more room under the bonnet mk1 or mk2

  1. #1
kind of engine related. just wondered if anyone knew the dimensions of space under the bonnet of mk1 and mk2's. thinking of getting another saxo and leaving the jap scene but need to know what has the larger volume as i dont want to keep the engine in it.

    any help would be appreciated
    many thanks

Mk1 will be exactly the same size engine bay as a mk2 i would have thought?

you'd have thought so, but the S1 106 has a smaller bay than the S2, so it could be different

mk2 has slightly more volume. It's not much but the bonnet is a little higher. Hence certain strut braces will only fit the mk2, on the mk1 they hit the bonnet.

Ah thats a good shout actually, totally forgot about the bonnet height difference.

The S1 106 shell is earlier than all saxos remember, saxos only came out at the same time as the s2 106.

The S1 106 shell is pretty much the same as the AX iirc

Also, it sounds stupid but my boyf and I (He has mk1, I have mk2) measured from arch to end of bonnet and mk2's are very slightly longer.. Lol, only by a stupid amount but I thought you may still want to know?

tiny bit more room in the front i think, slam panel is more curved on a mk2, radiator is in the same place on both though

this is brilliant thanks for all the info, still cant decide whether to come back to cheap and cheerful frenchies or to stick with ridiculously expensive jap, hence my thinking of a jap engine'd frenchie. im glad the mk2 is bigger cos thats what i prefer

If you want a French hatch with a very large accommodating engine bay how about a 205 GTi? The engine bay is pretty huge for the size of the car and a pre cat shell may be very handy depending on what you plan to do with the project

Thought I'd throw that suggestion into the mix :-)

thats not a bad idea actually i forgot all about the 205, thanks very much i'll be looking into it. i would have thought that saxo body panels will be easier to come by than 205 parts but will check it out

what engine you thinking of ?

a b16a2 engine to begin with, will see how it goes. i miss my engine out of my old civic. want a track spec saxo (little go kart) with the jap b series honda engines that i love, and cant decide if to stay with my integra or get another saxo so thought i would mix the 2

Cos your a woman and haven't got a clue what to do.

Really, why would they change a Mk1 + Mk2 chassis design? They would have jigs set up in the factory for a Mk1, they aren't going to spend £££ to make new jigs for a Mk2 when all honestly its just a different style of bonnet / fitments and different shaped body panels.

Though i think on my 1.1 Mk1 i had much more room then on my friends Mk2 Furio. I think it was something to do with the slam panel on the Mk2's seem closer to the engine

As per above the chassis itself is exactly the same for mk1 and mk2, no difference atall.

With the mk1 slam panel it is less intrusive into the engine bay at the top, but the mk1 bonnet loses a little on the height side. Mk1 bonnet can be easily modified to allow the extra height though whereas it's more difficult to do anything about the mk2 slam panel shape
