kent Cams and a VTR Engine

  1. #1
Just bought a VTR lump with Kent cams. Can any one tell me how much extra power the Kent cams will give, and whether there are any better ones out there? Thanks
  2. #2
About 8-12 bhp I think unmapped I've got a pt40 in mine and its noticeably better than standard and yes there are better ones for example Newman ph3 which will require mapping as its a wilder cam and possibly uprated valve springs but not too sure on that

Thanks bud, It hasn't been mapped yet, Im going to get that done after xmas.
  4. #4
No worries mate, but don't get it mapped until you've done all the engine mods you want to get the best out of it
  5. #5
Yeah, get a four branch first then
  6. #6
    waste of time and money
  7. #7
How much lift does this kent cam have?
  8. #8
    cam not cams lol
  9. #9
Depends which kent cam, what other mods the engine has and how good the mapping is!

    Why have you said that?

Not everyone wants to just wack a VTS engine in, won't be many left in a couple of years anyway. I know it's more cost effective and so on but VTR engines aren't that bad?

I cba with the hassell of changing the whole bay for a 16v lump (even though i've done it twice before), pay more road tax and twice the amount of insurance. tbh, I can't afford it.

Stick a VTS/ Rallye box onto the 8V engine, along with a manifold and a good exhaust system and i guess you'll pretty much keep up with a 16v

What are the specs of yours, I take it its an 8v still?
  15. #15
as above vtr engines arnt that bad and they are pretty eco when driven properly but still 16v ftw

I had a Kent PT40 in my old 98bhp VTR. After having the timing adjusted on the rollers, it made 118bhp ATF with breathing mods. Despite how it looked on the spec sheet, the cam was really mild - engine didn't seem to run any differently, and didn't need a remap.

For what it cost, I noticed bugger all difference. A VTS transplant would have been cheaper. You'd be better off changing the VTR gearbox for one with the sports cluster imo.

im pretty sure the late vtr gearbox has the sports cluster

Learn something new every day. In that case, something with a shorter final drive.

i ph3'd my vtr. Green induction, rallye inlet, 4.2.1, straight through. I REPEAT, WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, cheaper and more effective to 16v, then you still got potential for more without spending £kk's, ive nothing against the 8v, i still drive one

I hadn't bought the VTR for more power. My 1.4 furio seized, so looked for a local cheap engine, and found this one. Its got a Kent Cam PT40 in it.

what cam would u guys say is the best for a mk2 vtr without remapping and things??
  24. #24
why is every one so fucking cocky on here , help the kid or shut the fuck up !
  25. #25
yh i know pal wel said too many cocky people on here, go for it mate, vtr's are quick very1 thinks that vts are all it their only sligtly faster not much init, stick with vtr cheaper insurance, better mpg, and also more reliale, everytime i hear a vts messed up, vtr's are way better in reliability, and im sure if you do all that to it and a remap it will surprise a few cars out their, mine is standard completely just got a sports backbox and a panel performance filter and its pretty quick! service it regulary and it'll look after you!

totally depends mate, if its not timed up right it could make less power, ony the rollers will tell, its mega mild bt its not exact wild either, about 8bhp probs

The engine has the original cam pulley fitted, so it's probably at standard timing. Waste of time and money messing on with it. Run the engine as is, and you're likely to see a couple of ponies above standard power imo. The cam is nowhere near wild enough for you to benefit anything from a remap.

Yeah I was looking them up earlier, but from a 1.4, will still be more power
