new user - whats missing from this VTR engine?....

  1. #1
Hi all, just bought a 03 plate VTR and need to sort the engine out

theres some relays on the drivers side that are exposed, I think there should be a cover on them? Any ideras what its called so i can check eBay for one? Are they model/mk specific?

    also,

I want rid of the green cone filter, I see several types of air boxes available but unsure which one it should have, last owner has binned the original one and can not remember the shape.

much help appreciated! I look forward to having a bit banter with you guys!

Looks like it needs more than the engine sorting out!

    That looks a little rough.

Actually it looks rough as fuck mate.....check for holes under the ecu and fusebox.

That looks a right mess lol

Its a little project for 2012, nothing I can't sort out

Doesnt seem to be missing anything from looking at it...

    Could do with tidying up..
Such as engine bay welding up, and respraying, possibly an ECU cover, new battery and ecu trays, rocker cover respraying.. maybe just buy a new one looking at it, oh and a very good steam clean!

I think you need an ECU cover, if that is what you are talking about?

whoosh has that been abandoned in a pond or something thats hurrendous
  10. #10
the point of a project is to buy something to restore, not a mint one...

    thanks for the advice

It doesn't look that bad to be honest mate, i think alot of these guys are posting during their first reaction "wow" emotion. Once you look at it closely it only looks to need a little work.

Whats rest of the car like? Are you going to start a progress thread?

Ahhh, dirty as fook. Not been loved at all.

how can i get pics to load?

oil filler cap was put on within a minute, i have an ocd for attention like that

car is filthy but will come up ok, already cleaned the standard wheels up after 2 hours of cleaning brake dust, washed and clay bard the full car to remove 8 years of dirt, and gave it a quick hoover

its a clean straight car, just dirty really

Going by that pic, all I can see is the oil breather looks pissed where it meets the air filter.

Doesn't look that bad to me, bit of elbow grease and a lick of paint, be good as new

Not everyone is bothered about what their car looks like as long as it drives.... That looks like standard dirt for a car thats been in a dusty old barn for a year or two.

Anyhow, the relay on the right is the power steering relay IIRC. The ECU is on the left with the three plugs, you can pickup a cover for peanuts.

excellent found one on ebay thanks

any idea what the stanbdard air box and pipes look like? Google images show a few tyres (round, square, connectors etc)

    thanks

Need a good clean and an ECU cover

No dirtier than my engine bay when I bought mine tbh if anything mine was probably worse! As said mate nothing missing just needs a clean and a ecu cover!

bet that would look 100% better after some de greaser and a steam cleaner has been through it

wouldn't bother with the ecu cover. 3 plug vtr's didn't come with them. Just a good clean up and paint the rocker cover!

    what about a battery cover?

worth setting up a project post?

all my pics are on facebook tho and it dont seem to like to link to them

was gonna say a bit of elbow greese and lick of paint on the roacker cover witha ecu coer and it will look better than the majority on here lol

is it jsut me or do mk'2 generally have rustier bays than mk1's?? ive owned an x reg 106 1.1 and a mk2 vtr and both bays were pretty bad, my mk1 vts and my r reg gti have much better bays

My mk1 had a better bay than my mk2 but the mk1 has done 40k more miles so hardly a fair comparison.

I think the car colour makes a difference as the paint coverage seems better on some cars than others. Posi and silvers seem to be poor but black and white seem better from my experience.
