--- Rowan's Saxo VTS Turbo ---

  1. #1
Been on saxperience a while now, just looking around.
Thought I'd start up a thread.

It all started with a '96 red VTR (one of the first of the line )

It ran 123.8 at the crank.

But every good thing comes to an end...

My EX-girlfriend borrowed my car and gave it back to me in this state

All said and done, I sold the wreck and got a 16V

All the parts I could salvage from my old VTR went on the VTS.

    Threw in the ICE

  2. #2
Added Injen air intake, raceland manifold and custom stainless exhaust without cat and the Invidia muffler.

    Bit of cleaning here

    LED tail lights

Got a feckin sweet deal on Brembo calipers with Carbone Lorraine pads.

    -Old EBC brakes-

    Old vs new discs

    new calipers

    more cleaning

Polyestered my rear panels so they would fit the 17cm Apline R-series speakers

And then it was time for a bit of maintenance...

New rad, timing belt, clutch and a good service. So figured it was easiest to pull out the engine

Refurbed the mani while I was at it

Mate helping out by cleaning the muck of the engine bay

And this is how she stands now

  3. #3
    thats looking good man!
    good work!

what size are those brakes ?

Sourced a mild steel tubular manifold
    wiseco forged low compression pistons
    2.5" piping for the downpipe

    Update:

    Mocal oil cooler

    JP4 camcovers

    Megane 225 injectors (390cc)

    Uprated gear links

Intercooler, oil catchcan, slim fan and 200CP sportcat

Vems 3.6 standalone with wideband lambda and on board MAP sensor

    Re-looming the bugger

And redesigned the woofer case to hold the 79Ah battery

(will post more fotos when it is upholstered)
  23. #23
    Wee update

    received the boost control solenoid

And I found out that the mild steel manifold was very poorly C02 welded and thus leaking worse than dodgy fossett.
So I decided I could do a better job and started off with 42mm (2mm thick) stainless.

(there is also some 2.5" bends, straights and v-band clamps on this picture for the exhaust)

    Initial welded up collector

So it is all tacked up, now just looking for the time to finish it.
  24. #24
Excellent work there fella. Really good!
Did you get the design from somewhere, or do it in CAD first or... freestyle it or what? Looks great!

Thanks! I collected as many pictures of especially dp mani's and free-styled it from there.

As I found out along the way, they are exactly equal length as each runner uses 4 90' bends.
(although one is more cut up than the other)
  26. #26

    MSD ignition thanks to trackdayparts.nl

Picking up a second engine to this saturday, so the real build can begin!
  29. #29
    42mm primary's? Really?
  30. #30
Effective inner diameter would be 38mm.
Too large? Have considered this affecting the spool up time of my tiny turbo..
  31. #31
Looks good! Where'd you source your stainless elbows?

Is it pipe or tube your using? It looks like tube to me?

It depends who you ask.. If it's a tiny turbo then you probably won't notice that much but still, if It was me I'd use 1.25" ID pipe.

Regardless, it looks like you have been doing a good job so far keep it up
  33. #33
    Cheers mate!

I use tube, sourced via a hobbyist who fabricates stainless exhausts. (here in Holland)
    http://www.freewebs.com/jbranbergen/uitlaten.htm

I'm going to run a T2 with T25 turbine housing, so I think lag won't be that bad. 1.5" was easier to source so I went with that.

Maybe in the future I'll re-design the whole thing (possibly with external wastegate) and really put a study in to it.

But in this case I'll ask you for your thoughts if you don't mind, I'm always open to good advice.
  34. #34

Got a crappy 16v lump for the rebuild. And while I was at it, got me a hoist and an engine mount(? don't know what its called in English)
  35. #35
    An evening in the mancave:

Testfitted the manifold and turbo, like a glove

(For the observants among us, yes there are only 3 runners on the manifold. I've decided to go with an external wastegate)

    Head off

    Them silly valves...

    Dafuq

    The cause

While the block is soaking up the detergent

How are you routing that? Not just on one primary (I hope!)?
  37. #37
I'm going to run a tube directly from the collector, that's why I took the runner out. So I can figure out how the hell I'm going to fit the basterd

ah perfect. Just to throw a spanner in the works, you know you should really not go against the flow (like the DP manifolds do) ... right? Let's test your welding/routing skills - see if you can route one somehow from the collector, in the gasflow direction hehe
    1 user thanked this post:
  39. #39
I have been pondering that, and also been trying to figure out what the minimum angle is that would be required to not interrupt the gasflow. Or at least not as much..

    A good challenge nonetheless.

But before I begin to fabricate anything for the wastegate, I would have get one first.
Need to know the measurements so I can keep that in account.

do you know which wastegate you'll be using yet? I run a turbosmart 38mm, but really like the watercooled tial ones! I think the measurements of the turbosmart one are available online - sure I've seen a schematic of it somewhere before...
  41. #41
I'm leaning towards the Tial F38 or MV-S V38. Not sure how the watercooling will affect anything, it's not going to be a full-on road race/ trackcar.
Maybe it will elongate the lifespan?

(On the other hand, having a watercooled wastegate makes one totally awesome)

This exactly. Much more hassle to plumb in, but serious "scene points"

I only know a few guys running watercooled (and both of them are 800+bhp, one is 1000+bhp). Don't think it's needed myself (but does look pretty...).

Small update, the flu got to me so wasn't really able to get real work done.

All the nuts & bolts are being replaced by stainless ones.

New stainless 2.5" mufflers and flex part

New valves, valve seats, seals, skimmed and vacuumtested

    Freshly honed block

Since the block and head were ultrasonicly cleaned they could use a fresh coat of paint

So now waiting for Citroen to supply the rest of the parts to rebuild the engine.

  45. #45
    Received new bearings

Prepped some brackets and other small stuff for sandblasting.
  46. #46
I've sanblasted some bits yesterday in the workshop at our service department.

The mechanics there were curious as always to see a pencil pusher getting his hands dirty

    Nice and clean

I will upload a pic tonight with a few bits testfitted with the stainless bolt & nuts. Should look pretty

Btw: I'm thinking of painting the head, as it's been ultrasonincally cleaned so it has some stains and wear. (my builder advised against sandblasting the due to it may leaving some residu)

    Any thoughts on this?
  47. #47
Get the head soda blasted. Had mine done ages ago and it's ideal as leaves no residue and is totally safe.

There are a few in the for sale section

If you need access to either the for sale or wanted areas of our forums, you need to wait a minimum of 30 days and accumulate 100+ posts, or sign up the princely sum if £10 to get "premium membership" (available in the website shop).

Evening rowan, how's the build coming along haven't been updating us much, and have you figured out how to weld in the collector on your manifold ?

    Regards
  63. #63
Evening Rob, it's coming along slow but steady.
Just bought a house which will be built this fall.
So I had to shift my priorities a bit

Ordered the last week, when they arrive I'll post up some pics.

No worries, I will finish this project!
  64. #64
That's some serious engine work, good to see it being done properly, can't wait to see it in the car
  65. #65
So after dealing with all the stuff that comes with buying a house that's not build yet, I finally found some time

    Some stuff arrived

Genuine HKS SSQV 4, order at an offical HKS dealer

Clutchkit from the friendly and helpful Clutch-Specialists

And the Tial MV-S wastegate from DP-Engineering

Finally everything has arrived (except some small bits like vacuum hoses and such) so I can get on with finishing my manifold and swapping the blocks
  66. #66
Some nice parts you have got yourself, will be looking forward to some pics of it all fitted.

How much did you spend on the clutch ? (If you don't mind me asking) cheapest paddle clutch I have found is an omp one which is £300 meh !
  67. #67
Hey rowan. I see you have a sprung clutch plate. Torque will be limited on that clutch. Did you have an end power figure (torque) in mind?
    1 user thanked this post:
  68. #68
The clutch kit was about £250 and is guaranteed up to 40% increase in torque.

I am fully aware that a lug driven could take way more and would be a better option with the future in mind.
But for now this will do, as this build is a constant equation of quality/durability and budget with no numerical target in mind (BHP/Torque)

Your reaction is much appreciated though, always good to get some feedback

    Hey buddy

Yeah we see slip in real use (not just dyno lol) when running above about 250ft/lb on a sprung clutch with pressed cover - BUT the price is much nicer than the lug drive options (and nicer for your clutch pushing leg muscles!).

Parts are looking really good man - I'm excited for you!

    Ready to get cracking

    Fitted fan and string-fitted intercooler

Thanks for he positive replies! Helps me to keep motivated, as this is quite a testing build...

New track rods and link rods

Fucked bushes, so replaced them with powerflex

    Refurbished the strut

    Started welding

    Figured out the wastegate runner

The welds aren't the prettiest but they'll do the job, quite content with them since I'm just a desk monkey

Have to call it a day, since the I've used up all the gas for welding...
  84. #84
    welded up the bad boy

  85. #85
    Finally finished welding!

But I've lost (misplaced) the rubber coupler from the turbo - intercooler piping

Brakes and fluids will go on/in tonight and so I can put her back on her wheels.

After that it's just routing the vacuum lines and sorting out the wiring.

looks good!! wish i could have the funds to do this on my car
  88. #88
    Cheers,

When it comes to funds, it's all about bargain hunting and spending hours online (re)searching parts. It took me about 10 months to source everything, and even with all that it's not cheap but I think I got 30% off of the total costs.
  89. #89
It's back on it's wheels, decided to take the weekend off since my vacation ended and the misses required some attention too

Tonight I'll continue with sorting out the vacuum lines and getting a start on the wiring.

(lower boost pipe is not connected to the turbo, hence the awkward hanging down)
  90. #90
Man this has gone together fast from when I last had a look, great progress !

How have you found the build then ? I have got myself a manifold at long last so can now get some more work done
  91. #91
    Cheers mate!

The build was fun but quite challenging, since time was an issue because it's on the driveway and I only had 2 weeks off from work.

If you have a place where the car can stand for longer periods the pressure in't on as much and the build wuild be much more enjoyable.

How's your build going? Not going to weld up your own mani anymore?
  92. #92

Yes I wrapped the alternator cover and dipstick in heat reflective film.

That's good to hear rowan, and I know what you mean about having space, I have an old milking parlour for my car and all the bikes we have so it makes work slower as you can just do stuff when you feel like it.

And no I couldn't be bothered making my own so stalked one on ebay the other day got it for £200, tried it on today and it fits lovely with the t28,

Only problem is it doesn't have an external wastegate runner so I'm going to have to get one in somehow :/

Hence I decided to clean the injectors and sparkplugs. Altered some bits in the Vems and started it up.

All 4 cilinders purring and it even idled! (at +/-1200 rpm and only when warm )

And so the first test around the block came to be
Even though it's not as smooth as it could be, it already is a huge difference.
I've set the wastegate to .5 bar boost for safety reasons, since it's not really mapped.

This also means that de screamer pipe comes in really fast, and that sound is just pure porn. Which is followed by the HKS bov, and I feel like a little kid again

New tires are being fitted as we speak, then it's of get aligned and the wait for the 1st october when it is getting mapped bij Pieter at DP-Engineering.

A few pics to round it off.

After a long day tinkering, mapping and testing a result has been achieved to my satisfaction. Again, I'm not in it for the numbers, for me it's about the driveability and fun (building and driving)

    195HP en 270NM @ 0.65 bar

That was all we could get out of the tiny T2 turbo, however I''m very pleased with the result. The power is right where I use it and maybe the chocolate MA box will last a while now.

The drive home from DP-Engineering put a smile on my face from ear to ear
Even got to test how it holds up in traffic Temperature just above middle in the gauge. The clutch is some getting used to, but works very well.

Very pleased with DP-Engineering (Pieter), excellent service!

When I arrived we sat down for coffee and had a chat about my build and other related stuff. Then went to check everything and came across the stepper (iac) which didn't cooperate. After we've been upside down in the car checking the wiring from the vems behind the dash we came to the conclusion some wires have been switched around (my bad). Fixed it and Pieter started the mapping.

After a few minutes Pieter said the standard iat sensor was too "slow", which would affect enrichment and timing in a negative way. So off with the boost piping and het welded up a bung for the new "fast" sensor.

Anyway, after all this tinkering we were a few hours in before the real mapping could finally start. He was working his magic and we came to a good result.

Pieter was impressed with my driveway-build but expected a bigger turbo when he saw the engine with external wastegate, boost controller, etc.
He recommended a TD04 for more breathing room and performance (whilst still on a budget).

For now I'll just enjoy driving the thing and fixing a few minor things

    And the pics:

    Cheers Ross!

It really is fun and driveable, very happy with it

    How's your 106 coming along?
  107. #107
Yeah good thanks! Got the whole day on it today so I'll write a list of everything left to do - it's fundamentally ready for mapping now!

And from the outside (regarding the rear bumper):

i wish i could put videos like this up but mine is no where near done.

well done on the build must be a good feeling when boost kicks and and you think to yourself i made this haha

how much pick up and go does 200hp give you then ?
  113. #113
How's it coming along mate? Oil feed sorted? And what did you mean by Tial msz?

I'm still in the process of trusting my own work, sounds strange but I know what can go wrong and I'm still checking every bolt in my head.
However the feeling when boost kicks and the screamer starts is really good

It's really driveable with the current power, boost is very predictable and it spools really quick. And it surprises bmw and audi drivers, mostly followed by a thumbs up and a smile.
  114. #114
Yeah oil feed is sorted, will get som pics up soon. And the wastegate is a tial msv, must have spelt it wrong in my thread. Got it from ebay for a nice figure of £28 posted haha.

And i know what you mean i did the same as you when i did my turbo furio, i decided just to take it on the dual carrigeway and go for gold.

    Update

And a fresh MOT, passed with flying colours!

Also have new JP4 MLS headgasket waiting to be fitted (upping the compression a bit)
  119. #119
    What happened to this?
  120. #120
Not much, just been driving it.

I'm getting a company car in a month, so maybe I'll carry on with squeezing more power out of the bugger. Or maybe just sell it and get an R34

In the meanwhile, here are some pics for your entertainment

    Looks the "bizz" Rowan...

Wow that's a blast from the past, a thread revival after 4 years.

But yeah, I'm still alive. The Saxo isn't though, sold in parts.

I've buildt a tracksaxo for a mate in the meanwhile though, which is a few wiring issues away from being finished.
