Important! : Gear Linkages possibly knocking on Exhaust

  1. #1
    Hi,

Recently had a new rear axle fitted due to someone forcing me off of the road and ruining my other one, the front did not receive any damage what so ever, managed to control the front but the rear swung out - as Saxos do under sudden breaking... Its at standard height and front lowered 50mm ( Obviouusly the last rear torsion bar was lowered 50mm, I am getting the new one lowered this weekend)...

When I go over a bump slowly or off a small kerb slowly it sounds like something is hitting the exhaust (tinny sort of sound), I am thinking gear linkages as they are quite near to the exhaust, and as there is alot of weight on the front at the moment as the rear isnt lowered do you think this is possible?

    Any other suggestions would help?

    Many thanks

Best bet is to jack it up and have a look under.

You want to put it on a 4 poster ramp so you can see how everything lies when its sat as it is on the road

Could have just caught the back end of the exhaust system and pushed the mid section up a bit. Just jack the car up and tug on the centre section a few times.

Doubt the linkages would bash the exhaust unless it has been pushed right up at the join between the downpipe and the centre.

You checked the lower engine mount as this is close to both the linkages and the exhaust?

If you had a linkage issue, you would know about it. Would either not go into gear or would be difficult to get into gear.

be honest, how 'new' was the rear axle?
reason i ask, the same sound occurred on my saxo
turned out to be the ARB end plate on the rear axle - indicating that my trailing arms were worn :/

Ok thanks for the replies... I jacked it up when i got home gave everything a good shake - seems ok. I am thinking that possibly the centre section could have been knocked, i would say it is about and half inch from the gearbox mount - is this normal?

I have noticed when inside the car on start up in the mornings it does vibrate and rattle alot more so possibly the gearbox mount is on its way as well, but this is not the main issue. ( The gearbox mount is the only one not to be replaced yet).

The rear beam appears to be ok so far as the sound is coming from the front, and theres no unexpected noises coming from the new torsion.

    Cheers

Could be the gearbox mount on the exhaust that has snapped and rattling on it's self.

    i just removed mine.

It will be the bolts that hold the centre section (exhaust) to the manifold. The lower engine mount is probably rubbing against these bolts causing a squeeking sound, mine done exactly this so I downsized the lengths of the bolts and it was all sorted

    Hope this helps

I have checked these and it seems to be pretty tight, Im just thinking aloud now but would any of the components in the gear box make any sort of tinny noise?
And noticed your in Bournemouth, has yours got deep dishs? As seen one going around Poole and Btown which does look pretty tasty lol! - only seen it at night though so could possibly be the same colour blue as mine lol
