Cleaned the throttle body...

  1. #1
Hi guys, as some of you know I have had problems with my car's idling lately, so I took the throttle body to bits and cleaned it up, it was discusting, no wonder it wouldnt idle properly, but my question is: "How did all that crap get there?"

So heres the pics I took of the Idle Control Valve before and after cleaning:

There was much more of that black gunge in the tube that the Idle Control Valve goes in, so i reckon it was getting stuck, as that stuff was soooo sticky

But yeah, how did it all get there?

    Thanks
    Ben

    So standard air filter.

There's an oil breather pipe that feed from the head of the engine back into the inlet, just upstream of the ICV. No idea why they do this, might be emissions or maybe as a way of lubricating the icv (needs a bit of lub as it's a tight fit for the plunger - so prolongs the ICV life).

Anyway over time it cloggs into the gunk you found.

Ah right, I understand, I don't know why the put the breather pipe there, although the connector on the airbox was pretty gunked up so oil has obviously been going through there on a regular basis; gave everything a bit of a wipe down and clean, and it all looks better now, starts much quicker than before and isnt lumpy anymore

Yeah it's emissions, I always remove them, catch tank or breather filter but flyers make a mess of bay,

Id be prepared to fit something like that to save all those components that suffer lol, how do you fit them? Is there a guide? And what effect would it have on the emissions?

    (Sorry for all the questions)

    Thanks

If you put a breather on will it keep the em missions where they are ?

Yeah that looks alright, but what happens to the emissions?
  12. #12
Your emissions will kill at least three new-borns a week.
Well you're technically venting oil vapour into the atmosphere which is a no no but it'll never fail an MOT. Mine has been through two MOTs with that setup on and it's been fine.

I had same problem mate seemed to work for few days but playing up again now!will remove see if some more crap has entered it again.

That probably means that all the previous dirt has overworked the icv and killed it. when clean it lowered the stress on it so it flickered back into life, only to die shortly after. get a new one

Looks like someones been using a crapper filter on it in the past (or none :/).

Yeah it was pretty crapped up, hopefully shouldnt need to do anything else to it, although a new idle control valve is on the way to me, i just needed the car to keep working til then, so cleaned the whole thing, we will see what the next couple of days bring...

no your right the other dude doesn't know what he's on about

I think he was suggesting the main air filter being crap and allowing dirt to come through and covering the icv

Your telling me! As soon as I took a proper look at it, I was like, no wonder it didnt work! Ive got a new one to put in now, think I'll wait to put it in, as the one I cleaned is working alright now, still feels like shes misfiring a little bit when warm though :/
