can 8v timing run if 180 degrees out?

Hi, as per title. I've done the headgasket on my s1 8v 1.3 rallye and now it won't idle, its really noisy topend and sounds tappety, and it sends sort of a backfiring pop noise back through my airfilter when revved, I'm sure the valve clearances are right, and the timing holes line up spot on, but could they be 180 deg's out? Cheers.

If the timing pins are in then it should be fine... what about the firing order? It can backfire if it ignites in the wrong time...

Are you running HT leads on your car?If so check they`re all on securely & that theres no breaks in them(this could account for the popping noise)ie a misfire.
