mpg after cambelt change

Had my Cambelt changed about 1k ago, didn't do it myself as was to scared i'd muff it up! First off, it still sounds a bit whiney, it should have settled down by now shouldnt it? Secondly, been skint since then so only been filling up a tenner at a time but managed to fill the tank, all of a suddern its doing about 5-8mpg less. Before you say give it a service, it got done (oil/filters/sparks/ht leads) about 1k before the cambelt. So is it possible that's whats caused it?

Hmm seems a bit strange mate, what car? cc?
The tensioner could be a little tight or even one of the aux belts take one off run the engine for short time see if noise still present if so its prbably the timing belt if not just the aux belt too tight.

Cambelt or service shouldnt make your mpg worse, any problems picked up in service? and does it whine more when its hot?

    It's a saxo phase 1 1124cc.

Timing could be slightly advanced causing the mpg to go down?

You don't notice it until you change gear. As you dip the clutch you hear it slow down as it were and then pick up as you accelerate until the engine noise masks it. Had the tension and watep pump done at the same time so could be one of them?

Hard to say without hearing it but if your saying it whines after a cambelt change then likelyhood is the belt is too tight. were you live?

Cant you retension the belt? on an 8v its a piece of piss (providing you do the tensioner securing nut up to 23nm when you've adjusted it)

take it back to them mate. Probs a duff tensioner.

Its probably been done up too tight, as you can adjust the 8v ones yourself. I use a square gearbox tool and its storage bar to do mine then just torque it up. Ten minute job

Sounds like it's done up a bit too tighjt, get the garage to check it or re-do it if you're not confident about doing it yourself. If that doesn't sort it out then the timing's probably slightly off as this can increase your emissions and wear on the engine making it struggle.
