Vtr engine seized?

  1. #1
Hi my first post on here.

It all started a couple of weeks ago everytime i tuned left or went over a big bump the engine temp light and also oil light used to flick on and off, Then last Sunday above 3k revs they was a metal rattling coming from the front end what i thought could be the exhaust heat shield and the above lights stayed on permanently.

All stayed the same till Wednesday when i was driving up the m1, i dropped off from 70mph down to 50mph through the roadworks and the rattling sound became permanent and i started to lose power then the engine stalled and wouldn't start back up.

The aa came out and said he thought the engine could be seized, at present when you turn the key it sounds like a flat battery but all the electrics work and the orange enging light is also on.

Sorry for the long story but i thought if anybody knows whats up it will be you guys, so has anybody got any ideas whats up?

so the oil light came on, and you kept driving it. Then drove it up the motorway at 70. With the oil light on.

you have fucked it mate, no oil in the car clearly !!

I was told that it could be the engine earth strap with both lights flicking on and off, I was actually having the car checked over once id got to where i was going.

So is there oil in it?

Take out the spark plugs, and try turning the engine over by hand by using a ratchet/socket on the cam pulley bolt.

Just spots of oil showing on bottom of dipstick, oil was only changed 4 month ago so i wouldnt have thought it would use that much in a short space of time also driveway has no traces of oil on it.

sounds like the headgasket has gone to me.

you have continued to drive it, and now its fucked.

I dont think engines need oil, its a ploy by oil companies.

Odd times when the icv had been sticking they was white smoke coming out of the exhaust but never when it idled fine.half way too so dont think the car every over heated. The engine temp always used to sit just above

  18. #18
How do I manually turn the engine over or try too?

    Thanks for replys everybody

Sounds like a dried up engine and the Cambelts snapped. That's why the starter motor is still able to go round. The rattling noise will have been the valves smacking the pistons. Luckily 2nd hand VTR engines are pretty cheap, sub £100.

Take off the upper timing belt cover to check the belts in one piece, take out spark plugs, put a socket on the bolt going into the cam, try to turn it.

Tip: you might need an 80ft breaker bar.

    Cheers josh and gab...

It's looking like around the £250 mark for used engine and fitting which don't seem to bad.

  25. #25
Yeah I've just looked at that Sam, it's worth it if it's going to save me about £75 on a engine. How longs membership take to set up if I send payment by PayPal?

instant mate and it lasts a year its been the best £10 ive ever spent saved me so much money this year
  27. #27
tbh £250 to have another engine sourced and fitted is very reasonable id charge that allone to fit an engine
  28. #28
As cheffjizz just said, if they're going to supply and fit for £250, bite there hand off! Might as well put a 16v'er in there while your at it.

seems abit to cheap to be honest makes you wonder if they will even bother doing a proper job of it

Define "proper job" then? Aslong as the engine isn't held in with cable ties most other issues can be sorted easily

    Just an update..
Ive been out to the car to try and drain the fuel, i took the fuel lines off the fuel rail and turned the ignition on to try and pump fuel through but i noticed the timing belt cogs nudge a little bit, I put a litre of oil in that i had put everything back together and the engine fired up. It was fine at idle but the rattling was there from 1.5k revs, Ive now put the correct amount of oil in but after 2 mins running at idle the engine cut out and im back to square 1.

could this just mean head trouble and not a totally screwed engine?
