Noisy VTR

  1. #1
when I bought the car just before Xmas it was very quiet. just lately its started sounding very tappy, and almost like a diesel pulling away,

Im due to get the timing belt done in the next week or so, just waiting for a mate of a mates garage to be free. the oil is at max and it hasnt lost a drop,

car seems to pick up ok, but once it gets to 80 it runs out of steam, engine sounds like it wants to pop if I push it...

Anyone got any ideas what it could be, or what I can ask the mechanic to look at,

Click Picture for video of car in idle.. It does sound worse when moving but I cant for obviosu reasons record that..

    Adjust tappets?

Set the tappets, stop ragging it when it's cold

It was on mind but didn't realise that would make the car have a slower top speed too

as above would that make the top speed slower ?

I must say I have on occasion give it some when cold... so at least that answers a question for me

It won't make it slower, it'll make it quiet and pro Long the life of your rockers.

Ragging when cold is the main cause of noisy tappets

A vtr will never be quite anyway. Is it your first vtr? As maybe your worrying over nothing? The 8v vtr is not a quite engine

A vtr with no issues and properly adjusted tappets should be no noisier then any other, granted they are old now so can be quite noisy, but you can make them quiet, they only persist to be noisy when the rockers are worn

thanks guys, I have asked my mate to ask his mate to do the tappets for me when he does the timing belt,

but has anyone got any idea what could be causing the engine to feel like its really straining when it gets upto 80..

lesson learnt no more playing until the engine is warmed up..

It will never be a quiet engine though if it's not the tappets it's the injectors.

If you drive fast on when the engine is cold it will do this.
  13. #13
The tappets will need doing when the head has been off anyway, it'll sound like a bag of spanners without

Give it a service. New plugs and filters

Mine was noisy and it ended up being the sparkplugs working loose :/

Edit: should only lose steam around 110ish on standard gearbox, mine struggles at 100
