im hoping someone can help me with a problem i seem to have from about 65mph+. when im doing any speed in any gear my car seems fine even in high revs etc, but as soon as i hit about 65 onwards in any gears 3rd,4th or 5th etc i seem to get a kind of thumping coming from the engine and as i go faster it gets louder i can also feel it vibrating the footwells and the pedals even passengers have noticed it. its done this ever since the day i bought it. my dad thought it may be the tyres needing balancing but i know its an engine problem as it completely stops if i come off the accelerator but when i press back on it it immediatly starts with the thumping noise again, it also doesnt seem to affect power at all, the car pulls all the way through to over a ton with ease?
does anyone have any ideas? its a standard vtr engine with a stainless steel straight through exhaust (not sure make etc)
engine thumping noise at high speed...

#2funny one tbh, what do you mean by thumping, hollow bang? metal to metal? every so often or constant?
if i had to guess id say youve got a dodgy engine mount?
but could be allsort dependant... -
#3its really hard to explain its not a metal to metal sound its kind of just a really loud thumping and yes its constant and gets faster as i do more revs etc so i know its in the engine, i have no idea what to do about it to be honest i havnt serviced it though so im going to be servicing it within the next week changing the plugs etc aswell im really hoping its something minor!
.... i thought it might just be normal for a small older petrol engine to make sounds like this at high speeds aswell? considering there is no power loss at all odd really, ive come down from a 2.2 vectra though and that would do 130 with no worrying sounds like this at all...

#4worn inner cv joint?
-
#5worn/loose engine mount imo!
-
#6Engine mount for me too.
-
#7inner cv boot does make this noise but not constantly like you say, its more when you go over slight bumps you will get knock.. from what ive read i would have to say its an engine mount but to be sure you could always pop it in a garage to see if they can see the problem for a small fee
-
#8in my experience there was a constant rumble under acceleration from the worn cv joint also felt though the steering wheelQuote:inner cv boot does make this noise but not constantly like you say, its more when you go over slight bumps you will get knock.. from what ive read i would have to say its an engine mount but to be sure you could always pop it in a garage to see if they can see the problem for a small fee

#9yep can also feel it through the steering wheel, accelerator pedal, footwells and basically the whole carQuote:in my experience there was a constant rumble under acceleration from the worn cv joint also felt though the steering wheel
ill have to pop it into a garage and attempt to explain i think although when i say "it only happens when i go above 65 or 70" i think they might look at me a bit stupid and be like yes well the speed limit is under that anyway shithead
ha!

#10have to agree with others engine mount
-
#11worn engine mount for sure
-
#12so..... take it to a garage?
and how soon should i get it done, do i need to be worried? dont really have the money to sort it at the moment
-
#13it would most like be the rear engine/gearbox mount what a peice of piss to change mate and could be had for £20 on ebay
-
#14but then again if i buy it for 20 quid then get one of my mates to fit it and it doesnt fix it ive just wasted time and money .... people are telling me different things i need to know for definate really what the problem is and how to fix it not just waste money on a rear engine mount when that could not even be the problem
