Alternator...?

I was driving home the other night when the battery light came on and I lost power steering and the heater, I was told I could possibly need a new alternator, when I took a look at it today it looks quite wet with oil and smoked a bit when i started it although the belt wasn't moving? Do you think I just need a new one? And is it hard to change also changing the belt... Cheers

Get a voltmeter on the battery, should be about 12-12.5 volts with the engine off, start up the car and check the voltmeter on the battery again. If the alternator is doing its job correctly it should read around 14volts

Right just taken the alternator off and the belt, the part that spins on the engine is that the crank pulley? Well that spins it has a ring around it but it is quite loose around it, is that normal? Cheers

Is it a VTS? If so, the rubber damper between the outer edge and inner face of the crank pulley has probably worn and died. Youll need another. Think I have one here if youre interested.

Yeah though it had could this be the reason for the battery light etc. and not the alternator? How much you want? And how quick can you send it? Cheers
