best way to clean engine block?

  1. #1
as title says i want to clean up my engine block, 2 problems though, first of all its still in the car and secondly the head isnt on it

should i wait until the head is back on so i dont get moisture in the combustion chambers?

but on the plus side the loom is out, the engine mount is off and all the alternator and cambelt parts have been removed apart from the crank pulley, as well as the exhaust manifold so ive got plenty of room to clean it

I would also like to know this too, i was thinking about using back to black spray to clean all the black parts including ancillaries. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Petrol is alright.

Brake cleaner and degreaser is my favourite though with a wire brush a brillo pad and a scouring pad to finish off, then another spray of brake cleaner to get any left overs off.

Really cant cant beat carlack 68 special cleaner. Its a citrus based de greaser.....no silicones so painting the block after wont be a problem.

Hi mate, I have got some Gunk that you can use to clean your block. Still got half a big can of it at mine and a suitable paint brush to scrub the block with. Let me know if you could make use of it.

i use the gunk stuff also it is the best and easiest stuff to use
as for all your rubber hoses stuff just use a set of baby wipes, should come up fairly good

Gunk mate, paint it on then use a small wire brush to get in the tricky bits.Afterwards block of any holes in the block & lightly go over with a hosepipe.Keep repeating the process until your happy.
