SERIOUS overfueling

  1. #1
So i'm getting 170 miles to £50 of fuel.. Normal motorway driving in my VTR @75Mph.

I'm popping like mad and my exhaust goes BANG. Numerous people have told me my exhaust is on fire (Just after it goes bang, so its obviously a flame) and the car struggles to idle and when it does, it stinks of petrol.

The EML light is on which is a Lambda Sensor (Checked out by Beaniemoo) but only recently its started over fuelling. I can't see why the EML has been on for a few weeks now yet only in the last few weeks its srsly overfueling.

I have a hunch maybe it could be a injector sensor problem so its injecting more fuel.

    Thanks

When beniemoo checked the lambda as it replaced or just the fault thrown up on the ecu?

Mine failed the mot last week because the emissions were sky high and throwing a flame out the back Was also using massive amounts of fuel. So we changed the lambda and run some fuel system cleaner on a long run and flew through the emissions test and the petrol consumption seems to be back to normal too.

The lambda is what tells the ecu how much fuel to put in. If it reads the afr as rich it will tell the ecu to put less fuel in and vice versa

If the lambda was on its way out then it's only gonna get worse and that's why the problem is getting worse

Prob be an idea to replace the lambda sensor

You already know what the problem is from the EML.

Therefore fix that which is broken instead of deciding its something else?

beaniemoo checked and reset the code.. it was the lambda... At the time it wasn't popping or banging.

So if i replaced the lambda, would i need the ECU code to be reset otherwise it'll still pop and bang?

    Thats not logical to him..

unplug battery then replace lambda then plug it in reconnect the battery and start the car up. Eml should stay off because its reading the working lambda.

Change the lambda, and it will send proper readings to the ecu, so problem will go away.

Or suck it up and drive round spitting flames everywhere like a boss

Change what you know is broken first and then go from there if it doesn't resolve it.

Think i'd stop driving this car for the time being as could be doing damage. Just think, any money repairing it will at least be stopping you spending loads on fuel.

Lambdas are easy to swap though, just buy a new one and fit it

I have a manifold so I'll need to 'Sleeve' the unused lambda.

Can someone confirm that on a Mk2 manifold that the TOP lambda from the OEM manifold goes in the Super Sprint manifold and bottom one (after the CAT) gets sleeved?

I have a Super Sprint centre pipe too and that has a hole for a lambda. Would it be worth lengthening the wiring then sleeving it and fitting it in here rather then the manifold?

    Yeah you got that correct.

I could be wrong but I didn't think you could make the wires longer to a lambda? but yes if you have 2 holes for 2 lambda sensors its best to use both.

Mine was done like this and was fine.

No because the second lambda won't be ready clean air, so the EML will still be on...

Neatly cut the Lambda wire in half and solider a new longer piece of wire in its place. Then shrink wrap the whole Lambda loom so its neat then clip it/ cable tie it along under your car.

IIRc lambda sensor wires are made from stainless and when soldered it creates resistance in the wire and gives the ecu a false reading. Could be wrong but i seem to remember that from college even though it was 4 years ago.

As long as the 2nd lambda sensor is reading clean air then it thinks the cat is fitted and doing its job so the fueling will remain stable mine's cable tied near the top of my gearbox on a loom bracket and i hve no issues tbh

I would also change the oil and filteras if you been over fueling that much you can glaze the bores and the fuel goes past the rings and in to the sump. then your oil becomes to thin and will kill the bottom end

    manic

i've always been suss about joing lambda wires because of the resistance issues but then you can get universal ones with crimp connectors that seem to work ok

    you should be doing 70mph...

i had same problem but mine wasnt just the lambda it was the coolant sensor aswell
  22. #22
but i would change the lambda then get another check to see if anything else has gone in the meantime

apparently a saxos speedometer is 10% out. he would only have doing 67.5mph...
