Annoying Cambelt Whine VTS

  1. #1
Recently had a new Cambelt, tensioners, water pump on my VTS but it seems to be really noisy above 2,500 revs.

Its definatly coming from behind the belt cover and my mechanic has double checked it to make sure its not too tight.

    Any ideas?????

    Thanks

    probs a duff tensioner.

That does sound like an over tightened belt to me, or the belt cover touching a pulley, but if its been checked it can't be.

    Over tightened belt I reckon.

My vtr did the Same, I slackened it a FRACTION and it stopped.

I find non-OE belts tend to whine a little compared to the genuine Pug/ Citroen ones, something to do with the ribs IIRC. Sounds like yours is a little too tight though - I don't notice mine till about 4k - 5k revs and onwards.

    Most likely too tight.

As all the ribs on the belt are equal distance apart it's easy for the belt to start building up a rhythm which gives you the noise... and because it's tight. Same reason tyres have different sized blocks of tread, stops the noise.

contitech belts are noisy in my experience

Cheers everyone, i doubt it was a cheap belt as he won't fit any cheap parts. I really don't know what to do, I will suggest slackening it of a tad like stevo said and see what happens.

    Thanks

Old vtr one was, new one isn't but once I've been
Boosting it about it gets the same little laid back hum that the old one had
