Gearbox change

  1. #1
Just been quoted £200 + vat, (so £240) to change the gearbox on my vts.

It broke on me and I've abandoned it in twickenham at my sisters, this place said they'll pick it up from there as well so that saves me hassle.

I've already got the gearbox sat about

Just wandering if this is a reasonable quote as I haven't a clue.

    Cheers in advance

Don't talk crap. £240 to pick the car up and replace the box is a bargain from a garage..

I charge £100 to take a box off and re-fit another.

It is a very straight forward job providing your not cack handed with tools.

£250 is steep, but thats a garage for you.

Get the new box, haynes manual and dig out your tools - its an easy job mate

With a friend, knowledge and the right tools it is. I would say a frustrating job without a ramp.

I would say £150 tops. £40 to collect the car, 100 to swap boxes and a tenner for oil.

At garage prices, I'm going with this. I mean you could attempt it yourself but why don't you go with the people on here who'll do it for £100 odd?

Thanks for the replies, rang another garage that quoted me £100 cash

It's just a matter of getting it there as he said he could pick it up til I mentioned it was lowered.

I'll have a look through the haynes and maybe give it a bash, if it goes tits up I'll just break the car maybe

Otherwise £100 seems a lot more reasonable it's just towing it there

usually charge £50 plus £10 for oil a garage charging £100 is fair price tbh

Yeah it does seem a good price, but realistically I can't afford it so if I can do it myself I'll feel so much better about it anyway.

Been meaning to learn more about cars for ages, gotta start somewhere I guess

if your gunna give it a bash, get the front up on axle stands, chock the rear wheels etc.

    take front wheels off.
    take shit covers off
drain the gbox oil out via the drain point.
undo the bolts that hold the suspension leg to the wishbone, its underneath the hubs, behind the brake discs. knock them out and use a bar or something to lever the strut out from the wishbone, do drivers side and passengers.
then its a case of pulling the driveshafts out from the gearbox.
haynes manual tells you how to remove them from the box. pretty easy.
unbolt the gbox mount underneath the car. you need to remove the whole bracket.
take off gear linkages completely - these get in the fucking way.
    unbolt the starter motor
    unassemble the clutch cable.
unbolt all earth leads from the box.
then unbolt the 4 bolts holding the gbox on. before you remove the bolts, you will need a trolley jack to support the weight of the box, so make sure the car is as high up on the stands as you can get it.
using the jack you will be able to unbolt the top gbox mount and pull the box out towards the inside of the car. then lower it down and remove.

you can if you want to, remove the drivers driveshaft completely as i found it got in the way of the trolley jack.

refit the new clutch, gbox. id thought id post this just to give you a brief idea mate. i hate changing saxo gboxes. i think its a nightmare.

id personally fit a new clutch and thrust bearing. and id personally pay the 100 quid to get it done.

Thats why you remove the mount from the box, then bolt box to block then refit mount.
