Weight reducing

  1. #1
Is there a thread on here or a guide to stripping my car to reduce weight as much as i can? I have removed seats/ spare wheel + insulation (or what ever you want to call it) just wondering if there is a proper guide, as im sure there is lots of things im forgetting, or ideas i haven't thought of!

    Cheers

It depends on how anal you want to be about it. There is all sorts you could do, remove plastic bits inside, roof lining, carpet, wiring and so on

    and swaging of course

basically making holes in none structral parts to decue weight, or just cut panels out like inner door frames lol

Could replace the rear windows with PVC? I'd imagine they'd look fine if they were tinted the same.

Swaging is done with a press tool, it curves the cut lip so that teh strengh is kept

i was going to say those holes look as if they bend inwards a little

Full set of polycarbs, dash out, cut the inner skins out where possible and fit carbon/fibreglass pannels. Tbh saxos are weak enough as it is, I'd serously consider a cage.

Ok cheers! i'll let you know how i get on. Got the tyres on, getting the manilfod and de-cat on this evening, then start the stripping!

Id persoanlly gut the dash and leave the shell in place.

    Cars without dashes look shit.

get the tar out of the footwells, and the deadening behind the dash out. that's very heavy.

Check my thread for weights, it's about 12kg for the footwell tar and dash stuff I think

oh and the tar on the rear arches too!

How to i get to the deadening behind the dash? is that adash out jobby? And the footwell tar? what exactly do you mean, you mena under carpet, or under chassis? sorry im being dumb

That tar stuff is a cunt, my hands are covered in scars from the heatgun. Id recomend doing that this time of year i did it last summer and with the heatgun in the footwells my cars cabin was topping the high 30's

Got 4 sainburys bags out though its suprising how much there is and its weight..

the panels i see you have "swaged" ARE VERY MUCH structural parts ,as you will find out if you have a good roll or a rear end shunt.
it would cost the car maker nothing to do that at the factory in production ,so there is a good reason why it is not done,as the car would be lighter and more fuel efficient if it made a weight saving of any consideration.
a picky mot tester could probably fail the car for doing that , as those not std holes will be within 30cm,s of load beaing bodywork as defined in the mot --
and the actaul weight you will save will be very disappointing.
    is not worth the effort

I'd only do that if I had a full rollcage. Sort of defeats the objective.....
I've seen more cut out but the car has a serious rollcage to give structural ridgidity
