VTR Engine swap/ cams

  1. #1
Am putting a VTR engine in my saxo, and am just in the process of stripping block, obviously doing timing belt, but would you recommend I do the head as well?

Plus where best place to get a camshaft for it, it's a silver top btw

    Cheers

    For the cam try Kamracing.

As for while you're rebuilding your head, put new seals ect while you're there.

    yeah i will be doing..

just wanted to know what cams will give me best performance
i will be re-mapping it..not that botherd about idleing
and not using throttle bodies or turbo or anything like that

    what cams do people recommend?

    Any help??

Does it have to stay silvertop? I'd say a blacktop/rallye/xsi head would be a better base to start from and you better valve springs in those, plus you'll have to pull the head off to do the do the cam anyway

Ain't thought about that, it's really about what camshaft is best at the moment and how they run and what power I get out of them?

i was looking at camming my silvertop at one point.

I found that a ph3 cam were peoples choice

although, due to being a silvertop engine, you need to uprate the valve springs as to not get 'valve float' and you will need an uprated pulley so to time the cam to its full potential.
The black top engine has a better valve spring and rocker setup so would be a more beneficial base to start from. Not sure if they are a straight swap with a silvertop though.

Also you wont see the full gains unless you map it.

All in all, id much rather save the money of all this which would see you about the same power as a breathed 16v lump, and just do an S conversion.
Better still, it would probably be better value for money putting a basic turbo set up on your silver top with standard head/block internals. Far more potential in terms of power

as far as im aware black top heads fit on silvertop bottom ends, however if you have the 98bhp silvertop then the oem inlet manifold wont fit, would have to use the blacktop/90bhp silvertop manifold, but if your fitting a blacktop head then the s1 rallye inlet is the way to go! couple that witha ph2 cam, vernier pulley and a remap would have a decent and more original engine than a 16v, im a bit of a hypocrite though i fitted a rallye head/inlet on to my vtr block i couldnt get it working so i gave up and went 16v is much cheaper tbf

now ive fitted 708's and jenveys with a predator ecu, so glad i did that to a 16v not an 8v, all depends how much power you want, if you only want around 120-130bhp and want a bit of fun go down the 8v route will be more expensive though

Yeah basically I just want Abit more power, cos had 1.1 now on a 1.4.
Got a VTR engine cheap enough as it was so thought at the time why not, do sticking with it.

Not that bothered about 16v, cos If got 120/130bhp from camming a VTR and mapping it I would be happy. As carnt tell difference between them if you pop bonnet.

Like stated, just wanted to know what cams where best to use.

    Newmans
    Cat
    Piper

    Cheers

Any of those are quality makes, newmans or the cat cams seem most popular on here

but it will cost like double the price if you cam it rather than just drop in a new engine

if you still want cams, then id personally go for newman ph3's
quite a lairy cam so would be better mapped, but can still be run unmapped

Cheers, will I need new rollers? With the ph3s?
