and at the manifold i would of thought it would have been obvious!

bet he was pissed after starting up the new engine lol.

Think that is an unwise answer, it would be worth trying little things first, if not...

@topic, that does not sound healthy lol

    That is seriouly unlucky.

My mate a few years back, His rallye started rattling its cunt off, Thought that was the big end. Turned out the head gasket had blown in between bores, So it was infact pinking.

LOL, furious. Especially as we were going to France in his car just over a day later! Once he realised it was the mani, he took that off as I said I had one he could have a loan of. In removing his mani, he promptly burst his radiator, so I had to get him one of them as well lol

i would of smashed my fucking car up after that! i would have been livid!

    that did make me chortle.

Just to confirm I'm NOT down on power at all! Now I'm no mechanic but if it was something big like a few of you are i would be down on power and I'm not
  29. #29
well set the tappets and change the oil and see if it goes away.
  30. #30

Ahh good to hear! Would have been shaiting myself hearing that in my car. Nice to hear it's sorted.
  32. #32
how was it rattling? shims not fitted?
  33. #33
yeah apparently, but the bloke didnt re seal the gasket cover, so oil is pissing everywhere, my drive way is covered! and engine is ditched!
  34. #34
So you wasn't checking the oil and lost it all and ruined your engine?

    Lesson learnt i hope?
  35. #35
no it was fine until the garage didnt re seal the rocker cover!
