Road Cams

well folks, just a few quick question's, which would be the best, if there are any differences between Newman ph3, catcam 708's and Piper 285's or would they all be roughly the same? And i know a remap is needed to get the best from them but would they run without the map while i got the cash together for it or would i need to wait and get it all done at once? Is the standard ECU suffice to be mapped for them and would you have a rough idea of expected gains from a set of these cams with the usuall breathing mods?
Oh and do these cams need anything else for fitting or ok to go in on there own?

They're all roughly the same even though I think Catcam 743's are the cheapest, all run without remap but a bit rough, it's advised that you change the cambelt when changing cams but no need to change anything else, and they all work fine on standard ecu

oh yeah id do the belt alright, but theres no need for different springs or lifters no?

And would they be ok set on the standard timing marks with the standard cam pulleys?
  4. #4
Oh yeah I forgot about the springs lol, I think you should be ok on standard springs but you could change them just to be safe. And they will work fine on standard pulleys and timing marks

743's dont require any other modifications (same as 708's (older version) and ph3's etc)

it's recommended to get a remap and timing adjusted though it will run (lumpy, stall in the cold a lot, with worse fuel burn etc) without.

I dont know much about mapping the standard ecu... personally I'd get the predator one and get it mapped.

I personally don't think there is much point getting a standalone ecu for just a set of fast road cams mate, standard ecu with a remap will work just fine

ive just got 743's fitted this week, im booked in for a map next month, i changed the water pump and cam belt that is all

You can run them on standard timing marks, but it's better run them on the timing given by the manufacturer if you're not getting the car remapped.

on an otherwise standard engine run 1321743's on standard timing marks.

    Thanks for the replies lads
i will get a remap alright just a bit tricky over here in ireland, ive only managed to find one place that can map the standard ecu
will the cams loose some power lower down the rev range as ive seen a few people say it? As it is my car takes off pretty quick and pulls really good up to around 3rd gear then thats where it seems she could use some extra horses

@slim, do yo notice much difference now without the map?

wish i could tell you mate my clutch arm snapped and my clutch broke the day before the cams were getting fitted so that's getting sorted now, haven't had a go of it yet

always somthing breaks just as you get somthing else done

sure if you get a run of it before the remap give quick post here to tell what you think of it if you get a chance

I'd be really interested to hear the outcome of performance without a map...

If you could get a video of how it idles as well you would be a god.

I have been putting off getting them until I can afford a map but if it's useable maybe I'll get them in sooner rather than later.

yeah i will do, i rang the guy to ask how its idling he said its lumpy, there alright to drive on until the map tho

i have gmc ultimate road cams. When i didnt have a map i found it really annoying stalling and coughing on idle alot. With the map you can definatley feel the cams whereas without a map there wasnt a great difference to standard. Idles alot better now also.

does it ever cut out since the map?

Ive had both 708's and 743's running mapped and un-mapped

There both pretty much the same in terms of idle etc. It will cut out a fair bit when your slowing down to junctions etc when its not mapped. mine didnt like idling cold at all, infact it didnt idle cold, when it was warm it would idle but was abit rough.

Map raised my idle limit to 1050rpm thats a fair bit over standard. After the map it idles perfect but obviously higher.

Power felt increased on both cam's un mapped however without the raised rev limit you really dont get to see the power much at all.

yeah does sometimes mate, think the map isnt quite right to be honmest but it gets the power down, need it rolling roaded.

Heres a video before i had a map:
