Mine used to do that for a bit sometimes. Turned out to be the idle control valve.

idle control valve, possibly a vacuum leak. I had this problem and it was a bit of both lol

Ah thanks lads, I pulled up on my drive and was like ... Errr whats going on Sax.... & Would this be okay to leave? or?

I had it on mine and it slowly got worse as the days went on. You'll pull up to the lights and get 3/4k for no reason, then 1k then 2k. lol. Thats what mine did. It even brought on the E.M light after a while. BUT all it needed was the idle control valve cleaning and not had a problem since.

I left mine for so long that the car fucked itself and wouldn't start properly or hold revs atall lol. Was so wierd.
Got an icv from local scrappy for a tenna, fitted it, and the problem was gone

Put it this way it`s not a good idea leaving the icv like, your use more fuel as it gets worse because your engine will be revving.

This is /hilarious/ when approaching a roundabout, take your foot off the accelerator to coast before using the brakes...except the car speeds up because the ICV has kicked in, and then you drop the clutch and all you can hear is brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr a little off putting to say the least!

Depending on what icv unit it is, it can be difficult to clean. Mine was the bosch sealed unit, meaning that i couldnt actually take it apart. So i just got a new one.

He has a mk2 VTR, so he should be able to take it apart and clean it.
