Tapping noise

I have searched but cant really find anything to help my problem

Basically i can hear a tapping noise from the engine but only when i have driven for a while and its idling (it could be doing it while i drive but i cant hear it)

I have changed the oil last month and its still up to the max mark, spark plugs have been changed today so they are all tight.

Im not sure what it is because its not constantly doing it from start up just as said above when warm :/

Anybody any ideas?

My guess would be your tappets mate 8v's are prone to it

As the car gets warm the oil thins out, making it tap.

i know all garages are different but how much do you think it would cost to do?

Its only a 20 min job so about £30? But some garages may try charge you for a new rocker cover gasket.

If you remove the rocker cover is it not best to replace the gasket tho?

If the gasket leaks after taking the rocker cover off, then just replace it yourself, it's only 2x8mm bolts holding it on, just don't do them up too tight, they are easy to snap...and watch out for the two spacers underneath, don't let them fall in to the engine...

My furio use to tap like crazy

did it myself was 20 inlet 40 exhaust i think.. those numbers ring a bell anyway!.. all sorted now didnt have to change the gasket on it because it isnt a stupid bit of paper that breaks its a big bit of rubber, your choice though i guess..

TDC = Top Dead Centre...basically means when you're watching the tappet you want to adjust, you stop turning the engine when the tappet stops rising, if you miss it, just turn the engine back the other way, you'll notice the tappets rise and then "hover" before falling again, you want to adjust them when they are "hovering"

Spanner to un do the bottom nut, then a socket to adjust the top bolt which is the tappet, the lower nut is then tightened up to stop the tappet working loose.

When I adjusted mine I did them up really tight to the feeler guage so I had to yank the guage out from the tappet, as it does want to be 0.20 and not 0.25 etc.

He is talking about when you turn the engine over, you jack up one wheel and put it in fifth.. then you can turn the engine over by turning the wheel

i dont mean to be rude, but it sounds like you have not got a clue what to do here. what you are about to adjust is crucial to the engine performance, and doing it wrong could put it in worse shape than it is. if I have time today before I go to uni. I will look through the haynes manual and scan the page for you. i doubt i will have time, as i have an assignment to submit, a 4 hour lecture, followed by work. so it will most likely be some time tonight 22:00 ish..

I don't mean this horribly but if you are struggling this much I would suggest taking it to a garage. Anyway, if you take off the rocker cover, and look from above, inlet is at the back of the head and exhaust is at the front of the head.

Well i managed to change the axle on my old 106 and bleed the brakes up and i never tryed anything like that before so i should be able to do it....i just like to know exactly what to do mate :-)

Before you ruin your engine, I can almost bank on it being a leaky exhaust manifold gasket or downpipe join.

Check these areas first before you start poking around with the tappets.

How would a that make a tapping noise? and i have listened to the engine when this noise happens and its coming from the block

I'm not going to sit here and explain how an engine works, so don't question my knowledge. But a leaky manifold gasket causes a ticking noise.

8v's do tend to be noisy engines though. Take it to a garage would be my advice.

I was asking for a simple answer because with my limited knowledge i dont see how that would cause a ticking noise, therefore if you shared your wisdom it could help me in future.

and i know 8v are loud engines but mines actually not loud at all (saxova will agree) but i never changed a cambelt or serviced a car untill 2 months ago, i did it by following guides and.my car is still running spot on

Is the noise most noticeable when cold and at low rpms when under load? Does the noise go away once the car is warm? If so, look at the exhaust.

I see where you're coming from, I only know what I know because of Haynes manuals and getting stuck in myself. Seriously, if you don't already have one - go and get one from a motor factors. You'll probably have to adjust tappets on loads of cars when you're older so it's a good idea to learn now!

Thats what im thinking its on a shitron, simple engines best to learn on in my eyes

when i did my cam belt i didnt have a clue what people were talking about when they explained it to me but as soob as i started i understood

and no the ticking noise only happens when i have been driving for a while (engine warm) and i can only hear it idling, but it could be doing it while driving but i cant hear it

Dude.. this is the tightest/smoothest 8v i've heard running! Especially as it's on 130k!

Tappet's are fine!

The ticking i could hear when it was running on my front, was the injectors.. perfectly normal!

My 8v didn't sound that healthy on 64k, and that was perfectly fine untill 98k when i took it out!

My old Vtr sounded like a box of nails mate. And that was after I checked almost everything over and it was fine. They're noisy little bastards so I wouldn't worry about it.
