VTR exhaust

i have a mk2 vtr and it has a performance back box on it, i recently replaced the cat as it had gone, i have a K&N on it but the exhaust is really quiet! if i put a staight thru on it will improve sound? or should i have not replaced the cat? its due for mot in april and thought a de-cat pipe would make it fail...any input on improving the sound muchly appreciated!

Taking the Cat out will improver the sound and the pull, but you will want to keep that Cat to get it through the MOT, i know alot of people that use a ...... Sleave...., remove cat place in sleave use for 11 months and 30 days then replace Cat for MOT, then place in sleave when you get home.... unless you know an MOT station... A little bit of flirting can sometimes help

doesnt the mk2 have the cat in the downpipe? so would mean swapping that for mot time.
got 2 months until mot anyways so get it decatted and keep your cat, just put it on for mot.

If its on the down pipe would`nt it pay to get a 4branch, although a pain in the ass changing that once a year
  5. #5
yeah will be a 4branch needed to decat mk2. what you could do is get a 4 branch and then get a mk1 centre section with underfloor cat when mot comes, be easier to change than mani every year lol

this is a real girlie reply so i do apologise in advance

downpipe? under floor cat? i did look when the cat was getting fitted it looked like underfloor to me!

i was considering getting a 4branch and decat pipe someone had suggested just changing middle to straight thru but said that id need a need back box so it would fit...i thought u could have any back box?

the garage i use is great, hes a ford specialist tho, it where i used to take fiesta zetec-s, but a low cut top and batting the eyelashes work wonders!

if its under the floor cat then yeah de-cat it and then when its mot time re-fit the cat, easy enough job to do. and in theory you can make any back box fit if you know a good welder or get a good exhaust garage to fit.
but best off getting a saxo fitment one as can effect performance. i have a universal one which i will soon be getting rid of but its been welded to fit. the bore on that backbox is different size than standard saxo middle pipe so has to me made to fit lol.

what back box would u suggest to get? or is it just personal taste? i dont want it to look huge, but want a good sound if that makes sense

think most on here go supersprint. but it is personal taste. get on ebay search saxo back box and look around. most have a decent tone anyway, but if its too quiet get the car de-catted, will make it louder, if still to quiet get the centre silencer removed if it has one, if not then 4-2-1 manifold. but as i said most have a good tone to them anyways

Cat on a VTR mk2 is located directly after the four-1 branch on the exhaust, remove the heat shield (pic 1) and you'll see one of these (pic 2)

    (pic 1) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-sa...item3f131ba80d

    (pic 2) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-Sa...item4ab31676a9

Before removing the heat shield you'll see a wire directly in the middle of the heat shield, this is lambda bank 1, this reads emissions before the cat giving the engine management system (EMS/ECU) its short trim data for emissions, if you look to the right hand side between the battery and manifold you'll see another wire connected to another lambda sensor within the exhaust downpipe this is bank 2 - designed to read emissions output after the cat, this gives a long trim for the ECU emissions

Between these two points/sensors lies the cat, as soon as you put on a new 4-2-1 you eliminate the cat on mk2 VTRs. thus reducing backpressure giving more pull as Swify quoted

The reason the cat is situated so close to the exhaust valves is to improve cat lightoff!

Cat lightoff: - the boring science part

All cats operate above 350-400deg.C, obviously when you start the car on a day like today it takes some minutes for the exhaust gases to heat the cat to 400deg.C thus the closer the cat to the exhaust valves the shorter its light off time! aka operating temperature time.

Hope this explain abit more in detail for you

Thats great thank you! i need one of you lot to live near me lol having to do it yaself is a pain in the arse, most garages round here wont touch saxo's for some reason ? ill track someone down locally...i know what i want but i will not break a nail doing it myself :-P
