#21You don't want to lose top speed, but want better acceleration? Considering a VTR will do what? 120mph flat out? A VTS box is still to do 122mph on with a 6200 rev limit. And a 1.1 box is geared for 125mph...
Why don't you want to sacrifice top speed though? Doing those kinds of speeds on a road is just downright stupid TBH, and it's extremely unlikely you'll get to them on a track in a relatively standard VTR.
I put a 1.1 box on my old 8v, never topped it out, and it accelerated quicker than any other 8v I came across. (Except for a mate's S2 engine'd S1 Rallye with an S1 box, that fucker went like stink).
Other option, is to strip the car, less weight = more go. -
#22Another point you dont want to over look is that a 1.1 gearbox on a vtr is under extra load i.e more torque and horsepower than the gearbox was rated for, and if your gonna be thrashing the gonads of it because you like the acceleration it probably wont last very long. I have seen this happen many times, people think the gearboxes are the same exept for ratios but they are not, the sun/planet gears and bearings are not as strong as vtr/vts gearboxes
, a Rallye box on the otherhand should be able to cope as they are from a car with similar power as the vtr

#23My 1.1 box lasted for over a year on a VTR engine, and over a year on a 16v, and that was used on track and 1/4 miles, lots. Was still fine at the end of that too, AFAIK, the only reason it didn't go longer was because I took the car off the road and broke it for spares, otherwise, i've no doubt it'd still be going now.
With mechanical sympathy, they're not as weak as people make out. -
#24Yes acceleration is nice to have, I think even the vts box is really low geared, I have a 50mile commute to work, mostly motorways and to sit at (a true) 75mph its revving at just over 4200rpm.
My old pug 406 2.0 8 valve turbo would be sitting just under 3K at a true 80mph.
I'll have to see what its like with the BE box when I get round to that.
