This is covered in oil... what is it?

After taking this apart like shown in the image, the inside is covered in oil. Is this normal? I see that in the photo above (not mine) it's completely clean, and it got me a little worried that mine has oil everywhere.

    ...also, what is it?

    Cheers guys.

Clean it out. Oil on the throttle body is normal due to the breather arrangement on the saxo however excessive amounts over a short period points to a fault

Thanks for the help! Could you elaborate more on this breather arrangement please?

    Many thanks

Come to think of it - there is a milky substance at the end of the breather pipe, but I was told this could happen with condensation in cold weather. This has been happening for a while, with no problems to the car. The water is also clean.

    Could this be linked?

I doubt its headgasket (the milky stuff) more than likely condensation in the rocker cover.

The spi breather arrangement is a bugger for getting gummed up with "mayo". Just keep it cleaned out every so often

Had another look at it - the jubilee clip wasn't on properly, coupled with a leaky pipe! Oil got into the top part of the throttle body, but it was only light. When I first saw it I thought it was covered in it... the actual butterfly valve is completely clean, it was just around the top part of it. Thanks anyway guys!
