Tappity Tappity Tap

Right instead of asking what the tapping noise is i know its my tappets. Searched the threads and found this:

adjusting the tapets is easy so get outside and do it yourself, put the car in 3rd gear and jack the car up on one side at the front, then remove the rocker cover and spark plugs so u dont have to work against the compression. next turn the front wheel thats raised off the floor in a forward direction to turn the engine over to the correct position and adjust the valves to the following specs using a feeler gauge:

valve clearances are- 0.20mm for all the inlet valves and 0.40mm for the exhaust valves

No.1 exaust valve fully open - adjust No.3 inlet and No.4 exhaust.

No.3 exhaust vale fully open - adjust No4 inlet and No2 exhaust.

No4 exhaust open- adjust No2 inlet and No1 exhaust.

No2 exhaust open - adjust No1 inlet and No3 exhaust.

Is this correct? Just checking you see before i start taking things apart.

Also is it easy to do? I have all the tools and moderate knowledge and a brother with more knowledge

    Cheers

they should only be checked and adjusted when the engine is cold

nope u cant adjust a vts as they have hydraulic tappets which automaticly adjust the valve clearences

I am going to be thick here and ask what adjusting the tappets actually does?

Don't use those values, you want to set the tappets when the engine is warm! and set them to - 0.20 inlet and 0.3 exhaust

I can't be bother to argue with anyone that thinks different; so speak to GMC and they'll confirm this.

    lol. now i'm confused.

I had somebody do it for me (mechanic/friend of the family) and as far as i know he only did it cold. What clearances i dont know but it still taps.

Then decided to do it myself and save a few squid

I'll try the cold way then if it still makes a noise try the warm way \-<

Right. This is gonna make me look like a dunce but i took the rocket cover off. spark plugs out no probs. When i looked into the engine i only had one problem.

What the hell does a tappit look like???

Instead of just adjusting anything i put the car back together (thankfully worked after) but whilst i was doing that noticed something weird about the sound it was making. Its more popping than tapping and its coming from something on the car which i think is an injector.

I've posted a video of what i'm on about. It seems to be coming from that blue thing

    Thanks for any help people

A tappet is like a piece of metal shaped like a checker ( you know the game checkers) it basically small cylinder which fills with oil and sit under each lobe of the camshaft, 8 tappets for a VTR 16 for a VTS obviously as you have a camshaft for both inlet and exhaust
  16. #16
    pictures tbh as im curious
  17. #17
this will work the same as if number 1 cylinder is on the rock between inlet and exhaust then adjust number 4 cylinder!!!
  18. #18
    Buy yourself a haynes manual.
Dont go adjusting things you arent sure about.
Be very careful that you dont overtighten the tappet nuts either.
If one snaps thats a head off jobby=££££££

so does anyone know for sure what the clearances are? ive got mine totally in bits right now, head gasket went yesterday so i might as well set them at the same time. i cant believe everyone rips french cars when they are so easy to work on!!!

First post is correct, my Citroen mechanic friend confirmed this when we adjusted mine
  22. #22
So, is it or isn't it possible to adjust on a VTS?
  23. #23
    Not possible, they are hydraulic.

Yes, a recent thread asked this question. But this one that is often quoted has some questions etc that needed confirming.
